Will Social Security in-person appointments still exist in 2025? Mine's scheduled for next month

I finally managed to schedule an in-person appointment at my local SSA office for next month to discuss my retirement options (turning 62 in June). But my neighbor just told me she heard the SSA is planning to eliminate all in-person appointments and move everything online by 2025. Is this true? I'm really worried because I have questions about my divorced spouse benefits that I don't think I can handle through the website. Has anyone else heard about this? Should I try to prepare differently for my appointment?

My daughter works for SSA and says thats not true at all. They are actually EXPANDING in-person services next year!! Your neighbor is wrong.

Oh thank goodness! That's such a relief to hear. Do you know if there are any changes I should be aware of for my appointment?

There's no plan to eliminate in-person appointments. The SSA has actually been reopening more offices and expanding hours since the pandemic restrictions ended. For your appointment about divorced spouse benefits, make sure you bring your marriage certificate, divorce decree, and your ex's SSN if you have it. Also bring your own ID and SSN card. If you were married for at least 10 years and haven't remarried, you may be eligible for benefits on your ex's record if they're higher than your own. But you should still analyze whether claiming at 62 is your best option - your benefit will be reduced by about 30% from your Full Retirement Age amount.

Thank you so much for this detailed response! I was married for 12 years and never remarried, so that sounds promising. I'm bringing all those documents, but didn't think about bringing proof of the marriage length - good reminder! I'm still not sure if claiming at 62 is right for me, that's why I wanted the in-person appointment to discuss the calculations.

Just want to add that even though in-person appointments are definitely continuing, you might want to consider making a list of specific questions before you go. The agents are usually on a tight schedule, so being prepared helps make sure you get all your questions answered in the time allotted. For divorced spouse benefits specifically, ask them to run calculations showing what you'd get at different claiming ages - 62 vs. FRA vs. 70. The difference can be substantial.

OMG the SSA is ABSOLUTELY reducing in-person appointments!!! My brother had to wait 3 MONTHS to get an appointment when he could walk in before the pandemic!!! They're forcing everything online and the phone system is a JOKE!!! They've closed 67 field offices since 2010!!! The writing is on the wall people!!!

I had a nightmare trying to reach SSA by phone last month when I needed to check on my SSDI application status. After being disconnected four times and waiting on hold for hours, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an agent in under 10 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU - saved me so much frustration! For your situation though, definitely keep your in-person appointment since you need to discuss calculation options. In-person is still the best for complex questions about things like divorced spouse benefits.

Thanks for the tip! I'll keep that service in mind if I need to call them in the future. I'm definitely keeping my in-person appointment though - too many questions I need answered face-to-face.

@profile8 Yep, it worked for me! After wasting almost 2 days trying to get through, I was connected in minutes. Was totally worth it for the time saved.

my uncle works for ss in alabama and he said theyre not closing offices but they are pushing more people to use the my social security website for basic stuff. appointments still avail for complicated things like disability and divorce benefits. but wait times gettin longer cuz of baby boomers all retiring now

That makes sense. I tried using the website but couldn't figure out how to calculate the divorced spouse benefit options. Thanks for the info!

To directly answer your question - in-person appointments will absolutely continue to be available, especially for complex situations like divorced spouse benefits. What IS changing is that SSA is trying to shift more routine services (address changes, direct deposit updates, benefit verification, etc.) to their online portal. For your appointment, bring: marriage certificate, divorce decree, birth certificate, proof of citizenship if applicable, your most recent tax return, and a list of questions. Be specific about what you want to know regarding the interplay between your own retirement benefits and potential divorced spouse benefits. Also ask them to calculate your breakeven point - the age at which delaying benefits starts to pay off in total lifetime benefits.

This is exactly what I needed to know! I'll make sure to bring all those documents and prepare my questions in advance. The breakeven point calculation is definitely something I want to understand better.

Appointment times vary depending on ur local office. My mom tried to get one in Chicago and had to wait 6 weeks, but my office in rural Iowa had openings the next week. Try callin different offices near u if u need something sooner.

That's a good suggestion, but I'm actually fine with my appointment next month. I just wanted to make sure in-person appointments would continue to be an option in the future too.
