Good luck with your claim! The process seems overwhelming at first but it really does get easier once you get into the routine of filing weekly claims and doing your job searches.
One last thing - keep copies of everything. Screenshot your weekly claim confirmations, save emails from Washington ESD, print important documents. If anything goes wrong, you'll want that paper trail.
Thanks everyone for all the helpful information. Sounds like I need to focus on my recovery and look into other assistance programs rather than trying to get unemployment while on disability. Really appreciate all the advice and resources!
thanks everyone this thread has been super helpful. sounds like i need to wait until my doctor clears me before doing anything with ui
Just want to add that having to choose between work and caring for family shouldn't put you in financial crisis. You did the right thing and Washington state recognizes that with these protections. Fight for what you're entitled to.
One more thing - if Washington ESD denies your initial claim, don't give up! You have the right to appeal and many compelling circumstances cases get approved on appeal even if they're denied initially. The appeals process gives you more opportunity to present your full situation.
Good to know there's a backup plan if the first decision doesn't go my way. How long do you have to file an appeal?
Just want to second the recommendation for that Claimyr service if you need to talk to Washington ESD about your options. I used them when I had questions about my claim and finally got clear answers instead of the usual phone tree nightmare.
Bottom line is there aren't extended benefits available right now in Washington unless something major changes with the economy. Focus on alternative programs and keep searching for work. The job market is tough but people are still getting hired.

this whole conversation is giving me flashbacks to my own nightmare with washington esd last year. the amount of paperwork and phone calls was insane. but i did eventually get my benefits so there is hope!

•about 8 weeks total. first few weeks were processing, then they had questions that delayed it another month. but once it was approved, i got all the back pay.

For what it's worth, I think the Washington ESD website has some good information about eligibility during family leave. It's buried in there somewhere, but it might be worth checking out before you file.

•I'll definitely look for that. Every bit of information helps when navigating this system.

•The website is helpful but can be confusing. Don't hesitate to call if you have specific questions about your situation. Each case is unique.
