Do you get drug tested for Washington ESD unemployment benefits?
I'm about to file for unemployment through Washington ESD and I'm wondering if they require drug testing as part of the process? I haven't been able to find clear information about this on their website. Does anyone know if Washington state requires drug tests for UI benefits? I'm clean but just want to know what to expect when I submit my application.

No, Washington ESD does not require drug testing for regular unemployment insurance benefits. You won't need to take any kind of drug test just to file your claim or receive weekly payments. The main requirements are that you're able and available for work and actively seeking employment.

•Thanks! That's a relief. I was worried there might be some screening process I didn't know about.

Drug testing isn't part of Washington's UI program at all. However, if you're referred to certain job training programs through WorkSource or if you're applying for specific jobs that require testing, that's a different story. But for just collecting unemployment? No testing required.

•Good point about job training programs - some of those do have different requirements depending on the industry.

•That makes sense. I'm just looking for regular benefits while I job search, not any special programs.

I've been collecting Washington ESD benefits for 8 weeks now and never had to do any drug testing. The only 'testing' they do is verifying your work history and making sure you meet the eligibility requirements. You'll need to do your weekly claims and job search activities but no physical testing of any kind.

•How many job contacts do you have to do per week? I keep seeing different numbers online.

•It's 3 job search activities per week minimum. Can be applications, interviews, networking events, etc. You have to log them in your WorkSourceWA account.

•Thanks for that info! I'll make sure to set up my WorkSource account once I get my claim approved.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to ask questions like this, I found this service called Claimyr that helps you actually reach an agent on the phone. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Really helped me when I was stuck in adjudication and couldn't get anyone on the phone.

•Interesting, I'll check that out if I run into issues getting through to them. Good to know there are options.

•How much does something like that cost? Seems like it could be useful but I'm already tight on money.

•It's worth checking out their site for details, but honestly when you're stuck waiting weeks for adjudication or need claim issues resolved, it's a lifesaver to actually talk to someone.

never heard of drug testing for unemployment in washington, been through the system twice and never came up. they're more concerned with whether you're actually looking for work and reporting your job search correctly

•Good to know from someone with experience! Sounds like I was worrying about nothing.

•Some states do drug testing for certain benefits but Washington isn't one of them for UI.

The only time drug testing might come up is if you're disqualified for being fired due to substance abuse or something like that. But even then, Washington ESD doesn't require you to take a test - they just look at the reason for separation from your employer. Regular UI claims don't involve any testing.

•Makes sense. I was laid off due to company downsizing so that shouldn't be an issue for me.

•Yeah if you were laid off through no fault of your own, you should be fine. Just make sure to file your weekly claims on time.

•Exactly, and make sure you're documenting your job search activities properly in WorkSource.

I work in HR and deal with unemployment claims regularly. Washington state does not require drug testing for UI benefits. Some states have pilot programs or specific requirements, but Washington focuses on work search requirements and eligibility verification instead.

•Thanks for the professional perspective! That's really helpful to hear from someone who deals with this stuff regularly.

•Do you know if Washington is considering adding drug testing requirements in the future?

•Not that I'm aware of. The state has been more focused on streamlining the system and improving access rather than adding barriers.

Been collecting for 6 months now (lost my job in tech layoffs) and never had to do any drug testing. The most invasive thing was having to verify my identity when I first applied, but that was just uploading documents online.

•What kind of documents did you need for identity verification? I want to make sure I have everything ready.

•Driver's license and Social Security card were the main ones. Sometimes they ask for additional proof of address but it varies by case.

My sister is a caseworker at WorkSource and she confirmed - no drug testing for regular unemployment benefits in Washington. The state tried to implement it years ago but decided against it due to cost and legal challenges.

•Interesting background info! Makes sense that the cost would be prohibitive for the state.

•Good to know they considered it but decided against it. Sounds like I don't need to worry about this at all.

Just to add another data point - I've been through the Washington ESD system three times over the past decade (construction work is cyclical) and never once had to do drug testing. The process is stressful enough without having to worry about that too!

•Construction work is rough with all the seasonal layoffs. At least the UI system works pretty well in Washington once you get used to it.

FYI if anyone is having trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone to ask questions like this, there's a service I used called Claimyr that actually gets you through to an agent. Really saved me when my claim got stuck and I couldn't get anyone on the phone for weeks. Check out claimyr.com if you need to talk to someone at Washington ESD.

•How long were you waiting before you tried that? I've been trying to call for days.

•I was calling for about 3 weeks straight getting busy signals or hung up on after waiting. Claimyr got me connected within a couple days.

•Good to know there are options if I can't get through the regular way. Hopefully I won't need it but I'll keep it in mind.

The only 'testing' Washington ESD does is testing your patience when you try to call them! But seriously, no drug testing required for UI benefits. Just focus on meeting the work search requirements and filing your weekly claims on time.

•Lol so true about testing patience! Thanks for the reassurance about no drug testing.

I was paranoid about the same thing when I first applied. Turns out I was worrying for nothing - no testing of any kind. Washington ESD is more interested in whether you're genuinely looking for work than anything else. Just make sure you understand the job search requirements and you'll be fine.

•Thanks! Sounds like I was overthinking this. I'll focus on understanding the job search requirements instead.

Can confirm - no drug testing for regular UI in Washington. Been through the system recently and the only requirements are proving you're eligible, able to work, and actively job searching. Don't stress about tests that don't exist!
