ESD phone system not offering option to file weekly claim - forced to use eServices

Has anyone noticed that when you call the ESD unemployment number (1-800-318-6022), they don't give you the option to file your weekly claim by phone anymore? I've been trying to reach them because my internet is super unreliable in my rural area, and I thought I could just file by phone like I did back in 2020. But now when I call, the automated system just tells me to go online to eServices. I don't see any option in the phone menu to file my claim. Did they remove this feature? I can technically file online, but it's a huge hassle when my connection keeps dropping. Any advice on how to file by phone these days?

They phased out phone claim filing for most people around late 2023. ESD has been pushing everyone to use eServices for weekly claims because it's more efficient for their system. The phone option now is mostly just for people with approved accommodations who can't use the online system due to disabilities. If internet access is a serious problem for you, you might be able to request an accommodation, but it requires documentation and approval.

Thanks for explaining! That's frustrating they didn't make this change more clear. Do you know how I would go about requesting that accommodation? Is there a specific form on the website?

THEY DONT CARE about rural folks!! I've been dealing with this since January. My internet goes out every time it rains and I missed 2 weekly claims because of it. When I finally got thru to ESD they said "too bad" basically and I had to file an appeal just to get those weeks paid. The system is BROKEN

Did you win your appeal? I'm in a similar situation with spotty satellite internet and worried about missing my filing deadlines.

have you tried using the esd mobile app? works better than the website when signals weak

There's an ESD mobile app?? I didn't know that! Is it called eServices too or something else? That might actually solve my problem if it works on weak signals.

I've been helping my mother with her unemployment claims, and she struggled with the same issue. For those with internet challenges, there are actually three options now: 1. Use the mobile app as mentioned (uses less data than the website) 2. Visit your local WorkSource office where they have computers you can use 3. Request a reasonable accommodation through ESD For option #3, you need to call 833-572-8400 (the ESD general services line) and specifically ask about filing a request for reasonable accommodation due to your internet access issues. They'll send you a form that needs to be completed. From my experience helping my mom, they're actually pretty understanding about rural internet problems. Also worth noting: if you're near a library, most have free internet and computers you can use to file your weekly claim. It's not ideal, but it's a backup option.

Thank you so much for these detailed options! I didn't know about the WorkSource computers either. There's one about 30 minutes from me, so I might try that next week. Going to download that app first though. Really appreciate the help!

I had the exact same issue trying to file by phone! I was getting so frustrated hitting different options trying to find where to file my claim. Finally called my brother who told me they stopped that service. Would've been nice if they sent out a notice or something instead of just removing it...

They DID send notices!!! It was in the mail they sent out in November. But of course they expect everyone to read every piece of mail perfectly. Just another way they make it harder to get benefits we EARNED.

If you're struggling to connect with ESD about this issue or need to discuss accommodation options, I'd recommend trying Claimyr. When I needed to talk to an actual person at ESD about my claim issues, they got me through to an agent without hours of waiting. You can check out how it works at claimyr.com or watch their demo video: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. It really helped when I was desperate to talk to someone about my claim status.

does this actually work? been trying to reach esd for 2 weeks about adjudication

I was in a similar situation with poor internet connectivity. What worked for me was actually going to my local library once a week to file my claim. They have computers with reliable internet, and it's free to use. Many libraries even have staff who can help you navigate the eServices website if you're not tech-savvy. Just bring your ESD account information and ID. I know it's not as convenient as filing by phone, but it's a reliable workaround until you can figure out a better solution.

The library is a good idea! There's one in town that I could use. Honestly between the app suggestion, WorkSource option, and the library, I think I have enough backups now. Still wish they'd bring back the phone option though!

Just to follow up on the accommodation request process: if you decide to go that route, be prepared to provide documentation about why you need the phone filing option. They typically want some evidence of your internet connectivity issues. A letter from your internet service provider acknowledging service problems in your area can be helpful. The review process takes about 2-3 weeks in my experience helping clients with this issue.

That's a great point about documentation. Also worth noting that while waiting for accommodation approval, you're still responsible for filing weekly claims on time, so having those backup options (library, WorkSource, etc.) is essential during the waiting period.
