Can I get retroactive unemployment benefits if my employer didn't inform me I could apply?
Hey everyone, I just found out that I might be eligible for back paid unemployment benefits. I was laid off a while ago, but my employer never told us we could apply for unemployment. I only learned about it recently from a coworker who got laid off at the same time. Has anyone else been in this situation? Is it possible to get retroactive benefits? Any advice on how to approach this with the unemployment office?

Wow, that sucks that your employer didn't inform you! Unfortunately, it's pretty common. I was in a similar situation last year. Here's what I learned: ā¢ You can definitely apply for retroactive benefits ā¢ You'll need to provide a good reason for the late filing (your employer not informing you is valid) ā¢ Be prepared to show proof of your layoff date and that you were eligible during that time ā¢ Contact the unemployment office ASAP - there might be time limits on how far back you can claim Good luck! The process can be frustrating, but don't give up. You're entitled to those benefits!

This is great advice! I'd add that keeping a detailed record of all your communications with the unemployment office is crucial. It can be a lifesaver if there are any disputes later on.

Hey, I found a way to actually get someone on the phone at the unemployment office! I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video explaining it: https://youtu.be/Ize0EkN4HDI

I get it, times are tough. But for me, it was worth it to finally get my issues resolved. Maybe split the cost with a friend who also needs to call?

Quick question - does anyone know if theres a time limit on how far back you can claim? I've been putting this off for months š¬

Man, I feel for you. I was in the exact same boat last year. It took some persistence, but I eventually got my back pay. Don't give up!

It took about 2 months from start to finish. But I've heard it can vary a lot depending on your specific situation and how backed up the office is.

Pro tip: If you can't get through on the phone, try reaching out on Twitter. Sometimes their social media team can help or at least escalate your case.
