ok this has been educational but im still confused about why unemployment rose so much in 1938 specifically. was it really just government spending cuts?
Well this thread definitely answered the original question! The 1938 unemployment spike was caused by policy mistakes, and it helped shape how we think about unemployment insurance today. Pretty cool how Washington ESD's history connects to major economic events.
And hopefully some people got help with their current Washington ESD issues too. Remember that Claimyr service if you're having trouble getting through on the phone!
Whatever you do, don't wait too long to file. There are time limits on when you can apply for benefits. Better to file now and potentially get denied than to wait and miss your chance entirely.
Good luck with your claim! Remember that Washington ESD has to prove you committed misconduct - you don't have to prove you didn't. If your absences were due to emergencies, that's a strong defense.
One thing I wish someone had told me - save screenshots of your completed application before submitting. If there are any issues later, it's helpful to have that record.
Apply as soon as possible after you lose your job. There's no waiting period in Washington but you want to get the process started right away.
hope this works out for you! the combination of job hunting pressure plus visa timeline plus figuring out benefits is rough but you'll get through it
Final summary for you: 26 weeks maximum duration, same as any other claimant. Focus on meeting work search requirements, keep your documentation current, and file your weekly claims on time. Your visa status doesn't disqualify you from Washington ESD benefits if you've been paying in.

I've been tracking unemployment benefit rates across states for a research project and Washington consistently ranks in the top 3-5. The maximum weekly benefit amount of $999 puts it ahead of about 45 other states. But the duration is standard at 26 weeks like most places.

•Several states have proposed increases but it's slow going. Political resistance to raising unemployment benefits is pretty strong in most places.

•Meanwhile cost of living keeps going up but benefit amounts in most states stay the same for years. At least Washington adjusts theirs periodically.

The frustrating thing is that even with Washington having relatively high benefits, the process to get help when you have issues is still terrible. I needed to talk to someone about my job search requirements and it took using a service called Claimyr to actually reach a human at Washington ESD.

•It's basically a callback service that handles the waiting and calling for you. Way better than sitting on hold for hours. Check out their demo video if you want to see how it works.

•I'm definitely going to look into this. The phone situation with Washington ESD has been my biggest frustration.
