ESD payment timing after 'pending' status with separation/termination verification?
Just got off a call with ESD and I'm more confused than when I started. My claim has been stuck in 'pending' status for over a week because of what they're calling a 'separation issue' - apparently they need to verify I was fired and didn't quit. The agent couldn't give me a straight answer about how long I'll be waiting before I see actual money in my account. Has anyone gone through this verification process recently? How long did it take from pending to payment after they confirmed your job separation details? Bills are piling up fast and my savings are practically gone already. Really stressing about this!

•4 WEEKS?? Ugh I can't wait that long. Did they tell you it would take that long or did you just have to sit around waiting?

The separation issue verification timeline can vary quite a bit. In my experience helping others navigate this, it typically takes 2-3 weeks for ESD to complete their verification process once they've contacted your former employer. Your employer has 10 business days to respond to ESD's inquiry about your termination. If they don't respond, ESD will generally make a determination based on your statement alone, which can work in your favor. Make sure you've uploaded any documentation that proves you were fired rather than quit - termination letters, emails, final pay stubs with separation codes, etc. This can speed things up considerably. And definitely keep filing your weekly claims during this waiting period!

•Thank you for the detailed info. My termination was over a heated argument with my manager, so I'm worried they might tell ESD something different than what actually happened. I have some text messages from coworkers talking about it - should I upload those too?

I went through this exact situation in January 2025. The separation verification took 18 days in my case. Here's what you need to know: 1. ESD has to verify with your employer that you were fired rather than quit, as this affects eligibility. 2. If you were fired for misconduct, that could cause further delays or denial (hopefully that's not your situation). 3. If your former employer disputes your claim or says you quit, you'll enter adjudication, which adds more time. 4. Once verified, ESD will process backpay for all properly filed weekly claims. I'd recommend uploading any documentation you have that proves termination - emails, termination letters, or even text messages discussing your firing. Anything that supports your case could speed things up.

•They didn't formally fire me with documentation - my manager just told me to leave and not come back after we argued about scheduling. I'm worried they might say I walked out voluntarily. Would text messages to friends from that day mentioning I was fired be helpful?

THE SYSTEM IS RIGGED!! They DELIBERATELY make you wait for WEEKS hoping you'll give up! I waited 7 weeks with my separation issue because my employer lied and said I was fired for misconduct when I was actually laid off! Had to appeal and everything. ESD doesn't care if your bills are due - they just want to pay out as little as possible!!!!

If you're struggling to get through to ESD for updates (which you should do regularly to check status), I've had success using Claimyr to connect with agents quickly. I was in the same situation with a separation issue and was getting nowhere with regular calls. Used their service at claimyr.com and got through to an agent in about 20 minutes who actually helped push my claim along. There's a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 It really helped me get clarity on my situation instead of being stuck in the dark for weeks.

•I hadn't heard of that before. Does it actually work? The ESD call system is so frustrating - I spent 2 hours on hold yesterday before getting disconnected.

To answer your original question more specifically - my separation verification took 22 days from when my claim first showed 'pending' until the money hit my account. This was in February 2025. However, I've seen it take anywhere from 2-6 weeks depending on how quickly your employer responds and whether they dispute anything.

i think ur confused about something - separation issue isnt the same as adjudication. separation just means they need to confirm why u left ur job. adjudication is like a whole investigation thing that takes way longer. which one did they say ur in?

•They specifically said it's a separation issue and my claim status shows 'pending' not 'adjudication' so I think I'm just in the verification stage? I'm not totally sure though, the terminology is confusing.

In response to your question about text messages - yes, absolutely upload those! Any contemporaneous documentation showing you were fired can help your case. Text messages to friends or family sent on the day it happened describing the situation can be considered evidence. Also, try writing a detailed statement about exactly what happened and submit that through your ESD account. The more documentation you provide upfront, the less likely they'll need to go into a lengthy adjudication process. And yes, keep calling them at least twice a week for updates. Sometimes a proactive claimant gets faster service simply because you're demonstrating the urgency of your situation.

•this is good advice! i wish i had known to upload messages when i was dealing with my claim. would have saved me like 2 weeks of waiting probly

One important thing to note - if your claim eventually moves from 'pending' to 'adjudication,' that means your employer has disputed something or there's a potential eligibility issue. At that point, you should receive a fact-finding questionnaire. Complete it immediately with as much detail as possible. If you get to this stage, the timeline can extend significantly, potentially 6-8 weeks. However, if your claim stays in 'pending' for separation verification only, most people see resolution within 3-4 weeks. The key is making sure ESD has all your contact information correct so they can reach you if they need additional information.

Just to confirm what others have said - yes, there's a difference between a simple separation verification (1-3 weeks typically) and full adjudication (4-8 weeks or more). Based on what you've described, it sounds like your claim is just going through standard separation verification since you were terminated. As long as your employer confirms you were fired and doesn't claim misconduct, you should see movement within 3 weeks from when it first went pending. I always recommend having documentation ready that proves: 1. You were employed (pay stubs) 2. You were terminated (any communication about termination) 3. The date of separation (to confirm you're eligible from that date forward) Keep this documentation ready in case ESD requests it.

•Thank you for clearing that up. I've been filing my weekly claims religiously and uploaded some screenshots of texts with coworkers from the day I was fired. Fingers crossed it doesn't go to full adjudication!

my cousin works at esd and she says they're super understaffed right now. claims are taking way longer than the "normal" timeframes everyone is mentioning. just fyi

Regarding Claimyr - yes, it actually works. I was skeptical at first too, but after trying to get through to ESD for 3 days with no luck, I decided to try it. Got connected to an agent who could actually see my claim details and gave me specific information about why it was pending and what I needed to do next. Definitely better than guessing or waiting for letters that may never come. The peace of mind was worth it for me.

•I might try that if I don't see any movement by next week. Did the agent you talked to through that service have the ability to actually do anything with your claim or just give you information?

The agent I spoke with was able to see exactly what was causing the hold up and added notes to my claim. In my case, they saw my employer hadn't responded yet and put in a follow-up request. They couldn't instantly approve my claim or anything, but they could escalate it and provide me with actual information instead of generic responses. That specific knowledge helped me know what to do next.
