ESD claim suddenly went into adjudication after receiving first payment - what happened?

This is driving me crazy! My unemployment claim was finally approved after waiting almost 3 weeks. I got my first payment ($546) deposited last Tuesday, and I was so relieved. Then literally THE NEXT DAY, I check my account and suddenly it says

This happened to me back in January. After my first payment, they randomly put my claim into adjudication because they needed to verify some information about my previous employer. The system sometimes flags claims for review even after initial approval if something doesn't match up in their records. In my case, they were verifying my reason for separation since my employer gave a slightly different story than I did. You should check your eServices account for any new questionnaires they might want you to fill out. Sometimes they don't send notifications about these.

Thank you for responding! I just checked and don't see any new questionnaires. Should I call them? I'm worried that if I just wait, I'll miss something important and my claim will be denied.

adjudication means they r investigating somthing... could be anything. my freind had this happen bcuz his employer said he quit but he said he was laid off... took 5 weeks to fix!!!

5 WEEKS?! Oh my god I can't wait that long! Did your friend keep filing weekly claims during that time?

ya he kept filing every week and when they finally fixed it he got all the back pay at once. but it was super stressful for him

When a claim goes into adjudication after initial approval, it's typically because new information has come to light that requires review. This could be something your former employer submitted, a discrepancy in reported wages, or even something as simple as answering a weekly claim question differently than expected. \n\nHere's what you should do:\n1. Keep filing your weekly claims without fail\n2. Check your eServices account daily for any new questionnaires or fact-finding interviews\n3. Check your physical mail and email for any correspondence from ESD\n4. If you see nothing new in 7-10 days, you should definitely try to contact ESD directly\n\nAdjudication can take anywhere from 2-6 weeks depending on the complexity of the issue and current workload. But don't panic - many adjudications resolve in favor of the claimant, especially if you've been truthful in all your reporting.

Thank you for the detailed explanation. I'll definitely keep filing my claims. I'm just worried about how I'm going to pay bills if this drags on for weeks. I wish they would at least tell me what the issue is!

I had the EXACT same thing happen last month!!! Got one payment then BOOM - adjudication out of nowhere! In my case it was because I accidentally put down I was available for work only 5 days instead of 7 on one of my weekly claims (I misunderstood the question). When I finally got through to ESD (took FOREVER), they cleared it up right away and my payments started again the next week. The system is super sensitive to ANY little change or inconsistency.

That's good to hear it was resolved quickly once you reached them! How did you finally get through? I've called 8 times today and either get a busy signal or it hangs up after the automated message.

If you're having trouble getting through to ESD, I had a great experience using Claimyr (claimyr.com) last month when my claim got stuck. They basically hold your place in line and call you back when they have an ESD agent on the line. Saved me hours of redial hell. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. Totally worth it because I got my issue resolved in one day instead of waiting weeks.

I've herd mixed things about these services. Doesn't ESD get mad if u use 3rd party? I thought they'd just hang up if they knew u used something like that

Not at all - they don't even know you've used it. All Claimyr does is wait on hold for you and connect you directly with an ESD agent. Once you're talking to ESD, it's just you and them. I was skeptical too but it worked perfectly.

Thanks for the suggestion! At this point I'm willing to try anything because I'm getting desperate. I'll check out the video.

THIS IS WHY I HATE ESD!!!! They do this ALL THE TIME!!! They give you one payment to make you think everything is fine then WHAM! they hit you with adjudication! Then you wait FOREVER while bills pile up and they don't care AT ALL! The whole system is designed to frustrate people so they'll give up! I went through this TWICE last year and both times they eventually approved my benefits but I had to fight for EVERY PENNY. The worst part is they NEVER explain what the problem is until you finally get someone on the phone which is basically IMPOSSIBLE!!!

While I understand your frustration, I don't think the system is deliberately designed to be difficult. ESD has to verify claims to prevent fraud, which unfortunately means legitimate claims sometimes get caught in the process. In most cases, adjudication happens because something needs verification, not because they're trying to deny benefits.

Maybe not DESIGNED that way but it sure WORKS that way! They could at least TELL PEOPLE why their claim is in adjudication instead of making everyone panic and spend hours trying to call them!!!

I'm definitely feeling the frustration right now. I just wish they'd give me some indication of what they're investigating so I could at least prepare or provide the right information.

One thing that's important to mention - even though your claim is in adjudication, you should absolutely continue to file your weekly claims on time. If the adjudication is resolved in your favor, you'll receive all the back payments for those weeks. If you stop filing, you won't get paid for those weeks even if the adjudication issue is eventually cleared up.

Thank you - I'll definitely keep filing. Does answering the weekly claim questions the same way every week help avoid additional issues? I'm paranoid about making any changes now.

It's best to answer truthfully each week rather than automatically answering the same way. If your circumstances change at all (like you worked some hours or had a job interview), report it accurately. Consistency is good but accuracy is more important.

That makes sense. I'm being truthful but was worried that even small changes might trigger more problems. I'll just keep being accurate and hope this resolves soon.

UPDATE: I finally got through to ESD this morning after trying the Claimyr service that someone recommended. The adjudication was because my former employer reported a slightly different last day of work than I did (I put my last physical day in the office, they put the date my final paycheck covered through). The agent fixed it right on the call and said my claim should be back to paid status within 48 hours! Such a relief. Thank you everyone for your advice!

That's great news! This is a perfect example of why speaking directly with ESD can resolve issues quickly. A small discrepancy like that is common and easily fixed. Glad you got it sorted out!

Yes, such a relief! And the agent told me I should receive payment for this week plus the one I missed during adjudication by next Tuesday. So glad I kept filing my weekly claims as everyone suggested!
