How can I qualify for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD?
I'm trying to figure out if I qualify for unemployment benefits in Washington state. My job ended last month due to company downsizing and I've never filed for unemployment before. What are the basic requirements to qualify for Washington ESD benefits? I worked for about 2 years at my last job making around $45,000 annually. Do I need to have worked a certain amount of time or earned a minimum amount? Also worried about the job search requirements - what exactly do I need to do to stay eligible?

To qualify for Washington ESD unemployment benefits, you need to meet several requirements: 1) You must have earned wages in at least two quarters during your base period (usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters), 2) Your total base period wages must be at least 680 times the state minimum wage, 3) You must be unemployed through no fault of your own, 4) You must be able and available to work, and 5) You must actively search for work. Since you worked 2 years making $45k, you should easily meet the wage requirements.

•Thank you! That's really helpful. What counts as 'actively searching for work'? How many jobs do I need to apply to each week?

•You need to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep a detailed log. This can include applying for jobs, attending job fairs, networking activities, or contacting employers directly. You'll need to report these activities when you file your weekly claims.

Just went through this process myself. The hardest part isn't qualifying - it's actually getting through to Washington ESD when you have questions! Their phone lines are always busy and the website can be confusing for first-time filers.

•Yeah I'm already dreading having to call them if I run into issues. How long did your claim take to get approved?

•Mine took about 3 weeks, but I know some people who waited longer if they had any complications in their work history.

If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone, I recently discovered this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps people get through to unemployment offices. They have this demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Basically they handle the calling and waiting for you, then connect you when an agent picks up. Saved me hours of frustration when I needed to check on my claim status.

•How much does something like that cost? Seems like it could be expensive.

•They focus on the value of actually reaching an agent rather than the cost. For me it was worth it to avoid spending entire days trying to get through on my own.

•Interesting, I'll keep that in mind if I can't get through the normal way. Hopefully I won't need to call them at all!

Make sure you file your claim as soon as possible! There's a waiting week in Washington, so the sooner you file, the sooner you can start receiving benefits. Don't wait thinking you might find a job quickly - you can always stop claiming if you get hired.

•Good point! I was thinking I should wait a bit longer to see if I heard back from any applications. But I'll file this week.

•Definitely file now. Even if you get a job offer next week, you'll have the claim started and can just stop filing weekly claims. But if you don't find something soon, you'll be glad you started the process early.

One thing to keep in mind - if you were laid off due to company downsizing, that should clearly qualify as 'not your fault.' Make sure you have documentation of the layoff (termination letter, WARN notice if applicable, etc.) in case Washington ESD needs verification during the adjudication process.

•I do have the termination letter that mentions the downsizing. Should I upload that when I file my initial claim?

•Keep it ready but they might not ask for it immediately. Washington ESD will contact you if they need additional documentation during their review process.

Also remember you'll need to register with WorkSource Washington and create a job seeker profile. It's part of the requirements for maintaining your benefits. The registration is free and you can do it online.

•Is that something I do before filing my unemployment claim or after?

•You can do it either before or after filing your initial claim, but you'll need it set up before you start filing weekly claims. I'd recommend doing it soon after filing your initial application.

Just want to second the Claimyr recommendation from earlier. I was skeptical at first but when I couldn't reach Washington ESD for over a week about an issue with my weekly claim, I tried it and actually got through to an agent the same day. Sometimes you just need to talk to someone to get answers.

•Good to hear from someone else who used it. I'm hoping I won't need to call at all but it's reassuring to know there are options.

Don't forget about the tax implications! Unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can choose to have taxes withheld from your weekly payments or pay them later when you file your tax return. I always recommend having them withheld to avoid a big tax bill later.

•Oh wow, I hadn't thought about that. Can I change that option later if I decide I want taxes withheld?

Max Reyes
•Yes, you can change your tax withholding preference when you file your weekly claims. There's an option to update it in your online account.

What if I have some part-time work while collecting unemployment? I know you can work part-time but I'm not sure how it affects the benefit amount.

•In Washington, you can earn up to your weekly benefit amount minus $5 without it affecting your unemployment benefits. Anything above that gets deducted dollar for dollar from your weekly payment. You must report all earnings when filing your weekly claim.

•That's actually pretty generous compared to what I expected. Thanks for clarifying!

Based on your salary of $45k, your weekly benefit amount will probably be around $400-500, depending on your exact wages during the base period. Washington ESD calculates it based on your highest earning quarter.

Ashley Simian
•That would definitely help with my monthly expenses. How long can I collect benefits for?

Mikayla Davison
•In Washington, you can collect for up to 26 weeks in most cases, though it depends on your earnings during the base period. Some people qualify for fewer weeks if their earnings were lower.

Make sure you understand the difference between being 'able and available' versus 'actively seeking work.' You need to be both! If you go on vacation or get sick, you need to report that because you wouldn't be available for work those days.

•So if I get a cold for a few days, I need to report that on my weekly claim?

•If you're too sick to work, yes. It's better to be honest about it than to get caught in a discrepancy later.

The whole system is designed to make it hard for people to get benefits they deserve. Just saying. But since you were laid off through no fault of your own and worked steady for 2 years, you should be fine.

•I'm trying to stay optimistic about the process. Hopefully it goes smoothly since my situation seems straightforward.

One more tip about Claimyr - I found it especially useful when I had questions about my job search requirements. The Washington ESD agents were able to explain exactly what activities counted and how to properly document them. Much better than trying to figure it out from the website alone.

•That's exactly the kind of guidance I think I'll need. The job search requirements seem pretty detailed.

Don't stress too much about the job search requirements. As long as you're genuinely looking for work and keeping good records, you'll be fine. I kept a simple spreadsheet with company names, positions, dates, and contact methods.

•A spreadsheet is a great idea. Did Washington ESD ever actually ask to see your job search log?

•They can audit your job search activities, but I was never asked to provide mine. Still, it's better to have it ready just in case.

Just remember that the first week you file is a waiting week - you won't get paid for that week even if you're approved. So your first payment will be for the second week you file.

Good luck with your claim! The process seems overwhelming at first but once you get into the routine of filing weekly claims it becomes pretty straightforward.

One last thing - make sure you have all your previous employer information ready when you file. You'll need dates of employment, reason for separation, and sometimes contact information. Having it organized beforehand makes the application process much smoother.

•I'll gather all that information before I start the application. Really appreciate everyone's help!

best of luck! unemployment saved me when i got laid off last year. dont let anyone make you feel bad about claiming benefits - you paid into the system through your taxes

•Thank you for saying that. I do feel like I've earned these benefits through my work history.

Also wanted to mention that if you have any issues with your claim getting stuck in adjudication or need to speak with someone about complex questions, that Claimyr service really does work. I was hesitant to try it but after being on hold for hours multiple times, it was worth it to actually reach an agent who could help.
