what does adjudication progress mean for unemployment - Washington ESD claim stuck
My Washington ESD claim has been showing 'adjudication in progress' for almost 2 weeks now and I have no idea what this actually means. I filed my initial claim on January 6th and everything seemed fine at first. Then last week when I went to file my weekly claim, I noticed this status change. There's nothing in my account that shows what issue they're reviewing or how long this might take. I've been trying to call Washington ESD but the phone lines are always busy. Is this normal? What exactly are they looking at during adjudication and should I be worried about my claim being denied?

Adjudication means Washington ESD is reviewing something about your claim that needs further investigation before they can approve benefits. Could be anything from employment verification to separation reasons from your last job. It's basically them fact-checking details.

•Thanks for explaining that. Do you know how long it usually takes? I'm getting really anxious about paying rent next week.

•Can take anywhere from 1-6 weeks depending on what they're reviewing. If they need info from your employer it takes longer.

I went through the same thing last month. Mine was in adjudication for 3 weeks because they were verifying my job search activities from a previous claim period. Eventually got approved but the waiting was terrible.

•Did they contact you during those 3 weeks or just leave you hanging?

•Nothing. Complete radio silence until I got the determination letter in my secure messages.

•Same experience here. The uncertainty is the worst part of the whole process.

I had success using Claimyr to actually get through to a Washington ESD agent when my claim was stuck in adjudication. The service calls for you and connects you when they get an agent on the line. Way better than spending hours hitting redial. Check out claimyr.com - they even have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

•Is that legit? Sounds too good to be true honestly.

•Yeah it's real. I was skeptical too but it actually worked. Got connected to an agent in about 45 minutes instead of calling for days.

•I might try that if this drags on much longer. How much does it cost?

ADJUDICATION IS WASHINGTON ESD'S WAY OF STALLING! They put claims in limbo hoping people give up and stop filing. I've been dealing with this system for years and it's all designed to deny benefits.

•That's not really accurate. Adjudication is a required legal process when there are questions about eligibility.

•Legal process my foot! It's bureaucratic nonsense designed to wear people down.

what specific reason did your employer give for your separation? that usually determines what gets reviewed during adjudication

•They said it was a layoff due to reduced business volume. Nothing controversial as far as I know.

•then its probably just routine verification with your employer. should be fine but might take a few more weeks

Keep filing your weekly claims even during adjudication! People forget to do this and lose benefits. The payments will be retroactive once your claim is approved.

•Yes I've been doing that. Good reminder though because I almost skipped last week thinking it was pointless.

•Smart to keep filing. I made that mistake once and had to appeal to get those weeks back.

My claim was in adjudication for 5 weeks last year. Turns out my previous employer disputed my claim saying I quit instead of being laid off. Had to provide documentation proving it was actually a layoff. Eventually won but what a nightmare.

•Oh no, that sounds awful. How did you prove it was a layoff and not quitting?

•I had saved emails about the layoffs and got statements from coworkers who were also laid off. Documentation is everything.

•This is exactly why I save every work email. You never know what you'll need later.

The phone situation with Washington ESD is ridiculous. I tried calling every day for 2 weeks during my adjudication and never got through once. Finally used that Claimyr service someone mentioned and got connected same day.

•That's the second person mentioning Claimyr. Might be worth trying if this keeps dragging on.

•I used them too when I couldn't reach anyone about my overpayment notice. Worked great.

Adjudication just means they need more info before making a decision. Most common reasons are employer disputes, questions about availability for work, or issues with job search requirements. Usually resolves in your favor if you were legitimately laid off.

•That's reassuring. I definitely was laid off and have been actively job searching so hopefully that helps.

•Make sure your WorkSourceWA account is updated with your job search activities. They sometimes check that during adjudication.

•How do you update employer info during adjudication? Through the regular Washington ESD website?

I'm going through adjudication right now too! Filed December 28th and still waiting. At least I'm not alone in this frustration. The uncertainty is killing me financially.

•Right? The not knowing is almost worse than being denied. At least then you could plan next steps.

•Hang in there both of you. Most adjudications end up being approved, it's just the process taking forever.

Pro tip: check your correspondence inbox on the Washington ESD website daily. Sometimes they send requests for additional information that you might miss. Responding quickly can speed up the process.

•Good advice. I've been checking but haven't seen anything yet. Will keep monitoring closely.

•Yes! I almost missed a request for wage verification because I wasn't checking messages regularly.

For what it's worth, I used Claimyr when my claim was stuck and the agent told me exactly what they were reviewing and gave me a timeline. Worth the peace of mind to actually talk to someone who can see your file.

•That does sound helpful. Better than just wondering what's happening behind the scenes.

The whole system is designed to make you give up. Stay persistent and keep filing weekly claims. Document everything in case you need to appeal later.

•Good point about documenting everything. I'll start keeping better records of all this.

I'm going through the exact same thing right now! My claim has been in adjudication for about 10 days and I'm starting to panic about bills. Reading through everyone's experiences here is actually really helpful - at least I know I'm not the only one dealing with this nightmare. The lack of communication from Washington ESD is the most frustrating part. I've been continuing to file my weekly claims like others suggested, but the uncertainty is really getting to me. Has anyone found any patterns in how long different types of adjudication issues take to resolve?

•I feel you on the panic about bills - that's exactly where I'm at too. From what I'm seeing in this thread, it seems like employer verification issues (like what Noah went through) can take 4-6 weeks, while routine stuff might be closer to 2-3 weeks. The really frustrating thing is there's no way to know which category you fall into without actually talking to someone. Keep hanging in there and definitely keep filing those weekly claims!
