How long does adjudication take for unemployment with Washington ESD?

My Washington ESD claim has been in adjudication status for almost 6 weeks now and I'm starting to panic. Filed in early December and everything seemed normal until they flagged something about my separation from my last job. The employer questionnaire was sent out but I have no idea if they responded or what they said. My account just shows 'adjudication in progress' with no timeline or explanation. Bills are piling up and I'm wondering if this is normal or if something went wrong? Has anyone else experienced such a long wait for adjudication to complete?

6 weeks is definitely on the longer side but not unheard of, especially if there's a separation issue involved. Mine took about 4 weeks last year when they had to investigate a quit vs termination dispute.

Did you ever find out what was taking so long? I'm worried they're waiting for something from me that I don't know about.

0 coins

They never really explained the delay, just eventually got approved. The waiting is the worst part honestly.

Adjudication times vary wildly depending on the complexity of your case and Washington ESD's current workload. Separation issues typically take longer because they need responses from both you and your employer. If it's been 6 weeks, your case is probably in the review queue waiting for an adjudicator to make a determination.

Is there any way to check if they're still waiting for employer information or if it's just in the queue?

0 coins

Not really through the online system unfortunately. You'd need to call Washington ESD to get specifics about what's holding up your case.

I've been calling Washington ESD for weeks trying to get updates on my adjudication and it's impossible to get through. Always busy signals or I get disconnected after waiting on hold forever. Recently found this service called Claimyr that actually got me connected to a real person at Washington ESD in like 20 minutes. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Might be worth checking out claimyr.com if you need to actually talk to someone about your case status.

Really? I've been trying to call for weeks with no luck. How much does something like that cost?

0 coins

They don't share pricing upfront but honestly after spending hours trying to get through on my own, it was worth it just to get answers about my claim.

0 coins

Sounds too good to be true but I'm desperate at this point. Nothing to lose I guess.

0 coins

The whole adjudication process is broken. I waited 8 weeks last year and when they finally made a decision, they had the facts completely wrong! Had to file an appeal which took another month.

0 coins

That's terrifying. How do you even know if they have the right information about your case?

0 coins

You don't until they make their decision and send you the determination letter. Then you can see what they based it on.

0 coins

For separation issues, Washington ESD has to investigate the circumstances around why you left your job. They send questionnaires to both you and your employer, review any documentation, and then an adjudicator makes a determination about your eligibility. The process typically takes 4-8 weeks but can be longer if there are complications or if they need additional information.

0 coins

I submitted my questionnaire the same day I received it. Should I be worried that it's taking so long?

0 coins

Not necessarily. The timeline depends more on Washington ESD's workload and whether your former employer responded promptly. Some employers take weeks to return their questionnaires.

0 coins

My employer never responded to theirs and it still took 7 weeks because Washington ESD had to make multiple attempts to contact them.

same boat here, been waiting 5 weeks for mine... starting to think they forgot about my case entirely

0 coins

At least I'm not alone in this. The uncertainty is killing me.

0 coins

They definitely haven't forgotten, there's just a huge backlog of cases to review.

0 coins

I used Claimyr too after seeing it mentioned here and it actually worked. Got through to Washington ESD and found out my adjudication was delayed because they classified my case wrong initially. The agent was able to expedite it and I got my determination within a week after that call.

0 coins

That gives me hope! I'm definitely going to try calling through their service.

0 coins

Did they ask for a lot of personal information to use the service?

0 coins

No more than you'd give Washington ESD directly. They just help you get connected, then you talk to the actual ESD agent yourself.

0 coins

Washington ESD is probably just swamped. Holiday season always slows things down too with people being out of office.

0 coins

I hadn't thought about the holidays affecting processing times. Makes sense though.

One thing to keep in mind is that even if your adjudication takes a long time, if you're eventually approved, you'll receive backpay for all the weeks you were waiting. Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even while it's pending.

0 coins

I've been filing weekly but not getting paid obviously. Good to know the backpay will come through if approved.

0 coins

Yes definitely keep filing! I made that mistake and missed out on several weeks of benefits because I stopped filing during adjudication.

0 coins

Try calling first thing Monday morning at 8am sharp. Sometimes you can get through before the phone lines get totally jammed.

0 coins

I've tried that multiple times with no luck. Always busy or disconnected.

0 coins

That's exactly why I ended up using Claimyr. Saved me from wasting more hours trying to get through on my own.

0 coins

Is there a way to submit additional documentation during adjudication if you think of something that might help your case?

0 coins

You can fax or mail additional documents to Washington ESD with your claim number, but there's no guarantee they'll be reviewed before the initial determination is made.

0 coins

Good to know. I have some emails from my supervisor that might help clarify the separation circumstances.

0 coins

The waiting is torture but try not to panic. Most adjudications do eventually get resolved, even if it takes longer than expected.

0 coins

Thanks for the reassurance. Some days I convince myself they're going to deny me and I'll owe money back.

0 coins

I'm at 7 weeks now for my adjudication. Different issue though - they're investigating whether I was actually able and available to work during a period when I was dealing with a family emergency. Still no word.

0 coins

7 weeks is even longer than mine! Are you going to try calling?

0 coins

Probably going to try that Claimyr thing people mentioned. Regular calling hasn't worked for me either.

0 coins

whatever you do dont give up filing your weekly claims while waiting. i know someone who stopped and lost like 12 weeks of benefits

0 coins

Definitely still filing every week even though it's frustrating to see $0 payments.

0 coins

Washington ESD adjudication is like a black hole. You throw your case in and have no idea when or if anything will come back out. The lack of communication is the worst part.

0 coins

Exactly! Even a simple status update would help so much with the anxiety.

0 coins

The system definitely lacks transparency. Most claimants are left guessing about what's happening with their case.

0 coins

Had a friend who used some service to get through to Washington ESD and they found out her case was just sitting in the wrong queue for weeks. Sometimes there are simple administrative errors causing delays.

0 coins

That's both encouraging and frustrating. Encouraging that it might be a simple fix, frustrating that it's taking so long for no good reason.

0 coins

The whole system needs an overhaul. 6-8 weeks to make a simple eligibility determination is ridiculous when people need these benefits to survive.

0 coins

Agree completely. I understand they need to investigate but this timeline is unsustainable for people who have bills to pay.

0 coins

Update us when you hear something! I'm in a similar situation and it helps to know how other cases are progressing.

0 coins

Will definitely update the thread once I get my determination. Going to try calling through that service people mentioned first though.

0 coins

Hang in there. I know the waiting is awful but most cases do get resolved eventually. The system is slow but it usually works in the end.

0 coins

Thanks for the encouragement. Really helps to have this community during such a stressful time.

0 coins

Six weeks is frustrating but I've seen cases take 10+ weeks for complex separation issues. If you can get through to Washington ESD directly, they might be able to give you a better timeline for your specific case.

0 coins

10+ weeks would be devastating financially. Really hoping mine doesn't take that long.

0 coins

That's why services like Claimyr can be worth it - getting actual information instead of just waiting in the dark.
