hey everyone, i lost my job last week and have no idea how to apply for unemployment. my coworker said something about filing online but i dont know where to start. do i need to wait a certain amount of time before applying? also heard you have to look for jobs while getting benefits but not sure what that means exactly. any help would be appreciated, kinda stressed about paying rent next month

You need to file your initial claim on the Washington ESD website at esd.wa.gov as soon as possible. Don't wait - there's a waiting week but you should apply right away. You'll need your Social Security number, employment history for the past 18 months, and details about why you lost your job. The process takes about 30-45 minutes online.

•Having your last pay stub helps but isn't required. Washington ESD will verify your wages with employers directly. Just be as accurate as possible with dates and earnings.

Make sure you understand the job search requirements too. You'll need to register with WorkSource Washington and document your job search activities. It's 3 job search activities per week once benefits start. Keep detailed records because they can audit your search log.

•what counts as job search activities? just applying for jobs or other stuff too?

•Applying for jobs, attending job fairs, networking events, informational interviews, career counseling sessions. There's a list on the WorkSource site with all acceptable activities.

•I always just applied to 3 jobs a week and never had problems. Keep it simple.

One thing that helped me was using Claimyr when I had questions about my claim status. I couldn't get through to Washington ESD by phone for weeks - kept getting busy signals or hung up on. Claimyr got me connected to an actual agent who walked me through everything. Check out claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of that service. Is it legit or just another scam?

Chad Winthrope
•It's totally legit - they just help you get through the phone system to reach Washington ESD agents. Saved me hours of calling and redialing.

•might check that out if i run into problems, calling government offices is always a nightmare

DONT WAIT TO APPLY! I made that mistake and it cost me a week of benefits. Even if you think you might not qualify, file anyway. Washington ESD will determine your eligibility. The worst they can say is no, but if you don't apply you definitely won't get anything.

•good point, i was worried about applying too early but sounds like thats not a thing

•Yeah I filed the day after I got laid off. Better safe than sorry with this stuff.

The whole system is a joke honestly. I've been trying to get my claim processed for 3 weeks and it's stuck in 'adjudication' whatever that means. Customer service is impossible to reach and when you do get through they can't tell you anything useful. Good luck OP, you're gonna need it.

•Adjudication just means they're reviewing something about your claim. Usually employment verification or eligibility questions. It sucks but most get resolved eventually.

•Eventually isn't paying my bills though. This whole process is designed to make you give up.

•That's exactly when Claimyr helped me - when my claim was in adjudication limbo. Got connected to someone who could actually see what was holding it up.

Basic steps: 1) File online at esd.wa.gov 2) Wait for determination letter 3) If approved, file weekly claims every Sunday 4) Do your job search activities 5) Report any work/income. It's pretty straightforward once you get started.

•how long does it usually take to get approved?

•If there are no issues, usually 2-3 weeks. But if they need to verify anything with your employer or if there are eligibility questions, it can take longer.

I lost my job in March and the whole process took about 3 weeks from filing to getting my first payment. Make sure you set up direct deposit when you file - checks take forever to arrive by mail. Also keep copies of everything you submit.

•did you have any problems with the job search stuff? seems like a lot of paperwork

•Not really, just keep a simple log of where you applied and when. I used a spreadsheet but you can use the WorkSource tools too.

•The WorkSource job search log is actually pretty user friendly once you figure it out.

One thing nobody mentions is that you might be eligible for more than just regular unemployment. There's also things like training programs and other assistance. Worth exploring all your options on the Washington ESD site.

Hunter Brighton
•like what kind of training programs?

Makayla Shoemaker
•WorkFirst, apprenticeship programs, vocational rehabilitation. Depends on your situation but they have info on the ESD website under 'training opportunities'.

Pro tip: screenshot everything when you're filing online. The system can be glitchy and sometimes kicks you out. Having screenshots saved me from having to start over twice.

•good thinking, government websites are always breaking

•This is so true. I learned this the hard way after getting kicked out right at the end of filing.

Make sure you understand what disqualifies you too. Working part time while on benefits is allowed but you have to report it correctly. Lying about work or income will get you in trouble and you'll have to pay back benefits.

•what if i get offered a part time job while getting benefits?

Lucas Lindsey
•You can work part time and still get partial benefits. Just report all your earnings when you file your weekly claim. They'll calculate how much to deduct.

•Yeah the system is designed to encourage working, not penalize it. Just be honest about everything.

been on unemployment twice in the past 5 years and the process hasn't changed much. Still takes forever to get through on the phone if you have questions. That Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier actually sounds useful - wish I'd known about it before spending hours on hold.

•seems like getting help by phone is a real problem with this system
0 coins
Austin Leonard
•It really is. They have thousands of people trying to call every day and not enough staff. Third party services like Claimyr exist because the regular system is overwhelmed.

Don't stress too much about the process. Yes it's bureaucratic and slow, but millions of people go through it successfully. Follow the steps, be patient, and keep good records. You'll get through it.

•Yeah this forum is pretty helpful for Washington ESD questions. Lots of people who've been through the process.

One last thing - make sure you have a secure email address for your claim. Washington ESD sends important notices by email and if you miss them it can delay your benefits. Check your spam folder regularly too.

Hunter Brighton
•good tip, my email is pretty messy so i should probably clean it up first

Logan Chiang
•Yeah, maybe even create a dedicated email just for unemployment stuff if yours is really cluttered.

The weekly claims are pretty quick once you get used to them. Just answer the questions honestly about whether you worked, looked for work, and were available for work. Takes like 5 minutes every Sunday.
0 coins
Hunter Brighton
•do you have to file the weekly claims at a specific time or just sometime on sunday?
0 coins
Isla Fischer
•You can file anytime after 6am Sunday through 6pm the following Saturday. But most people do it Sunday morning to get it out of the way.

I went through this process last year and used Claimyr twice when I had issues. Once when my claim was stuck and once when I had questions about reporting freelance income. Both times they got me connected to someone who could actually help instead of just reading from a script.

Hunter Brighton
•how much does that service cost? if it saves time it might be worth it

Miles Hammonds
•I don't remember the exact cost but it was reasonable considering how much time it saved me. Way cheaper than missing work to spend all day calling.

Just remember that unemployment benefits are temporary. Use the time to actively look for work and maybe upgrade your skills. The job search requirement isn't just bureaucracy - it's meant to help you get back to work faster.

Hunter Brighton
•yeah i'm hoping this is just a short term thing until i find something better

•That's the right attitude. Most people find work before their benefits run out. Use the resources at WorkSource too - they have good job placement services.

The hardest part is just getting started. Once you file that initial claim and get into the routine of weekly filing, it becomes pretty automatic. Don't overthink it - just take it one step at a time.

Last bit of advice - keep your claim active even if you think you might have found a job. Don't stop filing weekly claims until you've actually started working and are sure the job is going to work out. You can always stop filing but it's harder to restart if things don't work out.

Hunter Brighton
•that's smart, better safe than sorry with this stuff

•Exactly. I've seen people stop filing when they got a job offer, then the job fell through and they had to start the whole process over.
