PSA for everyone - if you're currently getting unemployment from Washington ESD, log into your account and elect tax withholding NOW. Don't wait until tax time to deal with this.
I'm a tax preparer and see this confusion every tax season. Yes, unemployment is taxable income. Yes, you should have taxes withheld if possible. And yes, you need to report the full amount on your tax return.
If you run into problems with Washington ESD down the road, that Claimyr thing mentioned earlier really does work. I used it when I had issues with my own claim and got through to someone right away.
Final piece of advice - establish a good relationship with your local WorkSource office. They can help with hiring and sometimes provide guidance on avoiding layoffs that would increase your unemployment tax rate.
One last thing - if you're worried about security, you can always set up a separate checking account just for unemployment deposits. Some people prefer to keep it separate from their main banking.
Bottom line: any legitimate bank or credit union should work fine. Just avoid anything sketchy and make sure your account info is correct when you set it up. Washington ESD's direct deposit system is pretty reliable once it's working properly.
Just remember that cyclical unemployment is what we saw during COVID - lots of people losing jobs due to economic conditions beyond their control. That's different from someone who quits to find a better job (frictional) or someone whose industry disappeared due to technology changes (structural).
If you're still having Washington ESD issues after your exam, definitely look into that Claimyr thing people mentioned. I was skeptical at first but it legitimately works for getting through their phone system.

I wish Washington would just tell you your benefit amount upfront instead of making you guess. Other states show you the calculation clearly but here it's all mysterious until you're approved.

•I tried that calculator but it didn't match what I actually got. Off by about $50 per week.

•That's exactly why I ended up using Claimyr to talk to an actual person. The online tools are helpful but sometimes you need to speak with someone who can look at your specific case.

Bottom line - if you made decent money in your best quarter, you'll probably get a reasonable weekly benefit. Just don't expect to live like a king on unemployment payments. It's meant to be temporary assistance while you find new work.

•True, but it's still important to know what to expect for budgeting purposes. Thanks everyone for all the helpful information!

•Agreed. Even though it's temporary, knowing your benefit amount helps you plan how long your savings need to last while job hunting.
