ESD still asking for weekly claims after benefits exhausted - normal or system error?
I exhausted my regular unemployment benefits about three weeks ago (used up all 26 weeks), but I'm still getting those automated notices from ESD telling me to file my weekly claims. Is this normal procedure after benefits run out, or should I be doing something else? I'm confused because the notices make it sound like I should keep claiming, but my account balance shows $0.00 and my benefit year doesn't end until November 2025. I've tried calling ESD like 20+ times but either get disconnected or stuck on hold forever. Anyone else experienced this after exhausting benefits? Should I keep filing claims or is it pointless if I've maxed out my benefit amount?

Keep filing those weekly claims! The system automatically sends notices even after you've exhausted benefits. This is actually intentional - ESD recommends continuing to file because: 1) If you qualify for an extension (which sometimes happens if state unemployment gets high enough), you'll already be in the system 2) It helps maintain accurate unemployment statistics 3) In rare cases, ESD might find additional eligibility during review I went through this last year and kept filing for about 6 weeks after exhaustion. Nothing came of it for me, but the agent I eventually spoke with confirmed it was the right thing to do. Just make sure you're still doing your 3 job search activities each week.

•Thanks for the info! That makes sense - I'll keep filing then. Do you know if there are any extensions available right now? Or any other programs I should look into since my regular UI is done?

DONT WASTE UR TIME!!! the system is broken and they dont care about us. i filed for 2 months after my benefits ran out and got NOTHING for it except wasted time. they just want to keep their unemployment numbers looking better by having people file even when theres no money!!!!

•That's not entirely accurate. While the current unemployment rates aren't triggering any automatic extensions, filing consistently keeps you in the system if anything changes. It's up to each person whether they want to continue filing, but there are valid reasons ESD recommends it.

The notices are automated, and yes, ESD does encourage continued claims filing even after exhaustion for statistical and potential future benefit reasons. Currently, there are no federal or state extensions available in Washington as our unemployment rate is below the threshold that would trigger those programs. You might want to look into: - WorkSource career services (free job search help) - Training Benefits Program (if you qualify for retraining) - Basic Food Employment & Training (BFET) if eligible Also, if you haven't been able to reach ESD and have specific questions about your claim, you might try Claimyr (claimyr.com). I was stuck in a similar situation and they helped me get through to an actual ESD agent within about 30 minutes instead of the endless redial game. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3

•Thank you for the detailed response! I'll check out WorkSource this week. Has anyone tried this Claimyr service? I'm getting desperate to talk to someone at ESD about possible next steps.

•Actually, ignoring the notices isn't the best advice. If you ever need to reopen your claim during your benefit year or if additional benefits become available, having a gap in your weekly claim filing can create complications. It only takes a few minutes each week to submit a claim.

This is completely normal. The system sends out those notifications automatically regardless of your benefit status. During my stint on unemployment last year, I received those notices for nearly two months after exhausting benefits. You have a couple options: 1. Continue filing weekly claims (takes 5 mins but keeps you in the system) 2. Simply ignore the notices There are currently no extensions available in WA since our unemployment rate is relatively low. If you're still job hunting, make sure to register with WorkSource - they offer free workshops, resume help, and sometimes have connections to employers that aren't advertising openly. Good luck!

•Thanks for sharing your experience! I might try that if I can't get through on my own this week. Did they explain anything about programs after regular UI benefits end?

It si weird but I think they want you to keep filling out the wekly claim forms even with $0 bennefits left. When mine ran out the lady on the fone told me to keep doing it for the "oficcial record" even tho I wouldn't get any more money. Made no sense to me but I did it for a while cause I was scared of messing something up.

•Yes, that's correct. It's for the official unemployment statistics and to maintain your claim in case any additional benefits become available. You won't receive money when your balance is zero, but filing keeps your claim active during your benefit year.
