How do I collect unemployment benefits in Washington - complete beginner guide needed
I just got laid off from my warehouse job after 2 years and have never filed for unemployment before. I know I need to apply through Washington ESD but I'm completely lost on the process. Do I need to apply right away or can I wait a few days? What documents do I need to gather? I keep seeing people mention weekly claims but I don't even know what that means. Can someone walk me through the basic steps of how to collect unemployment in Washington? I really need help understanding this whole system.

You need to file your initial claim as soon as possible - don't wait! Go to esd.wa.gov and click on 'Apply for Benefits'. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, employment history for the last 18 months including employer names, addresses, dates of employment, and reason for separation. The system will calculate your weekly benefit amount based on your earnings.

•Thank you! Do I need pay stubs or will they verify my wages some other way?

•Washington ESD verifies wages directly with employers through their system, but it's good to have your pay stubs handy just in case there are any discrepancies.

After you file your initial claim, you'll need to file weekly claims every week to actually receive benefits. This is super important - even if your claim is still processing, you need to keep filing those weekly claims or you'll lose benefits for those weeks. You can do this online or by phone every week.

•What happens if I miss filing a weekly claim? Can I make it up later?

•You can sometimes backdate missed weeks but it's complicated and not guaranteed. Just set a reminder on your phone to file every Sunday - that's what I do.

•I missed 3 weeks when I first started and had to call Washington ESD to get it sorted out. Was a nightmare trying to get through to someone.

One thing that helped me when I couldn't reach Washington ESD by phone was using Claimyr.com - it's a service that gets you connected to an actual agent without waiting on hold for hours. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Really saved me when I had questions about my claim status.

•Is that legit? I've been trying to call Washington ESD for days and keep getting hung up on.

•Yeah it's totally legit. I was skeptical at first but it actually worked - got me through to a real person at Washington ESD in like 20 minutes instead of hours of busy signals.

Don't forget about the job search requirements! You need to be actively looking for work and log your job search activities. They require 3 job search activities per week and you need to keep records of everything you do.

•What counts as a job search activity? Just applying for jobs or other things too?

•Applying for jobs, attending job fairs, networking events, interviews, even some training activities count. Check the Washington ESD website for the full list.

•I thought it was only 2 activities per week? Did they change it recently?

•It's 3 activities per week for most people, but might be different if you're in certain programs or have other arrangements with WorkSource.

The whole process is honestly pretty overwhelming at first. I remember feeling the same way when I got laid off last year. Just take it one step at a time and don't be afraid to ask questions. The Washington ESD website has a lot of helpful guides too.

•Thanks for the encouragement! Did you have any issues with your claim getting delayed or anything?

•My claim went into adjudication for about 3 weeks because my employer contested it, but it got resolved eventually. Just be patient and keep filing your weekly claims.

Make sure you file your claim for the correct week - it's based on the calendar week (Sunday to Saturday), not when you actually file. And you can only file for the previous week, not future weeks.

•So if I file my initial claim today (Tuesday), when can I file my first weekly claim?

Adrian Hughes
•You'll file for last week (Sunday to Saturday) when you do your weekly claim. The system will guide you through which week you're filing for.

•This confused me so much when I started! I thought I was supposed to file for the current week I was living in.

One more tip - if your claim gets stuck in adjudication (which happens sometimes), don't panic. It just means they need to review something about your claim. Keep filing your weekly claims while you wait and it will get resolved.

•What kinds of things cause adjudication? I'm worried mine might get flagged for some reason.

•Common reasons are if you quit vs were laid off, if there are questions about your availability to work, or if your employer disputes the claim. Most get resolved in a few weeks.

THE SYSTEM IS SO BROKEN! I've been waiting 6 weeks for my claim to be approved and every time I call they tell me something different. These people have no idea what they're doing and don't care that we need money to survive!

•I feel your frustration but try not to give up. Have you tried using that Claimyr service someone mentioned? Might help you get through to someone who can actually help.

•Haven't tried it yet but at this point I'm willing to try anything. Thanks for the suggestion.

Also worth mentioning - you might be eligible for benefits even if you're working part-time. Washington has partial unemployment benefits if you're working reduced hours. Don't assume you can't file just because you're not completely unemployed.

•Good to know! I might be able to pick up some gig work while I'm looking for a full-time job.

•Just make sure you report any earnings on your weekly claims. They'll reduce your benefits accordingly but you might still get something.

Quick question - does anyone know if you need to register with WorkSource right away or can you wait until after your claim is approved?

Kai Rivera
•You should register with WorkSource as soon as possible. It's part of the job search requirements and they sometimes have additional resources to help with your job search.

•I waited to register and got a letter saying I needed to do it within a certain timeframe. Better to just do it when you file your initial claim.

The most important thing is just to get started. Don't overthink it - the system will walk you through most of the steps. I was so intimidated when I first had to file but it's really not as complicated as it seems once you get going.

•Good luck! And remember to file those weekly claims every week - that's the key to actually getting your benefits.

One last thing - if you run into problems reaching Washington ESD by phone, that Claimyr service really does work. I used it twice when I had issues and both times got connected to an agent who could actually help me. Worth trying if you get stuck.

•Seconding this - used Claimyr when my claim was stuck and finally got answers. The regular phone system is just impossible to get through.

•I'll keep that in mind if I run into any issues. Thanks again everyone!
