How do I claim unemployment benefit with Washington ESD - complete beginner here

I just got laid off from my job at a manufacturing plant and have never filed for unemployment before. I'm completely lost on how to claim unemployment benefit through Washington ESD. Do I need to go somewhere in person or can I do it online? What documents do I need to have ready? I heard there's something called weekly claims too but I don't understand what that means. Any help would be appreciated - I'm stressed about how I'm going to pay my bills.

You can file your initial claim online at esd.wa.gov - it's actually pretty straightforward once you get started. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment information for the last 18 months including employer names, addresses, and dates of employment. The weekly claims are what you file every week to actually receive your benefits - you have to do those to get paid.

Thanks! Do I need pay stubs or just the basic employment info?

0 coins

Just the basic info for the initial claim - Washington ESD will verify your wages with employers directly. Pay stubs can be helpful if you have gaps in employment dates though.

The online system walks you through everything step by step. Make sure you have a good internet connection because it can time out if you take too long on one page. Also, file your claim on Sunday or Monday if possible - the system gets overloaded later in the week and you might have trouble getting through.

0 coins

This is so true! I tried filing on Thursday and kept getting error messages. Finally got through on Sunday morning.

Good to know - I'll try early in the week. How long does the whole process take?

0 coins

The initial application takes about 30-45 minutes if you have all your info ready. Then you wait for approval which can take 1-3 weeks depending on if there are any issues.

I've been through this process twice and honestly the hardest part is getting through to Washington ESD if you have questions or problems. Their phone lines are constantly busy and you can spend hours trying to get through. I recently discovered this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you actually reach an agent - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me so much frustration when my claim got stuck in adjudication.

0 coins

Never heard of that before - does it actually work?

0 coins

Yeah it really does. I was skeptical at first but I got through to an agent in about 20 minutes instead of spending all day redialing. Worth it when you're dealing with claim issues.

0 coins

Hopefully I won't need that but good to know it exists if I run into problems.

Make sure you understand the job search requirements too. You have to be actively looking for work and keep a log of your job search activities. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week and they can audit you at any time.

0 coins

What counts as a job search activity? Just applying for jobs?

0 coins

Applying for jobs, attending job fairs, networking events, informational interviews, even some online training courses. The key is documenting everything in your job search log.

0 coins

ugh the job search thing is such a pain. like we're not already stressed enough about being unemployed now we have to jump through hoops to prove we're looking for work. the whole system is designed to make you give up

0 coins

I get the frustration but the requirements aren't that hard to meet if you're genuinely looking for work. Most people are doing those activities anyway.

0 coins

easy for you to say. some of us have been looking for months with no luck and having to document every rejection just adds insult to injury

Quick tip - when you file your weekly claims, do it on Sunday as soon as the system opens. You'll get paid faster that way. Also double check all your information before submitting because corrections can cause delays.

0 coins

When do the weekly claims usually open on Sunday?

0 coins

I think it's 6 AM but don't quote me on that. Just check the Washington ESD website for the exact time.

Don't forget you'll need to register with WorkSourceWA too. It's required for unemployment benefits and you have to keep your profile updated. They sometimes have job matching services that can help.

0 coins

Do I register for that separately or is it part of the unemployment application?

0 coins

It's separate but the unemployment application will prompt you to do it. You can register at worksourcewa.com

I remember being so confused about all this when I first filed. The terminology is overwhelming - adjudication, pending, disqualified, standby status. Don't panic if your claim goes into adjudication, it just means they need to verify something.

0 coins

What's adjudication exactly? That sounds scary.

0 coins

It's just when they need to investigate something about your claim - like verifying why you lost your job or checking your work history. Most of the time it resolves automatically.

0 coins

Unless it doesn't resolve automatically and you're stuck waiting for weeks like I was. That's when services like Claimyr become really helpful for getting through to an actual person.

0 coins

The waiting week is gone now which is good news. You used to have to wait a full week before you could get your first payment but they eliminated that during COVID and it's stayed that way.

0 coins

That's a relief. So I could potentially get paid next week if I file today?

0 coins

If your claim is approved and you file your weekly claim, yes. But it can take time for the debit card to arrive if you don't set up direct deposit.

0 coins

Set up direct deposit right away if you can. The debit cards they send can take forever to arrive and then you have to deal with ATM fees and all that nonsense.

0 coins

Good point. Can I set that up during the initial application?

0 coins

Yes, there's an option for it in the application. You'll need your bank routing and account numbers.

0 coins

My biggest mistake was not reading the handbook they give you. I thought I could just wing it but there are specific rules about reporting work and income that can mess up your benefits if you don't follow them exactly.

0 coins

Is there a lot to read? I'm worried about missing something important.

0 coins

It's not that long but the important stuff is scattered throughout. Focus on the sections about weekly claims, job search requirements, and reporting work.

0 coins

Just be prepared for the system to be slow and frustrating at times. Budget extra time for everything and don't wait until the last minute to file your weekly claims. The deadline is Saturday night but don't push it that far.

0 coins

What happens if you miss the deadline?

0 coins

You lose that week's benefits. They're pretty strict about it and there's a whole process to get it back that's not worth the hassle.

0 coins

I filed my claim 3 months ago and honestly the whole process has been smoother than I expected. The key is staying organized and not procrastinating on the weekly claims. Keep all your job search documentation in one place.

0 coins

Did you run into any major problems along the way?

0 coins

Nothing major. Had one week where my claim showed as pending but it resolved itself. The system usually works pretty well if you follow the rules.

0 coins

If you're getting severance pay or have any other income, make sure you report it correctly. I've heard horror stories about people getting overpayment notices months later because they didn't understand how to report things properly.

0 coins

I don't have severance but good to know. Do you report all income or just work income?

0 coins

Work income definitely. Other income depends on the type but when in doubt, report it. Better safe than sorry with overpayment issues.

0 coins

Download the Washington ESD app too if you have a smartphone. Makes filing weekly claims much easier than logging into the website every time.

0 coins

Didn't know there was an app. Is it reliable?

0 coins

Works fine for me. Sometimes it's actually faster than the website, especially during busy times.

0 coins

One thing nobody tells you is that you need to keep track of your benefit year. Your claim is only good for one year from when you filed, so if you're still unemployed after that you might need to refile.

0 coins

Hopefully I won't be unemployed that long but thanks for the heads up.

0 coins

Yeah nobody plans for it but good to know. Also you only get a certain number of weeks of benefits total, not unlimited.

0 coins

The most important thing is just to start the process. Don't overthink it - the system will guide you through most of it and you can always ask questions later. I spent a week researching everything before filing and honestly could have just started right away.

0 coins

You're right, I should just get started. Thanks everyone for all the helpful advice!

0 coins

Good luck! The first time is always intimidating but it gets easier once you're in the routine.

0 coins

If you do run into issues where you need to speak with someone at Washington ESD and can't get through on the phone, that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier is legit. I used it last month when my benefits got stopped for some reason and I needed answers. Much better than spending entire days trying to call.

0 coins

How much does something like that cost?

0 coins

I'd rather not get into specific pricing but for me it was worth it to solve my problem quickly instead of losing weeks of benefits while trying to reach someone the normal way.
