What day does unemployment pay in Washington state?
I just got approved for unemployment benefits and I'm trying to figure out when I'll actually receive my payments. I filed my first weekly claim on Sunday but I have no idea what day Washington ESD actually sends out the money. Does anyone know what day of the week unemployment payments come through? I need to plan my bills around this.

Washington ESD typically processes payments on Tuesday nights after you file your weekly claim. So if you file on Sunday, you should see the money in your account by Wednesday morning if you have direct deposit set up.

•Thank you! I do have direct deposit so hopefully I'll see it Wednesday. Do you know if holidays affect this timing?

Abigail bergen
•Yes, holidays can delay it by a day or two. Bank holidays especially mess with the timing.

•Which bank do you use? I have Chase and wondering if they're typically fast or slow.

Washington ESD typically processes payments on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. If you filed your weekly claim on Tuesday, you should see the deposit by Wednesday or Thursday depending on your bank. Direct deposit is usually faster than the debit card option.

•Thanks! So it's pretty quick then. I was worried it might take a week or something.

•yeah mine always comes wednesday morning around 6am, been on unemployment for 3 months now

The payment schedule depends on when you file your weekly claim. Washington ESD processes claims Monday through Friday, but most people file on Sunday or Monday. If you file early in the week (Sunday-Tuesday), you'll typically get paid by Wednesday. Later in the week might push it to Thursday or Friday.

•That makes sense. I'll try to file earlier in the week going forward.

•I always file my weekly claim on Sunday night and get paid Wednesday morning like clockwork. Been doing this routine for months.

The official Washington ESD payment schedule is that benefits are processed Tuesday evening after your weekly claim is filed and approved. Most people with direct deposit see the funds Wednesday morning, but it can vary by bank. If you're getting a debit card, it usually takes an extra day.

•I chose direct deposit during my application so I should be good. How long did it take you to get your first payment?

•My first payment took about 3 weeks because of adjudication issues, but once that was resolved, the weekly payments have been very consistent on Wednesdays.

•3 weeks for adjudication? That's actually pretty fast these days. Mine took 6 weeks!

I've been getting my Washington ESD payments for 8 months now and it's always Wednesday morning around 6am. Very reliable once you get into the rhythm. Make sure you file your weekly claim every Sunday though - if you miss it you have to wait until the next week.

•Good to know about the Sunday deadline. What happens if you file late in the week?

Toot-n-Mighty
•You can file late but you won't get paid until the following week's cycle. So if you file on Thursday, you'd get paid the Wednesday after that.

One thing to watch out for - if there are any issues with your claim or if Washington ESD needs additional verification, it can delay the payment. I had to wait an extra week once because they needed to verify my job search activities.

Andre Moreau
•Oh no, what kind of verification did they need? I've been applying to jobs and keeping track like they said.

Liam O'Connor
•They randomly audit job search logs sometimes. Just make sure you're keeping detailed records of where you applied and when. I use a spreadsheet to track everything.

•This is why I use Claimyr when I need to talk to someone at Washington ESD about my claim status. Way easier than trying to call them directly. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check on your payment status, I found this service called Claimyr that helps you actually reach an agent. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Really helped me when my payments got stuck.

•Interesting, I'll check that out if I run into issues. How much does it cost?

•They focus on just getting you connected to an actual person at Washington ESD rather than waiting on hold forever. Much better than spending hours trying to call.

I've been getting my payments on Wednesdays consistently. Filed my weekly claim every Sunday since I started in October. Only had one delay when there was a holiday.

•Good to know about holidays affecting it. I didn't think about that.

MAKE SURE YOU KEEP FILING EVERY WEEK even if you haven't gotten your first payment yet! I made the mistake of stopping when my claim was in adjudication and had to restart everything. Washington ESD doesn't backpay for weeks you don't file.

Kirsuktow DarkBlade
•Oh wow, I didn't know that. So even if I'm waiting for approval I should keep filing weekly claims?
0 coins
Tyrone Hill
•YES! Keep filing every single week. They'll pay you retroactively for the weeks you filed once your claim is approved.
0 coins
Abigail bergen
•This is correct. Never stop filing your weekly claims even during adjudication or appeals.

