ESD adjudication timeframe suddenly extended - was 2 weeks now 6+ weeks?

I lost my restaurant manager job last month and filed for unemployment right away. My claim got flagged for adjudication about 3 weeks ago for 'job separation issue' even though I was clearly laid off due to the restaurant closing. The ESD website initially said adjudication typically takes 1-2 weeks, but when I called yesterday (after trying for DAYS to get through), the automated message now says it's taking 6+ weeks! Has anyone gone through adjudication recently? How long did it actually take? I've got rent due next week and my savings are almost gone. This is seriously stressful.

Mine took exactly 7 weeks and 3 days from when it first showed 'adjudication in progress' to when it was resolved. That was just last month. They're definitely backed up right now because of all the retail and restaurant closures happening. Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims during this time though! When they finally approve it (assuming they do), they'll pay all those weeks at once.

7 weeks?! That's insane, I can't wait that long. Did they tell you why it took so long or give you any updates during the process?

Adjudication is a NIGHTMARE right now!!! My claim has been stuck for 9 WEEKS with zero communication from ESD. I've called literally 200+ times and either get disconnected or told to wait for an adjudicator to contact me. Meanwhile bills are piling up and my landlord is threatening eviction. The whole system is broken!!

That's awful! Have you tried contacting your state representative? I was stuck in adjudication for 5 weeks and reached out to my district rep. Their office contacted ESD on my behalf and my claim was approved within 3 days after that. Worth a try.

That gives me a little hope! Did you do anything special or just wait it out?

I had the same issue with adjudication for a job separation when my company downsized. I finally got through to ESD after using Claimyr (claimyr.com) - it actually worked and got me connected to an agent in about 20 minutes when I'd been trying for weeks on my own. The agent was able to see my case and told me exactly what was causing the delay. You can see how it works in their video demo: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. It was honestly worth it just to get some clarity about my situation.

Did the agent actually help speed up your adjudication or just give you information? I'm wondering if it's worth trying this service or if they'll just tell me to keep waiting anyway.

They were able to escalate my case because they found an error in how it was categorized. Can't promise the same would happen for you, but at least I got actual information instead of the automated messages. Got approved about a week later.

Adjudication timeframes are currently extending beyond the standard 1-2 weeks due to high claim volume. The 6+ week estimate you heard is unfortunately accurate for many cases right now. Here's what you can do while waiting: 1. Continue filing weekly claims without fail 2. Make sure your contact information is updated in your eServices account 3. Respond immediately to any requests for information 4. Look into hardship resources - WorkSource offices can connect you with emergency rent assistance 5. If you receive a call from an adjudicator, answer even if it's an unknown number Also, check if your claim has any alerts or action items in eServices that might be causing delays. Sometimes a simple missing document can hold up the entire process.

Thank you for this detailed reply. I double-checked and there are no alerts showing on my account. I'll definitely look into the emergency rent assistance - do you know if accepting that would affect my unemployment eligibility at all?

Emergency rent assistance won't affect your unemployment eligibility. It's considered crisis assistance, not income. Just make sure you're meeting the job search requirements (3 activities per week) while waiting for adjudication to be completed.

My adjudication took about 5 weeks in February 2025. The most frustrating part was the complete lack of communication - I had no idea if they needed more information from me or if I just needed to wait. What finally worked was contacting my state representative who reached out to ESD on my behalf. After that, things moved quickly. If you've been waiting more than 4 weeks, I'd definitely recommend reaching out to your district's representative.

That's a good idea, I hadn't thought of contacting my state rep. Do you just call their office or is there a specific way to request help with ESD issues?

I just called my representative's office and explained my situation. They had me fill out a form authorizing them to inquire about my case. The whole process was pretty simple, and they seemed very familiar with helping constituents with ESD problems.

Did u upload all ur documents? My friend was stuck in adjudcation for like 2 months and turns out they needed his ID verification but never told him!!! check ur messages in eservices and make sure theres nothing they need from u

I've triple-checked and there are no pending tasks or messages requesting documents. My ID verification shows as complete too. It's like my claim is just sitting there being ignored.

One thing that might help - on your weekly claims, be extra careful about how you answer the job separation question. If your answers don't match what your employer reported, it can extend adjudication. Make sure you're consistently reporting it as a layoff due to business closure rather than using terms like 'fired' or 'let go' which might trigger additional review.

Thanks for this tip! I've definitely been consistent about reporting it as a layoff due to the restaurant closing. The frustrating part is that my employer actually confirmed this - I'm still in touch with the owner and he said he told ESD the same thing when they contacted him.

Does anyone know if they're actually working through these in order? Like do they take the oldest cases first? I'm wondering if calling repeatedly actually helps or if we're all just in a giant queue that moves at a snail's pace no matter what we do.

ESD does generally work claims in order, but certain issues receive priority. Claims are sorted based on several factors: issue type, hardship level, and claim age. Repeatedly calling doesn't typically change your position in the adjudication queue, but it can sometimes identify if there's a specific issue delaying your claim that could be resolved more quickly.
