When does Social Security send 1099 tax forms for retirees still working?

I just turned 71 in November and I'm still working part-time while collecting my Social Security benefits. This will be my first time filing taxes while receiving both work income and SS benefits. I know I'll need documentation from Social Security showing how much I received in benefits for my tax return, but I have no idea when to expect this paperwork. Does anyone know what month Social Security typically sends out their tax forms? And what exactly am I looking for in the mail? I want to make sure I don't accidentally throw it away thinking it's junk mail!

Social Security sends out Form SSA-1099 (Social Security Benefit Statement) by the end of January each year. It shows your total benefits received during the previous tax year. They're typically mailed by January 31st, so expect it in early February. You can also download it from your my Social Security account online if you've set one up - they're usually available there by late January. The envelope will be from the Social Security Administration and should be clearly marked as containing tax information. It's not a huge document - just a couple of pages.

Thank you! I didn't realize I could get it online too. I do have a my Social Security account but I never check it. I'll look there first before worrying about the mail.

Oh no, I didn't think about owing more taxes! I had 20% withheld from my paychecks but nothing from my SS benefits. Now I'm worried.

I'm in the exact same situation (72 and still working at Costco). What's driving me nuts is that even though I'm past my FRA, Social Security still seems to care about my earnings. Last year I earned about $32,000 and my benefit amount changed twice! But to answer your question, I've received my 1099 from SSA by early February every year. Sometimes as early as January 20th, sometimes not until February 5th-ish. DEFINITELY check your mailbox carefully in that timeframe - the envelope is very plain looking.

Your benefits shouldn't be affected by earnings after FRA no matter how much you make. Sounds like those changes might have been COLA adjustments or something else. There's no earnings limit once you reach full retirement age.

IF YOU HAVE A MySocialSecurity ACCOUNT YOU CAN GET IT ONLINE RIGHT NOW!!!! Well not RIGHT now but usually by January 15th they post them online earlier than they mail them out. I haven't gotten a paper copy in years because I just print it from the website. One less thing to worry about losing in the mail!

That's great to know! I'll definitely check online first. I'm always worried about missing important mail.

Just to clarify since there seems to be some confusion: the form you're looking for is specifically called the SSA-1099. Social Security is required by law to mail these by January 31st. The form shows your gross benefits and any voluntary tax withholdings you may have had taken out. What many people don't realize is that if your combined income (adjusted gross income + nontaxable interest + half of SS benefits) exceeds certain thresholds, up to 85% of your benefits could be taxable. Since you're working, you'll almost certainly have some portion of your benefits subject to taxation. For 2023 tax returns, if you're filing single and your combined income exceeds $25,000, up to 50% of benefits are taxable. Above $34,000, up to 85% may be taxable. For married filing jointly, the thresholds are $32,000 and $44,000 respectively.

Thank you for explaining this! I had no idea that 85% of my SS benefits might be taxable. I definitely earn above those thresholds with my part-time job. I better start putting aside some money for taxes now.

I went through this same panic last January when I couldn't get through to SSA to find out where my 1099 was. Spent HOURS trying to reach them by phone. Finally discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com) which got me connected to an agent in 20 minutes instead of waiting on hold for hours. You can see how it works here: https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU Turns out I didn't even need to call because the form showed up the next day, but at least now I know how to actually reach SSA when I need to. I've used it twice since then for other questions about my benefits.

Let me address a couple points here: 1) SSA-1099 forms are typically available online by mid-January and mailed by January 31st. If you don't receive yours by February 15th, then it's time to contact SSA. 2) Since you're 71 and past Full Retirement Age, there's NO earnings limit affecting your benefits. You can earn any amount without reduction. 3) However, working while receiving benefits often surprises people at tax time. Up to 85% of your benefits may be taxable depending on your combined income. 4) You might want to consider filing a W-4V form with Social Security to have federal taxes withheld from your benefits (at 7%, 10%, 12%, or 22%) to avoid a big tax bill next year. 5) Double-check that Social Security has your correct mailing address to ensure you receive your 1099 form.

I had no idea I could have taxes withheld from my Social Security! That would be so much easier than owing a lump sum at tax time. I'll look into filing that W-4V form right away. Thank you!

THIS IS WHY I ALWAYS TELL PEOPLE TO JUST GET IT ONLINE!!! The paper mail system is so unreliable these days!

Thank you all for the helpful responses. I'll check my mySocialSecurity account in mid-January, and if it's not there, I'll watch for the mailed form in early February. I'm definitely concerned about the tax implications now - I had no idea so much of my Social Security could be taxable! I'll look into filing that W-4V form to have taxes withheld going forward. This has been very educational!
