How do you get your unemployment money from Washington ESD after approval?
My Washington ESD claim was finally approved last week after being stuck in adjudication for a month. I can see the payment amounts in my eServices account but I have no idea how the money actually gets to me. Do I need to set up direct deposit? Will they mail a check? I'm really confused about the whole process and need this money ASAP to pay rent. Can someone explain how you actually receive your unemployment payments once your claim is approved?

You need to set up direct deposit through your eServices account under payment preferences. It's way faster than waiting for debit cards or checks to arrive in the mail.

•Thanks! Is direct deposit automatic once I set it up or do I need to do something each week?

•It's automatic after setup. Just keep filing your weekly claims and the money goes straight to your bank account.

i think they send you a debit card automatically when your first payment is issued. thats what happened to me

•How long did it take for the debit card to arrive? I really can't wait weeks for this.

•took like 7-10 days i think? but direct deposit is definitely faster if you can set that up

The Washington ESD payment system has three options: direct deposit (fastest), debit card (KeyBank), or paper check (slowest). If you need money quickly, definitely go with direct deposit. You can set this up in your eServices account under 'Payment Method.

•This is exactly right. I've been helping people with unemployment issues and direct deposit typically processes within 1-2 business days of payment authorization.

•Perfect, I'll log in and set up direct deposit right now. Thanks for the clear explanation!

Honestly, calling Washington ESD to verify payment methods was such a nightmare until I found Claimyr. They actually got me through to an agent in under 20 minutes to confirm my direct deposit setup. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows exactly how it works.

•Never heard of that service before. Did they actually help you get through or is this some kind of scam?

•No it's legit! I was skeptical too but I was desperate after spending hours on hold. They handle the calling for you and connect you when an agent picks up.

•Might have to try that if I run into issues. The phone system is so frustrating.

MAKE SURE you keep filing your weekly claims even after your first payment! I know someone who stopped filing thinking they were done and lost weeks of benefits.

•Oh wow, good to know! I definitely would have made that mistake.

•Yes, this is crucial. You must continue filing weekly claims for each week you want to receive benefits, even if you've already been approved.

the keybank debit card fees are ridiculous though. if you use it at non-keybank ATMs they charge you like $2.50 per transaction

•That's why direct deposit is the best option. No fees and you can use your regular bank account.

•yeah exactly. learned that the hard way when i was using the card for everything

For those setting up direct deposit, you'll need your bank routing number and account number. Make sure the account is in your name and matches the name on your Washington ESD claim. Mismatched names can cause payment delays.

Sofía Rodríguez
•Good point about the name matching. My bank account is under a slightly different version of my name, should I be worried?

•If it's just a middle initial difference or something minor, you should be fine. But if there's a significant discrepancy, you might want to contact Washington ESD to clarify.

How long after you file your weekly claim does the payment actually show up? I filed Sunday but haven't seen anything yet.

Jamal Brown
•Washington ESD typically processes payments on Tuesday/Wednesday after you file your weekly claim on Sunday. With direct deposit, you should see it by Wednesday or Thursday.

•Ok that makes me feel better. I was starting to panic that something went wrong.

Don't forget about taxes! Washington ESD can withhold federal taxes from your payments if you choose, but you'll still owe taxes on unemployment benefits when you file your return.

Sofía Rodríguez
•Ugh, I didn't even think about taxes. Can I change my withholding preference after I already set up my account?

Liam Murphy
•Yes, you can change your tax withholding in eServices under account preferences. It's better to have them withhold something rather than owe a big chunk later.

I had so much trouble getting through to Washington ESD when my direct deposit wasn't working. Spent literally 6 hours over three days trying to reach someone. Finally used that Claimyr service someone mentioned and got connected to an agent who fixed my banking info in like 5 minutes.

•How much does that service cost? Seems like it might be worth it to avoid the phone hell.

Amara Okafor
•Honestly didn't care about the cost at that point - I needed my benefits and couldn't get through any other way. Way less stressful than dealing with busy signals and hang-ups.

Pro tip: if you're switching from debit card to direct deposit, it can take 1-2 payment cycles to fully switch over. Don't panic if your first payment after the change still goes to the card.

•That's really helpful to know. I probably would have freaked out if my payment went to a card I didn't know existed.

Quick question - if I miss filing my weekly claim one week, do I lose that week's benefits forever or can I make it up later?
0 coins
Jamal Brown
•You have a limited window to file late weekly claims, but it's not guaranteed. Best to file every week on time to avoid complications.

Aisha Patel
•Got it, definitely won't risk missing any weeks then. Thanks!

The mobile app makes filing weekly claims super easy btw. Way better than trying to use the website on your phone.

•There's a mobile app? I had no idea! What's it called?

•It's just called 'Washington ESD' in the app store. You can file claims, check payment status, all that stuff.

OP, you mentioned being stuck in adjudication for a month - what ended up resolving that? I'm dealing with the same thing right now and getting desperate.

Sofía Rodríguez
•Honestly I never got a clear answer on what resolved it. One day it just switched from 'adjudication in progress' to 'claim allowed.' Super frustrating not knowing what was happening.

•Ugh that's what I was afraid of. Guess I just have to keep waiting and hope for the best.

•This is exactly why I ended up using Claimyr - I couldn't stand not knowing what was happening with my claim. At least talking to an actual person gave me peace of mind about the process.

For anyone else reading this - the Washington ESD website has a payment calendar that shows when payments are processed each week. Really helpful for planning when you'll actually see your money.

Sofía Rodríguez
•That sounds super useful! Do you have a link to that calendar?

Gabrielle Dubois
•It's buried in the resources section of the Washington ESD website. You have to dig around a bit but it's there under payment information.

Just want to add that once you get your first payment, things usually go pretty smoothly from there. The hardest part is getting through the initial approval and setup process.

Sofía Rodríguez
•That's reassuring to hear! This whole process has been so stressful.

•Agreed. The Washington ESD system isn't perfect but once you're in the routine of weekly filing and know your payment schedule, it becomes much more manageable.

UPDATE: I got my direct deposit set up and received my first payment yesterday! Thanks everyone for the help. For anyone else in the same situation - definitely go with direct deposit over the debit card.
