ESD status 'processing' vs 'pending' - which is better at week 6?

I'm completely confused about my claim status. I've been unemployed for 6 weeks now after the tech company I worked for downsized our entire department. When I check my weekly claims in eServices, ALL of them show 'processing' - not a single payment has gone through. Is 'processing' better than 'pending'? I thought after a few weeks something would change, but they're all still stuck. Does anyone know what this means? Is this normal at week 6? Starting to seriously worry about making rent next month.

'Processing' actually means ESD has received your claim and is working on it. 'Pending' usually means there's something missing or they need more information from you. So yes, 'processing' is technically better, but 6 weeks is definitely too long. You should be in 'paid' status by now. There's probably an adjudication issue that hasn't been flagged in your account. Check your notices/letters in eServices to see if there's anything you missed.

Thanks, I checked my letters and there's nothing new there. Just the initial confirmation when I first applied. No requests for information or anything. I'm starting to worry my claim is just lost in the system or something.

ur probably stuck in adjudication but they never told u... same thing happened 2 me last yr. ESD is so bad at communicating!! call them everyday until u get through, thats the only way 2 fix it

I've tried calling like 20 times already. Either busy signal or the automated system just hangs up on me. It's driving me crazy.

Calling ESD is literally the worst. I spent 3 weeks trying to get through when my claim was stuck. Then I tried Claimyr.com and they got me connected to an ESD agent in like 20 minutes. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 that shows how it works. Was totally worth it to finally talk to someone who could tell me what was going on with my claim and fix the issue.

The status terminology at ESD is DELIBERATELY CONFUSING to prevent people from getting benefits they're entitled to!!! I was stuck in "processing" for TWO MONTHS before I found out they needed ONE PIECE of information they NEVER ASKED FOR. The system is BROKEN by design. You need to email your state representative - that's the ONLY thing that worked for me. ESD suddenly fixed everything the day after my rep's office contacted them. COINCIDENCE? I THINK NOT!

While I understand your frustration, the processing vs. pending distinction is actually just about workflow status. Processing means they have all required information and are reviewing the claim. Pending means they're waiting for something specific. The long wait times aren't by design - they're due to staffing shortages and outdated computer systems. That said, contacting your representative can definitely help speed things up in stuck cases.

Then WHY don't they TELL YOU what they're "processing"?? If it takes 6+ weeks to "process" a simple claim somethings SERIOUSLY wrong with their system. And why do claims magically get fixed right after a state rep calls? EXPLAIN THAT.

my brothers claim was stuck on procesing for like 2 months and then suddenly all the money showed up in his account one day. no explanation or anything just randomly fixed itself maybe yours will too good luck

That's both encouraging and terrifying. I can't just sit around hoping it fixes itself but it's good to know it eventually worked out for your brother.

I work with ESD claims regularly, and here's what's likely happening: When ALL weeks show as processing after 6 weeks, it typically indicates one of three issues: 1. Identity verification problem (most common) 2. Employer dispute that hasn't been properly flagged 3. System hold that requires manual review The fact that you haven't received any notifications suggests it's likely the third option. Your claim is probably in the adjudication queue without being properly flagged as such in the system. Here's what you should do: 1. Send a secure message through eServices specifically asking if your claim is in adjudication 2. Call first thing Monday at 8:00am (their least busy time) 3. Make sure your identity verification is complete in the system 4. Check that all requested documents are uploaded Processing is better than pending, but at 6 weeks, something is definitely holding up your claim.

This is incredibly helpful, thank you! I've already sent messages through eServices with no response, but I didn't specifically ask about adjudication. I'll try again with your suggested wording and definitely try calling right at 8am. I did complete the ID verification when I first applied, but maybe something went wrong with it.

this happened to me too last year! ugh so frustrating. mine was because my former employer contested my claim but ESD never bothered to tell me for like 2 months. i was checking my account everyday seeing 'processing' and pulling my hair out.

How did you finally find out what was happening? Did you eventually get through on the phone?

yep finally got through on the phone after like a million tries. the lady told me my employer said i was fired for misconduct (NOT TRUE) but nobody ever asked me for my side of the story! had to do a whole appeal thing but eventually got my money. such a mess.

Update on my earlier comment - I just remembered that sometimes claims get stuck in processing when there's a wage verification issue. Did you work in more than one state in your base year? Or did you have any unusual income (like contractor work) mixed with regular employment? That can trigger extra verification that doesn't show up as a specific request.

Actually yes! I did some contracting work for about 3 months last year between full-time jobs. I reported it on my application but maybe that's causing the issue. Thanks for pointing that out, I'll specifically mention it when I call.

I had a similar experience a few months ago. After weeks of trying to call ESD and getting nowhere, I used Claimyr.com to get through to an agent. Found out my claim was stuck because of a simple system flag that needed manual clearing. The agent fixed it while I was on the phone and all my weeks switched from processing to paid within 48 hours. Seriously worth checking out their video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 if you're desperate to talk to someone at ESD.

I've never heard of this service before. Is it legitimate? Seems weird to pay just to talk to a government agency I should be able to contact directly.

I had the same concern, but it's just a callback service. They don't access your ESD account or anything. They just connect you with an actual ESD agent. After spending weeks unable to get through, it was worth it for me. But totally understand the hesitation.

Update: I FINALLY got through to ESD this morning! Called right at 8am like someone suggested. Turns out my claim has been in adjudication this whole time due to the contractor work I did last year. The agent said they need to verify my earnings from that period. She expedited my claim and said I should see movement within 7-10 business days. Thank you everyone for your help and suggestions!

Great news! The contractor work verification is very common. Make sure to continue filing your weekly claims while you wait, and you should receive all back payments once they complete the verification. If you don't see movement within those 7-10 days, call again and reference the expedite request with the date.