Does anyone know if the payment time is different for standby unemployment? I'm on temporary layoff and expecting to go back to work soon.

•Standby claims follow the same payment schedule as regular UI claims. The main difference is you don't have to do job search activities while on standby status.

MAKE SURE YOU FILE YOUR WEEKLY CLAIMS ON TIME! I missed a week once and it was a nightmare trying to get it sorted out. Washington ESD is super strict about the deadlines.

Andre Moreau
•What happens if you miss the deadline? Can you still file late?

Dylan Wright
•You can file late but you have to explain why and they might not pay you for that week. It's not worth the risk - just set a reminder on your phone.

•I had to call Washington ESD when I missed a week due to being in the hospital. Took forever to get through until someone told me about Claimyr. That service actually got me connected to an agent who helped me file the late claim and get it approved.

The Washington ESD website shows payment dates if you log into your account. It's under the payment history section. Shows when they processed it and when it should hit your account.

Been on unemployment twice in the past 5 years due to layoffs in construction. Payment timing is usually consistent but can vary by a day or two depending on your bank. My credit union processes deposits faster than the big banks.
0 coins
Andre Moreau
•I use a small local bank so hopefully that helps with faster processing.

•Local banks and credit unions are usually quicker with ACH deposits. The big national banks sometimes hold them longer.

One thing to watch out for - if your weekly claim gets flagged for any reason, your payment will be delayed until they review it. This happened to me when I reported some odd job income and they had to verify it.
0 coins
Kirsuktow DarkBlade
•How long did that delay take? I haven't worked any odd jobs but good to know.

Sofía Rodríguez
•It took about 10 days for them to review and approve the payment. Just be super accurate when reporting any income.

don't forget you have to report any work you do even if its just a few hours. learned that the hard way when i did some side work and didn't report it

Andre Moreau
•Good reminder. I was thinking about doing some gig work but wasn't sure how that affects benefits.
0 coins

•Any work has to be reported on your weekly claim. They'll reduce your benefits accordingly but you might still get a partial payment depending on how much you earned.

The Tuesday night processing is correct but I've noticed if there's high volume or system issues, it can get pushed to Wednesday night processing instead. Doesn't happen often but it has happened.
0 coins
Kirsuktow DarkBlade
•So in that case would payments show up Thursday instead of Wednesday?

Aiden O'Connor
•Exactly. It's rare but during busy periods like mass layoffs it can happen.

What about if you're in adjudication? I've been waiting 3 weeks for them to make a decision on my claim and haven't received any payments yet.

•If you're in adjudication, payments are held until they make a decision. Once approved, you should get back pay for all the weeks you filed claims during the adjudication period.

•That's what I was hoping. The waiting is killing me financially though.

•I was in adjudication for 4 weeks last year. Used Claimyr to finally get through to someone who could explain what was holding up my claim. Turned out they just needed one more piece of documentation. Got approved the next week after I faxed it in.

I get my payments on the ReliaCard if I don't have direct deposit set up. Usually available by Wednesday afternoon. The card is free and you can transfer money to your bank account or use it like a debit card.

Just remember that if you start working again, even part time, you need to report it immediately. Washington ESD is pretty good about catching unreported income and you don't want to deal with an overpayment situation.

Just a heads up - if you're doing gig work or have any 1099 income while on unemployment, make sure you report it correctly on your weekly claim. Even small amounts can trigger a review that delays your payment.

Just wanted to add my experience as someone who's been on Washington unemployment for about 6 months now. The Tuesday night processing/Wednesday morning deposit schedule is spot on. I file every Sunday night around 8pm and my payment hits my account like clockwork Wednesday morning around 6am. One thing I learned the hard way though - if you have any issues with your weekly claim (like forgetting to answer a question completely or having technical problems submitting), it can delay your payment by several days while they sort it out. So double-check everything before you submit your weekly claim!

Daniel Price
•Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful about double-checking everything before submitting. I'm still pretty new to this whole process so I'll make sure to be extra careful when filling out my weekly claims. It's reassuring to hear that the timing is so consistent once you get into the routine. Do you have any other tips for avoiding claim issues?
