ESD weekly claim confusion - report final paycheck on which week?

I started my unemployment claim with ESD on 2/9 after being laid off on 2/7. My employer is giving me my final paycheck this Friday (2/21), and I'm totally confused about when to report this income. Do I report it on this week's claim or wait until next week? Does the weekly claim cover the previous week's income? I've never filed for unemployment before and I don't want to mess up my claim by reporting income in the wrong week. Anyone know the correct way to handle this?

When you file your weekly claim, you're reporting for the previous week (Sunday-Saturday). So when you file this coming Sunday (2/23), you're reporting for the week of 2/16-2/22, which would include your final paycheck on 2/21. The important thing is when you're PAID, not when you earned the money. Hope that helps!

Thanks! So I should definitely include it in this Sunday's weekly claim then? I think I was overthinking it.

u should report it in the week u actually RECEIVE the check not when u worked those hours. ESD cares about when u got paid not when u worked

This is right. I messed this up on my claim last year and had to deal with an overpayment notice later. Not fun!

The weekly claim you file each Sunday is for the previous week (Sunday through Saturday). The key thing to remember with ESD is that you report income for the week you RECEIVE it, not when you earned it. So if your final check comes on 2/21, you would report it when filing your weekly claim on 2/23 (for the week of 2/16-2/22). Also, make sure you're reporting the gross amount (before taxes and deductions). That's another common mistake people make.

Thank you for the detailed explanation! I'll definitely report the gross amount. Do you know if I need to upload any kind of paystub as proof, or just enter the amount?

I had the EXACT same question when I first got laid off!! The whole ESD system is so confusing. Everyone here is right - you report income in the week you GET PAID not when you earned it. So your 2/21 check gets reported in the weekly claim you file on 2/23. BTW if you ever need to actually TALK to someone at ESD (which I eventually did), good luck getting through their phone lines!! I finally used a service called Claimyr that got me connected to an ESD agent in about 30 minutes instead of spending days trying to get through. Their site is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 Seriously saved my sanity when I had questions the website couldn't answer!

Thank you! I was wondering about how to reach them if I had more questions. I'll check out that service if I get stuck again. Appreciate the info!

Yes, vacation payout definitely counts as income and needs to be reported to ESD. Report it for the week you received the payment. If you didn't report it previously, you should contact ESD to correct this before they discover it during their regular cross-checks with employer reporting (which could lead to an overpayment notice).

The ESD system is deliberately designed to TRICK people into making mistakes so they can DENY benefits!!! I reported my final check exactly as instructed and they STILL hit me with an "overpayment" notice six months later claiming I did it wrong. The entire unemployment system in this state is broken and they make it impossible to get help when you need it most.

I feel your pain! Took me 4 months to resolve an "adjudication" that was their mistake to begin with.

One more thing to keep in mind - if your final check includes regular wages AND vacation/PTO payout, you need to report the full amount (both regular wages and vacation payout) for the week you receive it. ESD considers all of that as income for benefit calculation purposes.

That's really helpful to know. My final check does include some unused PTO hours, so I'll make sure to include the full amount. Thanks again for all the helpful information everyone!
