Can you still collect unemployment benefits in Washington - eligibility questions
I'm really confused about whether I can still collect unemployment right now. I lost my job back in November and have been filing weekly claims but I keep hearing different things about changes to the system. My friend said something about new rules but I can't find clear info on the Washington ESD website. I'm worried I might be doing something wrong or missing deadlines. Has anyone else been dealing with confusion about current eligibility? I really need these benefits to keep paying rent.

Yes, you can definitely still collect regular unemployment insurance (UI) benefits in Washington. The basic program never stopped - you just need to meet the standard eligibility requirements like being able and available for work, actively seeking employment, and filing your weekly claims on time. What specific concerns do you have about your eligibility?

•I guess I'm just paranoid because I heard so many stories about people having issues. I've been filing every week and doing my job searches but sometimes the system seems glitchy.

•The regular UI program is definitely still running. Just make sure you're keeping track of your work search activities - you need to log at least 3 job search activities per week.

What changed recently was the end of the pandemic-era programs like PUA and PEUC, but regular unemployment benefits through Washington ESD continue as normal. You need to file your weekly claims every week, report any work or income, and maintain your job search requirements. Are you getting any error messages when you file?

•No error messages, just sometimes it takes forever to load. I've been doing my 3 job searches each week and reporting them.

•That's good - sounds like you're doing everything right. The website can be slow sometimes but as long as you're getting your claims through you should be fine.

I had similar worries when I was on unemployment last year. The key thing is making sure you meet the ongoing eligibility requirements - able and available for work, actively seeking employment, and filing your weekly claims. If you're doing all that and your claim is active, you should continue receiving benefits as long as you have benefit weeks remaining.

•How do I check how many weeks I have left? I can see my benefit amount but not sure about the timeline.

•Log into your account and look for your claim summary - it should show your benefit year dates and remaining balance. Regular UI is typically up to 26 weeks in Washington.

If you're having trouble getting clear answers from the Washington ESD website, you might want to try calling them directly. I know it's frustrating with the wait times, but I actually found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get through to an agent faster. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Made a huge difference when I needed to verify my claim status.

•Really? I've tried calling so many times and either get busy signals or wait forever. How does that service work exactly?

•It basically calls for you and gets you connected to an actual person at Washington ESD. Way better than sitting on hold for hours or getting disconnected.

•I've heard of services like that but wasn't sure if they were legit. Did you actually get through to someone at Washington ESD?

Just to clarify the current requirements - you need to be physically able to work, available for work, actively seeking employment (3 job search activities per week), and file your weekly claim between Sunday and the following Saturday. If you're meeting all these requirements and your claim is active, you should continue receiving benefits.

•What counts as a job search activity? I've been applying online but not sure if that's enough.

•Online applications definitely count. You can also include things like attending job fairs, networking events, creating/updating your resume, or contacting employers directly. Just make sure to log the details in your job search record.

The confusion might be coming from all the changes that happened during COVID. Those special programs ended, but regular unemployment insurance never went away. As long as you qualified initially and you're still meeting the ongoing requirements, you can collect benefits until you find work or exhaust your benefit weeks.

•That makes sense. I think I was just overthinking it because of all the news about benefit programs ending.

•Yeah, a lot of people got confused when PUA and PEUC ended. Regular UI is different - it's the standard program that's been around forever.

One thing to watch out for - make sure you're not missing any correspondence from Washington ESD. Sometimes they send notices about verifying your identity or needing additional information. If you don't respond timely, it can cause issues with your claim.

•I check my messages in the system regularly and haven't gotten any notices. Should I be worried if I haven't heard anything?

•No, that's actually good news. No news is usually good news with Washington ESD. Just keep doing what you're doing.

I'm in a similar situation - been collecting since December and haven't had any issues. As long as you're filing your weekly claims and meeting the work search requirements, you should be fine. The system is pretty straightforward once you get used to it.

•Good to hear from someone in the same boat. Have you had any luck finding work? The job market seems tough right now.

•It's definitely challenging. I've had a few interviews but nothing solid yet. At least the unemployment benefits are helping keep me afloat while I search.

Just wanted to add that if you ever do run into issues or need to speak with someone at Washington ESD, that Claimyr service mentioned earlier is really helpful. I was stuck in adjudication for weeks and couldn't get through on the phone until I used their service. Much easier than trying to call on your own.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm trying to be careful with money while I'm unemployed.

•It's worth checking out their website for the details. For me, it was worth it just to get my claim moving again instead of being stuck in limbo.

The Washington ESD system can definitely be confusing, especially if you're new to it. But yes, regular unemployment benefits are still available. Just focus on meeting your weekly requirements and you should be fine. Don't let the horror stories online freak you out too much.

•Yeah, people are more likely to post when they're having problems than when everything is going smoothly. Most claims process without major issues.

I've been collecting for about 8 weeks now and haven't had any major problems. The main thing is just staying on top of your weekly claims and job search activities. The system works pretty well if you follow the rules.

•That's reassuring. I think I'm doing everything right, just needed some confirmation from people who've been through it.

•Same here - been smooth sailing for the most part. Just file your claims on time and keep looking for work.

One tip - make sure you're using the correct website (secure.esd.wa.gov) and not any fake sites. There have been some scams targeting unemployed people. Always go directly to the official Washington ESD website.

•Good point! I've been using the link from the emails they send me, so I think I'm on the right site.

•Yeah, that's the safest way. Never click on links from suspicious emails claiming to be from Washington ESD.

If you're still feeling uncertain, you could always try calling Washington ESD directly to confirm your claim status. I know the wait times can be brutal, but sometimes it's worth it for peace of mind. Or like others mentioned, there are services that can help you get connected faster.

•I might try that Claimyr thing if I run into any issues. For now, it sounds like I'm doing everything correctly.

•That's probably the best approach - if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Just keep doing what you're doing and only call if you actually need help.

Bottom line - yes, you can still collect unemployment in Washington. The regular UI program never stopped, just the pandemic programs ended. Keep filing your weekly claims, do your job searches, and you should be fine. Don't overthink it!
