I had trouble reaching Washington ESD last year until someone told me about Claimyr. Game changer for actually getting through to talk to someone about my claim issues.
Overall the Washington ESD system works pretty well these days. Your friend shouldn't stress too much about it. Just file promptly and follow the rules.
One more tip - when you get to your hearing, speak slowly and clearly. The judge has to take notes on everything you say so give them time to write it down. Don't rush through your explanation.
One last thing - make sure you understand how partial unemployment works. You can usually earn up to a certain amount before your benefits start getting reduced. Washington ESD has calculators on their website to help you figure out what you can earn.
Bottom line: file if you're eligible. Your employer's tax rate might go up slightly, but that's how the system is supposed to work. They pay when they can't provide work, and employees get support to bridge the gap. Don't let them make you feel guilty about using a system that exists for exactly your situation.
I successfully appealed a misconduct disqualification last year. Key was having witnesses and documentation. The phone hearing took about 45 minutes but it was worth it to get my benefits restored.
Bottom line - don't assume you're automatically disqualified. Washington ESD makes mistakes all the time. If you think you have a valid claim, file it and appeal if necessary. Just make sure you understand the requirements and document everything.
And don't be afraid to use services like Claimyr if you can't get through the regular phone system. Sometimes you need professional help navigating the bureaucracy.

Don't forget that you have a limited time to file your appeal - I think it's 30 days from the date of your determination letter. Don't wait too long to decide. Even if you're not sure about your chances, it's usually worth appealing if you think you had good cause to quit.

•Good point about the deadline. My letter is dated last week so I still have time. I think I'm going to file the appeal and see what happens.

•Smart choice. The worst they can do is uphold the original decision, but if you win you'll get backpay for all the weeks you were denied. That could be substantial money.

I used that Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier when I needed help with my overpayment issue. It really does work for getting through to Washington ESD when you need to talk to an actual person about your case. Sometimes you just need clarification that you can't get from the website.

•I might try that if I need more information for my appeal. The determination letter is pretty vague about exactly what they want to see as evidence.
