ESD account hacked - stuck in SAW security nightmare & can't get benefits

I'm literally at my wit's end dealing with this SAW security nightmare. Someone hacked my SecureAccess Washington account last week and changed all my contact info. I discovered it when I stopped getting ESD emails and couldn't log in anymore. I've called the SAW help desk 3 times (waited almost 2 hours each time!) and they keep 'resetting' things, but then the hacker just changes it all again before I can even update my security settings! Meanwhile, my weekly unemployment payments have stopped completely - I can see in my ESD account that my last payment is 'pending identity verification' but I can't get through to anyone who can actually help. Has anyone dealt with this? I'm about to get evicted if I can't get this fixed and get my benefits released.

This EXACT thing happened to me in January! The SAW help desk is useless - they don't communicate with ESD so fixing your SAW account doesn't automatically fix your unemployment payments. You need to call ESD directly and tell them you need a 'fraud hold removal' AND 'identity verification acceleration.' It's basically impossible to get through on their main line though.

Thanks for responding! Did you eventually get it resolved? I keep calling the ESD number but it just says 'high call volume' and hangs up on me after 30 minutes of waiting. Did you find any better way to reach them?

I help people with this issue quite frequently. Here's what you need to do: 1) First, contact SAW security again, but specifically request a "security escalation" and ask them to place a permanent security block requiring an additional verification step before ANY changes can be made to your account 2) File an identity theft report with the FTC at identitytheft.gov and take screenshots 3) Submit these documents through your ESD account's secure message center (if you can access it) 4) Call ESD directly about the identity verification hold - this is separate from the SAW security issue The key is getting through to an actual ESD agent who can verify your identity and remove the payment hold. Most people don't realize these are two separate systems with different security teams.

Thank you so much for these steps! I'll request that security escalation tomorrow morning. The problem is I've been trying for days to reach ESD directly about the payment hold but can never get through. It's maddening!

I understand completely. The phone system is overwhelmed, especially with the recent increase in fraud attempts. One option many people have found helpful is using Claimyr (claimyr.com) - it's a service that basically calls ESD for you and then connects you once they get through. They have a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. Much faster than spending days trying to get through on your own.

omg this is scary! makes me wanna check my account RIGHT NOW. did u change ur passwords for all ur other accounts too? they might have access to ur email if they keep gettin back in?

Yes!!! I changed ALL my passwords and even got a new email address. But they somehow keep getting back into the SAW account. It's terrifying - I'm worried about what other accounts they might try to access.

The same thing happened to me and it took 6 WEEKS to fix!!!! The problem is that once someone puts a fraud hold on your account, ESD treats YOU like the criminal! I had to upload my ID, birth certificate, AND utility bills FOUR DIFFERENT TIMES because they kept saying they "couldn't verify my identity" even though I've been on unemployment for months with no problems! The whole system is DESIGNED TO FAIL so they don't have to pay us!

SIX WEEKS?? I can't wait that long! Did calling help at all or was it all through the document upload system?

Calling helped ONCE I finally got through to a tier 3 specialist (not the regular agents). Regular agents kept telling me "it's processing" which was a LIE. The document system is useless - they never even LOOK at what you upload.

I work in cybersecurity (not for ESD) and can share some insight on what's happening. There's been a significant increase in unemployment fraud specifically targeting SAW accounts recently. The hackers are likely using credential stuffing attacks where they try passwords leaked from other breaches. A technical tip: when you do regain control of your SAW account, immediately enable multi-factor authentication. Also, create a completely unique password you've never used elsewhere and use a password manager like LastPass or 1Password to store it. For ESD contact, try calling right when they open at 8:00am. The queue fills within minutes.

Thank you for explaining! I've been wondering how they got in. I'll definitely set up that multi-factor authentication once I get back in. I'll try the 8am call tomorrow - do you know if there are specific days that are better for calling?

In my experience, Tuesdays and Wednesdays tend to have slightly lower call volumes than Mondays or Fridays. But it's still extremely difficult. If you have any documentation proving your identity (driver's license, passport, utility bills showing your address), have those ready when you call.

I haven't tried that! Is it an official ESD Facebook group or just a community one? I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point.

When I had my SAW account compromised last year, I actually went in person to a WorkSource office. While they can't directly fix ESD issues, they did help me contact someone who could escalate my case. Bring multiple forms of ID if you go this route.

That's actually a really good idea. There's a WorkSource office about 30 minutes from me. Did you just walk in or make an appointment first?

I made an appointment through their website first, which was good because when I got there it was packed. Just make sure to tell them specifically it's about an identity theft/fraud situation with your ESD account, not just general unemployment questions.

After seeing all these replies, I wanted to share what finally worked for me. I used Claimyr to get through to ESD after wasting days trying to call myself. It costs money but was worth it - I got through in like 30 minutes instead of days of calling. Once I finally talked to an actual person at ESD, they cleared the fraud hold in minutes. Still took about 5 days for the payment to process though.

Thank you! Several people have mentioned Claimyr now. At this point the cost doesn't even matter if it actually works. I need my benefits ASAP or I'll lose my apartment.

UPDATE: I wanted to share what's working for me so far. I followed the security escalation advice with SAW and they put a special block on my account. Then I used Claimyr this morning to get through to ESD (it actually worked!) and got connected with an agent who specializes in fraud cases. She verified my identity over the phone and is expediting my case. Said payments should resume in 3-5 business days if everything checks out. THANK YOU everyone for your help - this community literally saved me from eviction!
