Can you file for unemployment if your hours are cut - Washington ESD eligibility question
My employer just cut my hours from 40 to 20 per week due to slow business. I'm wondering if I can file for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD since I'm basically working part-time now? I've been at this job for 2 years full-time and this is a huge pay cut. Does anyone know if reduced hours qualify you for partial unemployment in Washington state?

Yes, you can absolutely file for partial unemployment benefits in Washington! If your hours or wages are reduced through no fault of your own, you may be eligible for partial UI benefits. The key is that the reduction has to be involuntary - which sounds like your situation.

•That's good news! Do you know what the income limits are? I'm still making some money obviously.

•Washington ESD has a formula where you can earn up to a certain amount and still receive partial benefits. Generally you can earn up to 1.5 times your weekly benefit amount before it affects your UI payment.

You'll need to file through the Washington ESD website and report your reduced hours when you file your weekly claims. Make sure you have documentation showing the hour reduction wasn't voluntary on your part.

•Should I get something in writing from my boss about the hour cuts?

Paolo Bianchi
•Yes definitely! Email or written notice about the schedule change will help support your claim if there are any questions during adjudication.

•This is really helpful info, I'm in a similar situation and wasn't sure if I qualified.

I had to deal with this exact situation last year when my restaurant cut everyone's hours. I tried calling Washington ESD for weeks to get through and ask about partial benefits but could never reach anyone. The phone system is absolutely terrible - I'd get disconnected after waiting for hours.

•Oh god the phone situation is the worst! I found this service called Claimyr that actually helped me get through to Washington ESD agents. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Really? How does that work exactly? I'm so tired of the busy signals and hold music.

•Basically they handle the calling for you and connect you when they get through to an actual person. Saved me so much frustration when I needed to talk to someone about my adjudication status.

Thanks everyone! I'm going to start the application process today. One more question - do I need to be actively job searching even though I still have my current job?

Keisha Thompson
•Yes, you still need to meet the job search requirements even for partial unemployment. You'll need to log your job search activities in WorkSourceWA.

•Wait really? That seems weird if you already have a job...

•The requirement is there because the goal is to help you find full-time work to replace the lost hours/income. Makes sense when you think about it that way.

Just be prepared for potential delays in processing. My partial claim took 3 weeks to get approved and they had to verify my employment situation with my employer first.

•Did they contact your employer directly? I hope this doesn't cause issues with my boss.

•They sent a form to my employer asking about my work history and the reason for reduced hours. It's pretty standard and shouldn't cause problems as long as you're honest about everything.

Make sure you understand how the benefit calculation works too. Your weekly benefit amount will be based on your earnings during your base period, but then they'll reduce it based on what you're currently earning from your part-time hours.

•This is getting complicated... is there a calculator somewhere to figure out what I might get?

•Washington ESD has benefit calculators on their website but they're not always accurate for partial claims. Your best bet is to file and see what they determine.

•I used one of those calculators and it was way off from what I actually got. Don't rely on them too much.

Been there done that! Filed for partial unemployment when my hours got cut from 35 to 25. The process was actually pretty smooth once I got through the initial application. Just make sure you report your earnings accurately on your weekly claims.

•How long did it take to start receiving benefits?

Hiroshi Nakamura
•About 2 weeks after filing, but I had no complications. Some people wait longer if there are issues with their claim.

The Washington ESD system is so confusing for partial claims. I made the mistake of not reporting some small side gig income and they hit me with an overpayment notice months later. Be super careful about reporting ALL income.

TechNinja
•Yikes! How much trouble did that cause?

Isabella Costa
•Had to pay back like $800 plus penalties. Not fun. Just be 100% honest about everything you earn.

•This is why I'm scared to file... what if I mess something up?

Don't let the horror stories scare you off! Thousands of people successfully file for partial unemployment every year. Just read the instructions carefully and you'll be fine.

One thing to keep in mind - if your hours get restored to full-time later, you'll need to report that change immediately. Some people forget and get in trouble for continuing to claim benefits.

•Good point! I'll make sure to update my claim if things change.

•Yeah the system doesn't automatically know when your situation changes, you have to tell them.

My hours got cut last month and I'm still waiting to hear back about my claim. Washington ESD said they need to verify my employment but it's been weeks. Anyone else deal with long verification delays?

•You might want to try that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. I used it when I needed to follow up on my adjudication and it actually worked - got me connected to a real person.

•Is it legit though? I'm always skeptical of third-party services for government stuff.

•I was skeptical too but they just help you get through the phone system, they don't handle your actual claim or anything. Worth checking out their demo video if you're curious.

For anyone reading this thread - partial unemployment is definitely a thing and you should absolutely apply if your hours were cut involuntarily. Don't leave money on the table!

Quick question - do you have to wait a week before you can start claiming benefits? I know there's usually a waiting period for regular unemployment.
0 coins
Keisha Thompson
•Yes, there's still a one-week waiting period for partial unemployment claims just like regular UI. You file for that first week but don't get paid for it.

•Got it, thanks! Better than nothing I guess.

Just wanted to add that you should keep all your paystubs and any documentation about your hour reduction. Washington ESD might ask for them during the claims process.

The system has gotten better over the years but there can still be glitches. Don't panic if your first weekly claim shows weird amounts - sometimes it takes a couple weeks for everything to sync up properly.

•That's reassuring to know! I'll try not to stress if the numbers look off initially.

Filing online is definitely the way to go. Much faster than trying to do it over the phone. The website walks you through everything step by step.

Has anyone had issues with their employer fighting the partial unemployment claim? I'm worried my boss might not cooperate with Washington ESD if they contact him.
0 coins
Luca Ricci
•Most employers don't fight legitimate partial claims, especially if the hour reduction was due to business reasons. It's in their interest to keep good employees even at reduced hours.

•That makes sense. I think I'm overthinking this.

•I'm a little worried about the same thing but figure I have to try. These reduced hours are really hurting financially.

Don't forget that you might also qualify for other assistance programs while you're on partial unemployment. Food stamps, utility assistance, etc. Worth looking into if money is tight.

One last tip - if you run into any issues during the process, don't give up. Sometimes claims get denied initially but can be approved on appeal. The system isn't perfect but it does work if you persist.
