What day does unemployment get paid in Washington ESD?
I just got approved for unemployment benefits and I'm trying to figure out when I'll actually receive my payments. I filed my first weekly claim on Sunday but I have no idea what day of the week Washington ESD actually deposits the money. Is it the same day every week or does it vary? I need to plan my budget around this.

It depends on your last name and when you file your weekly claim. Washington ESD processes payments on different days throughout the week. If you file on Sunday, you'll typically get paid by Wednesday or Thursday.

•My last name starts with M, does that matter for the payment schedule?

•Not really for the payment day, but it affects when your claim week starts. The actual deposit day is more about when you submit your weekly claim.

Usually Tuesday or Wednesday for me. I always file my weekly claim on Sunday morning and the money hits my account by Wednesday most weeks.

•Same here, Wednesday is pretty consistent if you file on Sunday.

•That's good to know, I was worried it might take longer than that.

I had so much trouble getting through to Washington ESD to ask about payment timing. Spent hours on hold trying to reach someone. Finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me connected to an agent in like 10 minutes. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. The agent explained the whole payment schedule to me.

•How does that work? Do they just call for you or something?

CosmicCadet
•Yeah they handle the calling and waiting, then connect you when an agent picks up. Saved me tons of time.

•That sounds really helpful, I might try that if I have other questions come up.

BE CAREFUL ABOUT WHEN YOU FILE!!! If you file late in the week your payment gets delayed. I made that mistake once and had to wait an extra week to get paid. Always file as early as possible on Sunday.

•What happens if you file on like Wednesday instead of Sunday?

Amara Adeyemi
•Your payment gets pushed to the next processing cycle, so instead of getting paid that week you have to wait until the following week.

For regular UI benefits in Washington, payments are processed Monday through Friday. Most people who file their weekly claim on Sunday will see the deposit by Wednesday. If you're on standby status or have any holds on your claim, it might take longer.

•What's standby status? I keep seeing that term but don't understand it.

•Standby is when you're temporarily laid off but expect to return to work within a specific timeframe. Different rules apply for job search requirements.

•I'm on regular UI, so sounds like Wednesday should be my payment day.

Just to clarify the timeline: You file your weekly claim on Sunday for the previous week. Washington ESD processes the claim Monday/Tuesday. Payment is issued Tuesday/Wednesday. Direct deposit hits your account Wednesday/Thursday depending on your bank.

•Some banks are faster than others too. Credit unions usually process faster than big banks in my experience.

I've been getting unemployment for 3 months now and Wednesday is definitely the most common day. Sometimes Tuesday if I file really early Sunday morning.

•What time do you usually file on Sunday?

•Like 6 AM right when I wake up. The system is usually less busy then too.

Washington ESD is so inconsistent with everything else but the payment schedule is pretty reliable. Wednesday is your best bet for planning purposes.

Check your bank's deposit schedule too. Some banks don't process ACH deposits on certain days. My bank doesn't process on Tuesdays so even if Washington ESD sends it Tuesday, I don't see it until Wednesday.

•I have Chase, do you know if they have any weird deposit rules?

Dmitry Popov
•Chase is usually pretty standard, you should see it the same day Washington ESD processes it.

If your claim is in adjudication you won't get paid until that's resolved, regardless of the day. Found that out the hard way when I had to wait 3 weeks for them to verify my employment history.

Andre Moreau
•How do you know if your claim is in adjudication?

Ava Rodriguez
•It will show on your claim status in the Washington ESD website. It'll say something like 'pending adjudication' or 'under review'.

Wednesday gang checking in! Been consistent for me for 6 months now. File Sunday morning, get paid Wednesday afternoon.

Just wanted to follow up on the Claimyr thing - they were super helpful when I had questions about my payment schedule and other stuff. Much easier than trying to call Washington ESD directly.

•How much does something like that cost?

•Honestly don't remember the exact cost but it was worth it to actually talk to someone instead of being on hold forever.

Pro tip: set up account alerts with your bank so you get notified when the deposit hits. Takes the guesswork out of when your payment arrives.

Andre Moreau
•That's a great idea, I'll set that up right now.

Anyone else notice that the deposit time seems to vary by a few hours? Sometimes I get it at 2 AM Wednesday, sometimes not until 3 PM. Same day but different times.

•Banks process overnight deposits at different times, that's probably why

Just remember that your first payment might take an extra day or two since they have to set up the direct deposit. After that it should be regular.

The Washington ESD payment calendar is available on their website if you want to see the exact dates. It shows when payments are processed each week.

Bottom line: File your weekly claim on Sunday, expect payment by Wednesday. If you don't get it by Thursday, then start worrying and check your claim status.

Also worth mentioning - if you have any issues with your payment not showing up, that's when services like Claimyr become really valuable. They can help you get through to Washington ESD to figure out what's wrong.
