Remember that if you do any part-time work while collecting unemployment, you MUST report it on your weekly claim. Even just a few hours can affect your payment.
Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who helped explain this process. I filed my claim yesterday and it went much smoother than I expected. Keeping my fingers crossed that it gets approved quickly!
Good luck everyone! And remember Claimyr is there if you need to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD.
One thing to watch out for - if your claim goes to adjudication, they might ask detailed questions about your medical condition and work capacity. Be prepared to explain how you can meet job requirements with or without accommodations.
Bottom line: diabetes doesn't disqualify you from unemployment as long as you're able and available for work. Your termination circumstances might be reviewed, but medical documentation should support your case. Don't let the condition itself worry you about eligibility.
just want to say thanks to whoever mentioned claimyr earlier. finally got through to esd and found out i had a job search requirement issue that was holding up my claim. would have never known without talking to an actual person
So if I understand correctly, we're basically at the mercy of economic conditions for extended benefits? That seems backward - shouldn't extended benefits be MORE available when the economy is bad, not less?
Extended benefits ARE more available when the economy is bad - that's exactly when unemployment rates are high enough to trigger them. The current relatively low unemployment rate is why EB isn't available right now.
Bottom line for the original poster - you'll likely get close to the full 26 weeks if you worked steadily for 8 years. Make sure to file your weekly claims on time and keep up with your job search requirements. The benefits should give you a good cushion while you look for your next position.
One last tip - if you do need to contact Washington ESD and can't get through on your own, that Claimyr service really does work. I was skeptical at first but it saved me weeks of frustration trying to get answers about my claim duration and weekly benefit amount.

Honestly, sometimes getting fired from a toxic situation is the push you need to find something better. Try to see it as an opportunity rather than just a setback if it happens.

•I'm trying to keep that perspective. This job has been making me miserable anyway, so maybe it would be for the best in the long run.

•That's the right attitude! Life's too short to stay in a job that makes you dread going to work every day.

Had to use Claimyr again recently when I had questions about my job search requirements. So much easier than trying to get through on the phone myself. If you do end up filing for unemployment, it's worth having that option to actually talk to someone when you have questions.

•I'll definitely keep that in mind. Having access to real information instead of just guessing would be huge.

•Yeah, the peace of mind from getting accurate information is worth it when you're dealing with something as important as your income.
