How long does a redetermination for unemployment take at Washington ESD?
Filed my initial claim back in October and it got approved. Then I got a letter saying Washington ESD is doing a redetermination on my claim and I need to provide additional documentation about my separation from my previous employer. I submitted everything they asked for three weeks ago but haven't heard anything back. My weekly claims are still pending and I'm starting to stress about bills. Does anyone know how long redeterminations typically take? I tried calling but can't get through to anyone at Washington ESD.

Redeterminations can take anywhere from 2-6 weeks depending on the complexity of your case. Since it involves your separation circumstances, they're probably reviewing your employer's response too. The good news is if they approve it, you'll get all the back pay for the weeks that were pending.

•That's somewhat reassuring. I just wish they'd give some kind of timeline when they send these letters.

•The back pay part is true - I got like 8 weeks of back pay when mine finally went through last year.

I'm going through the same thing right now! Got my redetermination letter in mid-December and still waiting. It's so frustrating because they don't update you on the status at all. Have you tried checking your account online to see if there's any new information?

•Yeah I check it obsessively lol. Still just says 'pending adjudication' with no other details.

•Same here! I hate that they don't give you any indication of where you are in the process.

I had luck using Claimyr to actually get through to someone at Washington ESD when I was waiting on my redetermination. They have this system that calls for you and gets you connected to an agent. I found out my case was just sitting in a queue and the agent was able to expedite it. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Might be worth trying if you've been waiting this long.

•Never heard of that service before. Is it legit? I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point.

•Yeah it's totally legit, the website is claimyr.com. I was skeptical too but it actually worked. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

•I used them too when I couldn't get through about my job search requirements. Saved me so much time and frustration.

THREE WEEKS?? I've been waiting 7 weeks for my redetermination and nothing. This system is absolutely broken. I've called probably 200+ times and either get hung up on or put on hold for 3+ hours before getting disconnected.

•7 weeks is insane! Have you tried contacting your state representative? I've heard that sometimes helps.

•Not yet but I'm getting to that point. I can't afford to keep waiting much longer.

Just to clarify - a redetermination is different from an initial adjudication. They're re-examining a decision that was already made, usually because new information came to light or someone appealed. The process can be slower because they have to review everything again from scratch.

•Thanks for explaining that. I always get confused between adjudication and redetermination.

Carmen Vega
•No problem! Adjudication is the initial decision process, redetermination is when they revisit and potentially change that decision.

My redetermination took exactly 4 weeks back in November. They ended up approving my claim and I got about $2800 in back pay. The waiting is horrible but try to stay patient.

•That gives me hope! What was your redetermination about if you don't mind me asking?

Andre Rousseau
•They questioned whether I was laid off or quit. My employer initially said I quit but then corrected it to say I was laid off due to lack of work.

honestly the whole system is a joke. took them 2 months to process mine and then they denied it anyway. had to appeal and that took another month. meanwhile im behind on rent and utilities

•Did you win your appeal? I'm worried that's where I'm headed too.

•yeah i won but it was a nightmare. had to get documentation from my employer that took forever

Update: I finally got through to someone using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. The agent told me my redetermination was approved last week but they hadn't sent the notification yet! She said I should see the back pay in my account within 2-3 business days. So glad I didn't keep waiting around.

•Wow that's great news! I'm definitely going to try Claimyr now. How much did it cost?

•Worth every penny just for the peace of mind. Finally knowing what's happening with my claim was such a relief.

I work in HR and deal with Washington ESD stuff regularly. Redeterminations involving separation issues usually take 3-5 weeks because they have to give your employer 10 days to respond to their inquiry. If your employer doesn't respond timely, it can add another week or two to the process.
0 coins
Yuki Kobayashi
•That's really helpful context. I didn't realize my employer was part of the process too.

Giovanni Colombo
•Yeah, they send a form to your employer asking about the circumstances of your separation. The employer's response is a big factor in their decision.

Keep filing your weekly claims even while waiting for the redetermination! I made the mistake of stopping and it caused issues later. As long as you keep certifying, you'll get paid for those weeks if the redetermination is in your favor.

Yuki Kobayashi
•Yes I'm still filing every week. Good advice though - I almost stopped a couple times thinking it was pointless.

•Definitely keep filing. I learned that the hard way when I had to go back and reopen my claim.

Same boat here... filed my redetermination paperwork 5 weeks ago and radio silence since then. Starting to wonder if they even received it. Should I resubmit or just keep waiting?
0 coins
Carmen Vega
•Don't resubmit - that could actually slow things down. If you mailed it, there should be a record of delivery. If you submitted online, check your account for confirmation.

•I submitted online and got a confirmation number. Just nerve-wracking not hearing anything for so long.

For what it's worth, my redetermination was approved in just 2 weeks last month. I think it depends on your specific situation and how backlogged they are. Mine was pretty straightforward - just needed to clarify my last day of work.

Yuki Kobayashi
•2 weeks sounds amazing! Mine might be more complicated since it involves the reason I left my job.

•Yeah, those separation issue cases definitely take longer. Hang in there!

I've been tracking my case obsessively and noticed that Washington ESD seems to process redeterminations in batches. I've seen people who submitted the same week as me get approved while I'm still waiting. It's like they don't go in order.
0 coins
Yuki Kobayashi
•That would explain why the timing seems so random. Probably depends on which adjudicator gets your case.
0 coins
Sofia Torres
•Exactly! Some adjudicators are faster than others, and some cases are more complex.

Try not to stress too much about the timeline. I know it's easier said than done when you're waiting for money you need. My redetermination took 6 weeks but I got approved for all the back pay. The waiting is the worst part.

Yuki Kobayashi
•Thanks for the encouragement. It's hard not to worry when bills are piling up.

•I totally understand. I was in the same position. Just remember that if you're eligible, you'll get all that back pay eventually.

Quick question - when they do the redetermination, do they look at your entire claim or just the specific issue they're investigating? I'm worried they might find other problems with my claim.
0 coins
Carmen Vega
•They typically focus on the specific issue that triggered the redetermination. However, if they discover other problems during their review, they could investigate those too.

Ava Martinez
•That's what I was afraid of. Guess I'll just have to wait and see.

I actually just got my redetermination decision yesterday after 5 weeks of waiting. They approved my claim and I already see the back pay in my account. There's hope! The letter said they determined my separation was due to lack of work, not misconduct like my employer initially claimed.

Yuki Kobayashi
•That's fantastic news! Gives me hope that mine will work out too. How much back pay did you get?

Miguel Ramos
•About $2200 for the 5 weeks I was waiting. Such a relief to finally have it resolved.

For anyone still waiting - I found out you can sometimes get updates by calling the automated system and checking your claim status. It's not always current but sometimes shows changes before you get the letter.
0 coins
Yuki Kobayashi
•What number do you call for that? I didn't know there was an automated system.
0 coins
Zainab Omar
•It's the same main Washington ESD number but you can check your claim status through the automated menu before it tries to connect you to an agent.

Just want to add that even if your redetermination gets denied, you can appeal that decision too. Don't give up if the first decision doesn't go your way. I had to appeal my redetermination denial and won at the hearing level.
0 coins
Yuki Kobayashi
•Good to know! Hopefully it doesn't come to that but it's reassuring to know there are still options.

Connor Gallagher
•Definitely. The appeal process is slower but sometimes they get it wrong the first time and the hearing officer sees it differently.

Update from earlier - I tried Claimyr this morning and got through to Washington ESD in about 10 minutes. Agent told me my redetermination was approved last Thursday! She said the back pay should show up in my account by tomorrow. So relieved to finally know what's happening. Thanks to whoever recommended that service!
