Can you collect unemployment if you have a job lined up Washington ESD rules

I got laid off from my construction job 2 weeks ago and filed for unemployment with Washington ESD. My claim got approved and I've been doing my weekly claims. Here's my situation - I have a job offer that starts in 6 weeks but I'm not sure if I can still collect UI benefits while I'm waiting for it to start? The new job doesn't begin until March 15th and I need income until then. Does Washington ESD allow you to collect benefits if you already have future employment lined up? I don't want to mess up my claim by not reporting this correctly.

Yes you can still collect as long as you're able and available for work right now. Having a future start date doesn't disqualify you from current benefits. Just make sure you're still doing your job search activities and available to accept other work if offered before your start date.

That's a relief! Do I need to report the future job offer anywhere on my weekly claim or just wait until I actually start working?

0 coins

You should be fine to wait until you actually start. The weekly claim asks about work performed during that specific week, not future commitments.

0 coins

Be careful about the able and available requirement. If Washington ESD finds out you're turning down other work because you have something lined up, that could be an issue. You need to be genuinely available for immediate employment.

So if someone offered me a job tomorrow I'd have to take it even though I have this other one starting in March?

0 coins

Technically yes, you're supposed to be available for suitable work. But realistically most employers understand if you have a short waiting period. Just don't turn down good opportunities solely because of your future start date.

This is exactly why I used Claimyr when I had questions about my claim status. Their service helped me get through to an actual Washington ESD agent who explained the able and available rules clearly. Way better than trying to guess from the website. Check out claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

I was in almost the exact same situation last year! Had a gap between jobs and collected for about 5 weeks while waiting for my new position to start. Washington ESD never questioned it as long as I kept up with my job search log and weekly claims.

0 coins

That's reassuring! Did you mention the future job during any of your weekly claims or just stay quiet about it?

0 coins

I didn't mention it until the week I actually started working. The questions are pretty specific about work performed during that week, not future plans.

wait so you can collect unemployment even if you know youre going back to work?? that seems wrong

0 coins

It's not wrong if you're genuinely unemployed right now and available for immediate work. The system is designed to help people during periods of unemployment, regardless of what might happen in the future.

0 coins

i guess that makes sense but it still feels weird

0 coins

The key thing is being honest about your availability. As long as you would accept suitable work if offered today, you're meeting the requirements. Having a job that starts in 6 weeks doesn't change your current unemployed status.

0 coins

This makes sense. I definitely would take other work if something came up before March. Thanks for clarifying!

0 coins

Just make sure you understand what 'suitable work' means for your situation. Washington ESD has specific criteria about what kinds of jobs you're required to accept based on your previous wages and experience.

0 coins

Good point. I've been applying to construction and related trades jobs, which is what I did before. Should I be looking at other types of work too?

0 coins

For the first few weeks you can be pretty selective, but after a while Washington ESD expects you to broaden your search. Check the handbook they sent you for the specific timeline.

0 coins

I've seen people get in trouble for not being truly available while collecting. Washington ESD does audits and if they find out you were turning down work just to wait for a preferred job, they can demand repayment.

0 coins

That's scary. How would they even find out about job offers I might turn down?

0 coins

Usually through employer reports or if you mention it during an interview with Washington ESD. Just be genuine about your availability and you should be fine.

0 coins

The whole system is confusing honestly. When I had questions about my claim I tried calling Washington ESD for weeks and never got through. Finally used Claimyr and got connected to an agent the same day. They explained all the rules about being available for work and it made everything much clearer.

0 coins

How much does that service cost? I've been trying to reach Washington ESD about my own claim issues.

0 coins

It's worth checking out their website at claimyr.com. They focus on getting you connected rather than charging high fees. Much less frustrating than trying to call Washington ESD yourself.

0 coins

Been there! Had a 4 week gap between jobs and collected the whole time. No issues at all. Just keep doing your weekly claims and job search activities like normal until your new job actually starts.

0 coins

Perfect, that's exactly my situation. Did you have to do anything special on your last weekly claim when you started the new job?

0 coins

Yeah you'll report your first week of work on your weekly claim and that will end your benefits. Pretty straightforward process.

0 coins

The unemployment system is set up for exactly these situations. You lost your job through no fault of your own and you're temporarily unemployed. Having future employment doesn't change your current need for benefits.

0 coins

Thank you! This thread has been really helpful. I feel much better about continuing to file my claims.

Make sure you're keeping good records of your job search activities. Washington ESD can ask for your job search log at any time and you need to show you're actively looking for work.

0 coins

I've been keeping track in the WorkSourceWA system. Is that enough or should I have my own separate log too?

0 coins

The WorkSourceWA system should be sufficient, but I always recommend keeping your own backup records just in case.

this happened to my brother and he collected for like 2 months while waiting for his new job to start. never had any problems with washington esd

0 coins

Good to hear another success story! Did he mention the future job to Washington ESD or just wait until he started working?

0 coins

he just waited until he actually started working then reported it on his weekly claim

0 coins

One thing to remember is that you'll need to report any income from the new job starting from your first day of work. Don't forget to file that final weekly claim showing your work hours and wages.

0 coins

Will do! I assume that automatically ends my claim once I report full-time work?

0 coins

Exactly. Once you report full-time work your benefits will stop. You can always reopen your claim later if needed within the benefit year.

0 coins

I had the same situation but with an 8 week gap. Collected the whole time without issues. The key is being honest about your current availability and continuing to meet all the weekly requirements.

0 coins

That's a longer gap than mine! Did Washington ESD ever question why you weren't finding work sooner?

0 coins

Nope, never came up. I was doing my job searches and would have taken suitable work if offered. Having a future job doesn't disqualify you from current benefits.

0 coins

Just to add another perspective - I work in HR and we understand when candidates need a few weeks before starting. It's completely normal and doesn't affect your unemployment eligibility as long as you're still available for immediate work if something else comes up.

0 coins

That's helpful to hear from the employer side! I was worried about how this might look.

0 coins

The washington esd website has info about this under the able and available section. basically you just need to be ready to work now even if you have something starting later

0 coins

I'll check that out for more details. Thanks for pointing me to the right section!

For anyone still having trouble getting clear answers from Washington ESD directly, I can't recommend Claimyr enough. They helped me get through when I had complex questions about my claim. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a demo video that shows exactly how they help connect you with Washington ESD agents.

0 coins

I might need to try this. I've been on hold with Washington ESD for hours today trying to get answers about my adjudication.

0 coins

That's exactly the kind of situation where Claimyr helps the most. They specialize in getting you connected when the normal phone lines aren't working.

0 coins

Bottom line - you're unemployed now and eligible for benefits now. Future employment doesn't change your current situation. Just keep meeting all the weekly requirements until you actually start working.

0 coins

Perfect summary! Thanks everyone for all the helpful responses. I feel confident about continuing my claims now.

0 coins

Glad this thread helped! These kinds of situations come up all the time and it's totally normal.

0 coins

Good luck with the new job! 6 weeks will go by fast and at least you have the security of knowing you have something lined up.

0 coins

Thanks! Yeah it definitely helps to have that peace of mind while I'm job searching.
