Disqualified instead of waiting week on initial ESD claim - no decision letter?
I filed my initial unemployment claim on 1/7/25 after being temporarily laid off for the winter season. But instead of showing a waiting week status like everyone else I know, my ESD account is showing 'disqualified' for that week! I'm totally confused because my HR department specifically told me I'd be eligible for unemployment during this seasonal layoff. I've received no decision letter explaining why I was disqualified, and when I check the appeals section of my account, it's completely empty. Has anyone else run into this weird situation where they got disqualified right off the bat with no explanation? Could this be a system error or did I mess something up on my application?

same thing happnd to me last month. turns out i accidentally clicked 'no' on the question about being able and available for work because i misunderstood what they were asking. check your copy of the application or call esd to see if maybe u answered something wrong

•Thanks for responding! I went back through my application and I'm 99% sure I answered everything correctly. I specifically said I was laid off (not fired), am able to work, and am available for work. Still no decision letter in my online inbox either. So frustrating!

This is a common issue with seasonal work. ESD often flags these claims for additional review because they want to verify you're truly laid off and not just temporarily not scheduled. When you're disqualified without a decision letter, it's typically because the system is still processing your claim. Here's what you should do: 1. Check if you reported your employer correctly (exact legal name) 2. Make sure you indicated it was a "lack of work/layoff" not a quit or discharge 3. Verify your employer confirmed the layoff with ESD If all those are correct, you'll need to call ESD directly. The disqualification may be overturned once they complete their review, but you should continue filing weekly claims in the meantime.

•Thank you for the detailed response! I definitely put "lack of work/layoff" on my application. I'm pretty sure I got the employer name right, but I'll double-check. Do you know if my employer is notified immediately? They literally just laid us off last Friday, so maybe they haven't confirmed it with ESD yet?

•Yes, employers are notified when a claim is filed, but they have 10 days to respond. If they haven't confirmed your layoff status yet, that could absolutely be the reason for the temporary disqualification. Keep filing your weekly claims and check your online correspondence daily. Once your employer confirms the layoff, the system should update your status automatically.

i got disqualified my first week too!! but mine was because i accidentally said i went on vacation for 2 days (i didnt realize this would affect my claim) totally stupid system if u ask me

•Ugh, that's frustrating! The questions can be so tricky. I didn't report any vacation time so that's not my issue, but I agree the system could be clearer.

The most likely issue here is that your employer hasn't responded to ESD yet to confirm your layoff status. Since you mentioned this is a seasonal/winter layoff, another possibility is that you might have been automatically placed on standby status (which is common for seasonal work), but there was an issue with how the standby was processed. You absolutely need to call ESD to get this clarified. Unfortunately, their phone lines are notoriously difficult to get through. I'd recommend trying to call right when they open at 8 AM or using Claimyr (claimyr.com) - it's a service that helps you get through to ESD without waiting on hold for hours. There's a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. I used it when I had a similar issue with my claim being incorrectly flagged. Once you get through to a rep, ask them specifically why your claim shows as disqualified and whether it's related to employer verification or standby status issues.

•Absolutely this ^^^ ESD is IMPOSSIBLE to reach these days. I spent 4 days trying to get through before I finally tried Claimyr. Got connected in about 20 minutes. They literally saved my sanity because my claim had a similar issue with disqualification that was just a stupid mistake in their system.

THE EXACT SAME THING JUST HAPPENED TO ME!!! I was also laid off for winter (construction industry) and got disqualified with no letter. I called ESD (took 3 days of trying) and they told me it was because my employer hadn't responded yet to confirm the layoff was legitimate. Once my boss confirmed, they fixed it and I got paid for that week too. Keep filing your weekly claims even though it says disqualified!!!

•Oh wow, this is super helpful! I'm also in construction! Sounds like this is probably exactly what's happening. I'll keep filing my weekly claims and try to get through to ESD. Thank you so much for sharing your experience!

•Good point! I've been checking my mailbox daily but nothing from ESD has arrived yet. I'll keep an eye out for it.

One additional thing to check - make sure you answered the "able and available" questions correctly. For seasonal work, if you indicated you're only looking for work in your specific seasonal industry, that can sometimes trigger a disqualification because ESD requires you to be available for suitable work in any industry, not just your preferred one. This is especially common in construction and hospitality seasonal layoffs.

•That's really interesting and something I hadn't considered. I think I said I was looking for any work, but now I'm second-guessing myself. I'll double-check my answers and make sure to clarify this when I speak with ESD. Thanks for pointing this out!

did u report any earnings for that week? even if u worked just one day during the week u filed that could cause problems

•I did work Monday-Wednesday that week before being laid off on Thursday. I reported those earnings accurately. Maybe that's causing the confusion? But I thought partial weeks were still eligible.

•You're correct that partial weeks are eligible, but this could absolutely be the source of the confusion. If you worked part of the week and then were laid off, the system sometimes needs manual verification. When you call ESD, specifically mention that you worked partial days during your first claim week before being laid off. They'll need to review your earnings for that week and may need to adjust your claim manually.

Has anyone else noticed that the ESD website has been acting weird lately? Sometimes statuses show up incorrectly and then fix themselves a few days later. Maybe try clearing your browser cache or using a different browser to check your claim status again?

•I hadn't thought about website glitches! I just checked on both Chrome and Edge, and both show the disqualification status. But I'll try clearing my cache to see if that helps. Thanks for the suggestion!

Based on everything you've shared, it sounds like you have multiple factors that could be causing the disqualification: seasonal work, partial week of work before layoff, and potentially a new employer who hasn't responded yet. This is exactly the kind of complicated situation where speaking directly with an ESD agent is necessary. Make sure to continue filing your weekly claims even while showing as disqualified. If your claim is eventually approved (which sounds likely based on what you've described), you'll be paid retroactively for all eligible weeks you've claimed. The important thing is maintaining an unbroken claim history while you get this sorted out.

•Thank you so much for the reassurance! I'll definitely keep filing my weekly claims. Between the partial week work and my employer possibly not responding yet, I'm feeling much better about what might be happening. I'll update the thread once I get through to ESD and find out the exact reason.
