Do you lose Washington ESD unemployment benefits if you get a job?

I've been collecting UI benefits for about 6 weeks now and I might have a job opportunity coming up. I'm worried about what happens to my unemployment if I accept it. Do I immediately lose all my benefits? What if the job doesn't work out after a few weeks? I don't want to mess up my claim by doing something wrong. Has anyone dealt with this situation before?

You don't automatically lose everything, but you do need to report any work immediately on your weekly claim. If you're working full-time, you'll stop receiving benefits. Part-time work gets deducted from your weekly benefit amount.

0 coins

What counts as full-time? Is it 40 hours or something else?

0 coins

For Washington ESD, it's generally if you earn more than your weekly benefit amount plus $5. So if your weekly benefit is $400, earning over $405 would stop your benefits for that week.

0 coins

ALWAYS report work on your weekly claim even if it's just one day. Washington ESD will find out eventually and you could get hit with an overpayment if you don't report it upfront.

0 coins

This is so important! I got an overpayment notice last year because I forgot to report some temporary work.

0 coins

How do they find out about unreported work? Do they check with employers?

0 coins

They cross-reference with wage records from employers. It might take months but they'll catch it.

0 coins

If you take a job and it doesn't work out, you can reopen your claim. You don't have to start completely over. Just make sure you report the separation reason honestly - whether you quit or were laid off affects your eligibility.

0 coins

That's reassuring! I was worried I'd lose everything and have to reapply from scratch.

0 coins

Yeah but there's usually a waiting period if you voluntarily quit without good cause. Make sure you understand the separation rules before taking any job you're not sure about.

0 coins

Exactly. Good cause includes things like unsafe working conditions, harassment, or significant changes to your job duties or pay.

I had trouble getting through to Washington ESD when I needed to report a job change. Spent hours on hold just to get disconnected. Finally used Claimyr.com to get connected to an agent - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Way better than sitting on hold all day.

0 coins

Never heard of that service. Is it legit? I hate calling Washington ESD because I can never get through.

0 coins

Yeah it's legitimate. They basically handle the calling and waiting for you, then connect you when an agent is available. Saved me so much frustration.

0 coins

I'm always skeptical of third-party services but honestly the Washington ESD phone system is such a nightmare that I'd consider it.

0 coins

What if you're doing gig work like DoorDash or Uber? Do you have to report every single delivery?

0 coins

You report your total earnings for the week, not individual gigs. But yes, all gig work income needs to be reported.

0 coins

That makes sense. I was worried I'd have to list every single ride or delivery.

0 coins

Be careful about the job search requirements too. If you're getting close to finding work, you still need to keep doing your job searches and reporting them until you actually start working full-time.

0 coins

Good point. I've been keeping track of my job searches but wasn't sure if I needed to keep doing them if I had a job lined up.

0 coins

Yeah you need to maintain the job search activities until you're actually employed. Washington ESD can audit your job search log anytime.

0 coins

i took a temp job last month and it screwed up my whole claim. couldnt get anyone at esd to explain what happened

0 coins

What kind of issues are you having? Temp work should be reported just like any other employment.

0 coins

they said i have some kind of eligibility issue now and my payments stopped. been trying to call for weeks

0 coins

This is exactly why I used Claimyr when I had issues. The regular phone lines are impossible.

0 coins

The system is so confusing. Why can't they just have clear guidelines posted online about what happens when you get a job?

0 coins

They do have information on the Washington ESD website, but it's buried in different sections. The handbook explains most of these scenarios.

0 coins

I looked at the handbook but it's like reading legal documents. Just want straight answers.

0 coins

Pro tip: keep detailed records of everything when you start working. Hours worked, gross pay, dates - everything. Makes reporting on your weekly claim much easier and protects you if there are any questions later.

0 coins

Good advice. I'll start a spreadsheet to track everything.

0 coins

I use a simple notebook. Write down every day I work and how much I earned. Saved me when they questioned my reported earnings.

0 coins

What about benefits like health insurance? Do you lose those immediately too?

0 coins

You're thinking of different programs. Regular unemployment benefits are just the weekly cash payments. If you had health coverage through Washington Apple Health or other programs, those have different rules.

0 coins

Oh okay, I was getting confused between different benefit programs.

0 coins

Been on unemployment for 4 months and finally got a job offer. Nervous about reporting it wrong and messing things up. The amount of paperwork and rules is overwhelming.

0 coins

Just be honest and report exactly what you earn when you earn it. The system is designed to handle people transitioning back to work.

0 coins

Thanks, that's reassuring. I guess I'm overthinking it.

0 coins

My cousin said if you quit a job after less than 30 days you can just pretend it never happened. That doesn't sound right to me.

0 coins

Your cousin is wrong and that's fraud. You have to report ALL work regardless of how long it lasts.

0 coins

Yeah I figured that was bad advice. Better to be safe and report everything.

0 coins

Exactly. Washington ESD has access to employment records and will eventually catch unreported work. The penalties aren't worth it.

0 coins

Does anyone know if you can collect unemployment while working a very part-time job? Like 10 hours a week?

0 coins

Yes, you can collect partial benefits. They'll reduce your weekly benefit amount by what you earn minus $5. So if you earn $100, they subtract $95 from your regular benefit amount.

0 coins

That's actually not too bad. I was worried any work would completely stop my benefits.

0 coins

The key thing is staying eligible. You still need to be able and available for full-time work even if you're doing part-time work. Can't turn down suitable job offers just because you want to keep collecting benefits.

0 coins

What defines a 'suitable' job offer? Does it have to be in my field?

0 coins

Generally it means work that matches your skills and pays reasonably compared to your previous job. The longer you're unemployed, the broader the definition gets.

0 coins

I've been doing freelance work while collecting benefits. Make sure to report all income even if it's irregular. Some weeks I make nothing, other weeks I might make $300.

0 coins

How do you handle the irregular income? Do you report it the week you earn it or when you get paid?

0 coins

I report it the week I actually perform the work, not when I get paid. That's what Washington ESD told me when I called to ask.

0 coins

This whole thread is making me realize I need to call Washington ESD before I accept this job offer. Want to make sure I understand the rules correctly.

0 coins

Good luck getting through on the phone. I'd suggest trying Claimyr if you get stuck - much easier than spending all day calling.

0 coins

Yeah I'm already dreading the phone calls. Might check out that service you mentioned.

0 coins

remember you can always reopen your claim if the job doesnt work out. happened to me twice during the pandemic. just have to report why you left the job

0 coins

That's good to know. Takes some of the pressure off accepting a job that might not be perfect.

0 coins

Just make sure you have good cause if you quit. Being laid off is obviously fine, but quitting without good reason can disqualify you.

0 coins

The most important thing is to report work immediately. I made the mistake of waiting until my next weekly claim and it flagged my account for review. Took weeks to sort out.

0 coins

How do you report work immediately? Do you have to call or is there an online option?

0 coins

You report it on your weekly claim filing. Just don't wait - file as soon as your week ends and include any work you did that week.

0 coins

Bottom line is Washington ESD wants you to get back to work. The system is designed to support the transition, not penalize you for finding employment. Just be honest about everything.

0 coins

Thanks everyone for all the advice. Feeling much more confident about accepting this job offer now.

0 coins

Good luck with the new job! Hope it works out well for you.

Thank you! This thread has been incredibly helpful.
