Can I get unemployment while receiving severance? (EDD eligibility question)
Hey everyone, I just got laid off and I'm trying to figure out if I can get unemployment while I'm receiving severance. Has anyone been in this situation before? What was your experience like? I'm not sure how the severance package affects my eligibility for unemployment benefits. Any advice would be really appreciated!

I was in a similar situation last year. It really depends on your state's laws and the specifics of your severance package. In my case, I had to wait until my severance period ended before I could start collecting unemployment. But definitely apply asap and be upfront about your severance - the unemployment office will let you know how it affects your eligibility.

This is good advice. I'd also recommend checking your state's unemployment website for specific info on severance and unemployment. Some states treat it differently.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I'll definitely apply right away and be honest about the severance. Fingers crossed it works out š¤

Here's what you need to know about unemployment and severance: ā¢ Severance doesn't automatically disqualify you from unemployment ā¢ Some states may delay your benefits until after the severance period ā¢ You must report your severance when you apply ā¢ Lump sum vs. periodic payments can be treated differently ā¢ Severance might reduce your weekly benefit amount Your best bet is to apply ASAP and let the unemployment office determine your eligibility. They'll consider factors like your state's laws, the terms of your severance, and your overall situation. Don't forget to gather all your employment documents, including your severance agreement, before applying. And be prepared for a potentially long wait - the system is overwhelmed right now.

This is great info! Do you know if vacation payout is treated the same way as severance?

Vacation payout is often treated differently from severance. In many states, it doesn't affect unemployment eligibility or benefits. But always report it when you apply to be safe!

i was in the same boat last month lol. applied for unemployment right away even tho i was getting severance. turns out my state (CA) doesn't count severance as wages so i could get benefits right away. but every state is diffrent so ymmv

Lucky you! In my state, they made me wait until the severance period was over. The system is so inconsistent š

Whatever you do, don't spend that severance too quick! Unemployment benefits are a joke compared to a real salary. Start cutting expenses now and make that severance last as long as possible.

That's a good point. I'm definitely going to be tightening my belt. Any tips for stretching the budget?

Cancel all subscriptions, cook at home, use public transit if possible. And start job hunting immediately - the market is tough rn.

Hey guys, I found a method to actually get someone on the phone at the unemployment office. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Check out this video for more info: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ

Sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

$20 just to talk to someone? That's ridiculous. The system is so broken š”

I know it sounds sketchy, but I swear it worked for me. After weeks of trying to get through, it was worth the $20 to finally talk to a real person and get my issue resolved.
