Can you collect unemployment if laid off in Washington - need to know eligibility
My company just announced they're laying off about 30% of their workforce next month and I'm pretty sure I'm going to be one of them. I've been working there for almost 2 years full-time. This is my first time dealing with unemployment so I honestly don't know much about the process. Can you actually collect unemployment benefits if you get laid off? What do I need to do to apply with Washington ESD? Any help would be appreciated since I'm starting to panic about how I'll pay my bills.

Yes, you can definitely collect unemployment if you're laid off! That's exactly what unemployment insurance is for. Being laid off through no fault of your own makes you eligible for Washington ESD benefits. You'll need to file your claim as soon as possible after your last day of work. The process is pretty straightforward - you can apply online through the Washington ESD website.

•Thank you! That's such a relief to hear. Do you know how much I might be able to get?

•It depends on your earnings history, but Washington ESD calculates it based on your highest earning quarter. You can get up to about $844 per week maximum, but most people get somewhere between $200-500 depending on what they were making.

Just went through this myself last year when my company downsized. The key thing is to apply right away - don't wait! You can file your claim online at secure.esd.wa.gov. Make sure you have your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history ready. Also keep track of any severance pay because that might affect when your benefits start.

•Good point about the severance. I think they mentioned something about a severance package but I'm not sure what that means for unemployment.

•Severance usually just delays when you can start collecting, but you'll still be eligible once the severance period ends.

I was in the same boat a few months ago - massive layoffs at my company. One thing that really helped was using Claimyr to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD. I was having trouble understanding some of the requirements and kept getting disconnected when I called. Found out about claimyr.com and they helped me get through to an actual person who explained everything. There's even a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•That sounds really helpful! I'm definitely going to need to talk to someone because I have no idea what I'm doing.

•I've heard of Claimyr but never tried it. Does it actually work for getting through to Washington ESD?

•Yeah it worked great for me. I was able to get my questions answered about job search requirements and weekly claims without sitting on hold for hours.

ugh the whole system is such a mess. I got laid off in march and it took forever to get my first payment. make sure you do your weekly claims EVERY week even if your claim is still pending or you'll lose those weeks forever!!!

•Wait, what are weekly claims? I thought you just applied once?

Yara Nassar
•You have to file a weekly claim every week to certify that you're still unemployed and looking for work. It's like checking in with Washington ESD each week.

Been there! You'll also need to register with WorkSource Washington for job search activities. Don't skip this step - it's required to keep getting benefits. You need to do at least 3 job search activities per week and keep a log of what you did.

•3 job search activities per week? What counts as an activity?

•Applying for jobs, attending job fairs, networking events, career workshops - stuff like that. You have to document it all in your job search log.

•The job search requirements are actually really reasonable. I found a new job within 6 weeks just by doing the minimum requirements.

Make sure you understand the difference between being laid off and being fired for cause. Laid off = eligible for benefits. Fired for misconduct = not eligible. Since you're being laid off due to company downsizing, you should be fine.

•Yeah it's definitely a layoff, not being fired. They're just cutting costs.

Also keep in mind that unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can choose to have taxes withheld from your weekly payments or pay them when you file your tax return. I learned this the hard way and owed money at tax time.

•Good to know! I'll probably have them withhold taxes then.

The whole process was pretty smooth for me when I got laid off. Applied online, got approved within a week, and started receiving payments. Just make sure you have all your employment dates and employer contact info ready when you apply.

•That's encouraging! I'm going to start gathering all my employment information now so I'm ready.

One more thing - if your employer contests your claim (which they probably won't for a layoff), don't panic. You can appeal and Washington ESD will investigate. Layoffs are pretty cut and dried so there's usually no issue.

•Why would they contest it if it's a layoff?

Malik Johnson
•They usually don't for layoffs, but sometimes companies try to claim it was performance-related instead of a true layoff. Just something to be aware of.

Start your claim the Monday after your last day of work. That's when your benefit year begins. And remember, there's a one-week waiting period before you can receive your first payment, so don't expect money right away.

•So I won't get paid for the first week?

Isabella Santos
•Right, the first week is a waiting period. You'll file the claim but won't get paid for that week.

I'm going through this right now too. Got laid off last month and the hardest part was actually getting through to Washington ESD on the phone when I had questions. I ended up using Claimyr after someone recommended it on here and it was so much easier than trying to call myself.

•That's the second mention of Claimyr. Sounds like it's really helpful for getting through to Washington ESD.

•I used it too when my claim got stuck in adjudication. Way better than spending hours on hold just to get disconnected.

Just remember that unemployment is temporary assistance while you look for new work. Use the time wisely to improve your skills or network. Some people get too comfortable and stop looking seriously for jobs.

•Definitely planning to use it as a bridge while I find something new. Hopefully it won't take too long.

The maximum benefit period is usually 26 weeks, but it can vary depending on the unemployment rate. Right now I think it's the standard 26 weeks in Washington.

Connor Murphy
•26 weeks should be plenty of time to find something new, hopefully!

Make sure you're honest about everything on your application. Washington ESD does verify information with employers, so don't try to fudge anything about why you were let go or your work history.

•Of course! I have nothing to hide - it's a straightforward layoff situation.

Keep all your documentation too - your layoff notice, final paystub, any correspondence with your employer. You might need it later if there are any questions about your claim.

•Good advice! I'll make sure to keep copies of everything.

Once you get your claim approved, you'll get a debit card in the mail for your payments. It takes about a week to arrive, so don't worry if you don't get it right away after your first payment is processed.
