Does unemployment pay weekly biweekly in Washington - confused about payment schedule
I'm really confused about when Washington ESD actually sends out unemployment payments. I know you have to file your weekly claim every week, but does that mean they pay you every week or do they batch it up and pay biweekly? I've been approved for $485/week but I can't figure out if I should expect money every Tuesday or every other Tuesday. The website isn't clear about this and I need to plan my budget. Anyone know for sure how often Washington ESD actually deposits the money?

Washington ESD pays weekly, not biweekly. You file your weekly claim and if everything processes correctly, you should get paid within 2-3 business days after filing. Most people see their deposit on Tuesday or Wednesday if they filed on Sunday/Monday.

•That's a relief! I was worried I'd have to wait two weeks between payments. So if I file every Sunday I should see money by Wednesday?

•Exactly. As long as there are no issues with your claim, it's a weekly cycle. File Sunday, get paid by Wednesday typically.

Yeah it's weekly but sometimes there are delays. I've had weeks where it took 5 days instead of 2-3. The payment schedule can get messed up if there's a holiday or if Washington ESD is having system issues.

•Good to know about the delays. I guess I should plan for the worst case scenario timing wise.

•Holidays definitely mess things up. Memorial Day week took forever to get my payment last year.

I had so much trouble getting through to Washington ESD to ask about payment timing when I first started my claim. Spent hours on hold just to confirm this basic info. Eventually found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an actual agent - they have a demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. Way easier than sitting on hold for 3 hours.

•Never heard of that service but the phone situation with Washington ESD is terrible. How does it work exactly?

•You put in your info on claimyr.com and they call you back when they get through to Washington ESD. Saves you from having to sit there hitting redial all day.

•Interesting, might have to try that next time I need to call them about something.

•You're thinking of something else. Washington ESD is weekly claims and weekly payments. Some other states might do biweekly but Washington is definitely weekly.

•oh ok that makes sense. i was reading about other states online and got mixed up

The weekly payment thing is one of the better parts of Washington's system compared to other states. Some states make you wait 2-3 weeks between payments which would be brutal for budgeting.

•Yeah I'm glad it's weekly. I don't know how I'd manage bills if I had to wait two weeks between payments.

•Definitely. Weekly is way more manageable when you're trying to keep up with rent and utilities.

Just make sure you file your weekly claim on time every week. If you miss the deadline they won't pay you for that week even if you file late. I learned that the hard way.

Mateo Hernandez
•What's the deadline? I thought you had until the end of the week?

•You have to file by the Saturday of the week you're claiming for. So if you're claiming for the week ending January 11th, you need to file by January 11th.

•Actually you get a little more time than that. You can file up until the following Saturday in most cases, but it's best to file as soon as possible after the week ends.

I've been getting paid weekly for 6 months now and it's pretty consistent. Usually file on Sunday morning and see the deposit Wednesday. Only had a couple delays when there were system maintenance issues.

•That's reassuring to hear from someone with longer experience. Thanks for sharing your timeline.

•Same experience here. Sunday filing, Wednesday deposit has been my routine for months.

The payment timing can vary based on your bank too. Some banks process ACH deposits faster than others. I get mine Tuesday afternoon but my friend with a different bank doesn't see hers until Thursday sometimes.

•Good point about banks. I have a credit union so hopefully they're quick about processing it.

•Credit unions are usually pretty fast with ACH deposits in my experience.

Just FYI the weekly claim filing opens up Sunday morning around 6am. You don't have to wait until Monday or anything. I always file mine early Sunday so I don't forget.

•That's helpful! I'll set a reminder for Sunday mornings to file my claim.

•Yeah I do the same thing. Sunday morning coffee and weekly claim filing has become my routine.

Make sure you keep track of all your job search activities too. You need to do at least 3 job search activities per week to qualify for payments. I use a simple spreadsheet to track everything.

Mateo Hernandez
•I was wondering about that requirement. What counts as a job search activity?

NebulaNinja
•Applying for jobs, attending job fairs, networking events, informational interviews. Washington ESD has a list on their website of what qualifies.

•You can also register with WorkSource for additional activities. That helps fill out your weekly requirement.

The weekly payment schedule is definitely better than biweekly but man the whole system is still a pain to deal with. Every time I have a question about my claim I have to spend half the day trying to get through to someone.

•Tell me about it. I tried calling 47 times last week before I got through to anyone.

•That's exactly why I started using Claimyr. So much easier than the phone marathon. They handle all the calling and just connect you when they get through.

•I might have to look into that service. The calling situation is absolutely ridiculous.

Has anyone had issues with payments being delayed because of identity verification? I've been waiting 3 weeks for my ID to be verified and haven't gotten any payments yet even though my claim was approved.

CosmicCruiser
•Identity verification can definitely delay payments. That's separate from the normal weekly payment schedule. You won't get any payments until the ID verification is complete.

•Ugh, that's what I was afraid of. The waiting is killing me financially.

•I went through ID verification last year and it took about a month. But once it's done you get all the back payments in one lump sum.

For budgeting purposes, I always assume my payment will come Wednesday and if it comes earlier that's a bonus. That way I'm not stressed if there's a small delay.

Mateo Hernandez
•That's smart planning. I'll use Wednesday as my expected date and hope for Tuesday.

•Same strategy here. Wednesday is my budget day even if the money usually shows up Tuesday.

The weekly payments definitely help with cash flow compared to biweekly. I was on unemployment in another state before and the biweekly payments were brutal for keeping up with bills.

•I can't imagine waiting two weeks between payments when you're already financially stressed.

•Yeah Washington's system has its problems but the weekly payments are definitely a good feature.

Don't forget you can set up direct deposit if you haven't already. It's way faster than waiting for a check in the mail. Takes about 2 weeks to set up but then payments are automatic.

Mateo Hernandez
•Already set up direct deposit when I filed my initial claim. Glad I did based on what you're saying about the timing.

I had a weird situation where my first payment took 10 days because of some processing issue, but after that it's been regular weekly payments. So don't panic if your first one takes longer than expected.

•Same thing happened to me. First payment was delayed but then everything normalized to the weekly schedule.

The key is just staying consistent with filing your weekly claims. As long as you file on time every week and meet the job search requirements, the payments should be regular and weekly.
0 coins
Mateo Hernandez
•Got it. File weekly, get paid weekly, as long as I stay on top of everything.

Paolo Ricci
•Exactly. It becomes routine after a few weeks.

One more tip - if you ever have payment issues, calling first thing Monday morning around 8am gives you the best chance of getting through to Washington ESD. That's when they have the most agents available.

Mateo Hernandez
•Good to know! I'll remember that if I run into any problems.

Oliver Zimmermann
•Or use that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Way less frustrating than trying to time your calls perfectly.

•True, that's probably easier than playing the timing game with the phone lines.

Hope this thread helped clear up the confusion! Washington ESD definitely pays weekly, not biweekly. Just stay consistent with your weekly claim filing and you should see regular deposits.
