How do you file an unemployment claim in Washington - completely lost on the process

I just got laid off from my job at a manufacturing plant after 6 years and I have no idea how to file an unemployment claim. I've never been unemployed before and the Washington ESD website is really confusing. Do I need to gather specific documents first? How long does it take to get approved? I'm really stressed about paying my mortgage and need to get this process started ASAP. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry to hear about your layoff. The process isn't too bad once you know the steps. First, go to secure.esd.wa.gov and create your SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account if you don't have one. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the last 18 months including employer names, addresses, dates of employment, and reason for separation.

Thank you! Do I need pay stubs or just the employment dates and employer info?

0 coins

You don't need pay stubs to file initially, but having them handy helps verify information if Washington ESD has questions later.

0 coins

The application itself takes about 30-45 minutes if you have all your info ready. Make sure you file in the first week after you lose your job - there's a waiting week before benefits start, so don't delay. You'll also need to register with WorkSource Washington for job search requirements.

0 coins

What's the waiting week exactly? Does that mean I won't get paid for the first week?

0 coins

Correct - there's one unpaid waiting week. So if you file this week, you'd get your first payment for the second week of unemployment.

Just went through this process myself last month. After you submit your initial claim, Washington ESD will either approve it right away or send it to adjudication if they need to verify information with your employer. Mine took 3 weeks because they had to confirm my separation reason.

0 coins

Three weeks?! How did you manage financially during that time?

0 coins

It was tough. I had to borrow from family. But once it got approved, I received all the back pay for those weeks.

If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD during adjudication, I found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an actual agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

Don't forget you have to file weekly claims every week to get paid, even while your initial claim is being processed. Log into your account every Sunday and complete the weekly claim by reporting any work you did and money you earned that week.

0 coins

Even if I didn't work at all that week? Seems redundant.

0 coins

Yes, you still have to file and report zero earnings. If you miss filing a weekly claim, you won't get paid for that week.

0 coins

ugh the washington esd system is so confusing. took me forever to figure out the SAW login thing. why cant they just make it simple like other states

0 coins

I agree the interface could be more user-friendly, but once you get familiar with it, it works pretty well.

0 coins

maybe for you but i kept getting error messages and had to start over like 3 times

0 coins

Update: I started the application and got stuck on the employer information section. My last employer was acquired by another company right before I got laid off. Do I put the original company name or the new one?

0 coins

Use the company name that was on your most recent paystub - that's usually the one paying into the UI system.

0 coins

You can also call Washington ESD for clarification on situations like this, though the hold times are pretty long.

0 coins

I tried calling Washington ESD yesterday and was on hold for 2 hours before getting disconnected. This is ridiculous - how are people supposed to get help when they need it?

0 coins

That's exactly why I used Claimyr when I had issues with my claim. It's so much easier than sitting on hold for hours just to get hung up on.

0 coins

What's Claimyr? Is it legit?

0 coins

Yeah it's legitimate - they help you get through to Washington ESD agents. I was skeptical at first but it actually worked and saved me tons of time.

0 coins

Pro tip: file your claim early in the week if possible. I filed on a Friday and it seemed to take longer to process than my friend who filed on Monday.

0 coins

Good to know! I was planning to finish it this weekend but maybe I'll wait until Monday.

0 coins

I don't think the day matters for processing, but filing earlier in the week gives you more time to resolve any issues before the next weekly claim deadline.

0 coins

Make sure you understand the job search requirements too. You need to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log of your activities. WorkSource has good resources for this.

0 coins

Do I need to start the job search activities right away or can I wait until my claim is approved?

0 coins

Start right away. They can ask for your job search log going back to when you first filed your claim.

0 coins

been unemployed 3 times in my career and the process gets easier each time. just take it step by step and dont panic if it takes a few weeks to get approved

0 coins

That's reassuring to hear from someone with experience. How long did your claims usually take to process?

0 coins

ranged from 1 week to 4 weeks depending on if they needed to verify stuff with employers. the back pay always came through though

0 coins

One thing to watch out for - if you have any side income like freelance work or gig economy jobs, you need to report that on your weekly claims. Even small amounts can affect your benefits.

0 coins

I do some occasional handyman work for neighbors. Do I need to report that even if it's just cash?

0 coins

Yes, you need to report all income regardless of how you're paid. Washington ESD takes this seriously and can audit your claim.

0 coins

The Washington ESD website has a pretty good checklist of what you need before starting the application. I printed it out and gathered everything first - made the process much smoother.

0 coins

I'll look for that checklist. Having everything organized beforehand sounds like a good plan.

0 coins

Remember that your benefit amount is based on your highest earning quarter in the past year, not your most recent pay. So if you had a really good quarter earlier, your benefits might be higher than expected.

0 coins

That's interesting - I had a lot of overtime in Q2 last year. Does that mean my benefits would be calculated from that quarter?

0 coins

Exactly. They use your highest quarter to calculate your weekly benefit amount, up to the maximum allowed.

0 coins

Just want to add that if your claim gets denied for any reason, don't give up. You can appeal the decision and many appeals are successful if you have good documentation.

0 coins

Good to know there are options if something goes wrong. Hopefully it won't come to that though.

0 coins

Most claims get approved without issues, especially for layoffs. Appeals are mainly for cases where the separation reason is disputed.

0 coins

The system can be glitchy sometimes. If you get error messages while filing, try a different browser or clear your cache. I had to switch from Chrome to Firefox to get mine to work.

0 coins

Thanks for the tech tip! I'll keep that in mind if I run into problems.

0 coins

Don't forget to update your contact information if you move during your claim period. Missing important notices from Washington ESD can cause delays or even disqualification.

0 coins

I'm not planning to move but good reminder about keeping everything current.

0 coins

If you're worried about the application taking too long, you can always check the status online after you submit. The system updates pretty regularly with where your claim stands in the process.

0 coins

That's helpful to know I can track the progress. At least I won't be completely in the dark about what's happening.

0 coins

I had issues with my claim last year and spent weeks trying to get through to Washington ESD by phone. Finally tried Claimyr and got connected to an agent the same day. Definitely worth considering if you run into problems.

0 coins

Several people have mentioned Claimyr now. I'll keep that in mind as a backup plan if I can't reach anyone directly.

0 coins

Yeah it's becoming pretty popular among people who've dealt with Washington ESD phone issues. The peace of mind was worth it for me.

0 coins

Good luck with your claim! The initial anxiety is normal but most people get through the process fine. Just stay on top of your weekly claims and job search requirements.

0 coins

Thank you everyone for all the helpful advice! I feel much more confident about starting the process now.

0 coins

You're welcome! Don't hesitate to come back here if you run into any issues during the process.
