Social Security approval letter received but no payment amount - when will my January 2025 benefits start?

Just got my approval letter for Social Security retirement benefits (yay!) but I'm confused about next steps. I requested a January 2025 start date during my online application, and they sent confirmation that I'm approved, but there's no information about how much I'll actually receive each month. Do they send a separate letter with the benefit amount? Also, when should I expect my first payment to arrive? Will it come in January or February? My 67th birthday is in December 2024 so I'm starting right at my full retirement age if that matters. I'm trying to budget for next year and it would really help to know the timeline and amount. This is my first time dealing with SS retirement and I'm a bit lost!

Yes, they'll send you a separate Award Letter that shows your payment amount. It usually comes within 2-4 weeks after the approval notice. Your first payment will be deposited on the 3rd Wednesday of February 2025 since you're starting benefits in January. (Social Security pays a month behind - so January benefits come in February.) The payment date depends on your birth date: if you were born on the 1st-10th, you get paid on the 2nd Wednesday; 11th-20th is 3rd Wednesday; 21st-31st is 4th Wednesday of each month. Exception is if you were also getting benefits before May 1997, then you get paid on the 3rd of each month.

Thank you so much for the clear explanation! So I'll be waiting for this Award Letter before I know exactly how much I'll receive? I hope it comes soon. I'm born on the 19th, so sounds like I'll be in that 3rd Wednesday group. Really appreciate your help!

got my award letter like 2 weeks after approval. shows the exact $$$ youll get. they do the payments based on birthdate - mines the 27th so i get paid 4th wed each month. check ur myssa account online it might show up there first

0 coins

Oh that's good to know! I'll keep checking my online account too. I've been logging in but so far it just shows I'm approved, not the amount. Fingers crossed it updates soon!

MAKE SURE to check the award letter carefully when you get it!! They calculated mine wrong last year and I had to wait almost 3 months to get it fixed!!! They didn't count 2 years of my work history and it reduced my benefit by $310!!! Call them immediately if anything looks wrong because the longer you wait the harder it is to fix!!! And KEEP COPIES of everything they send you!!!

0 coins

Oh no, that sounds like a nightmare! Thanks for the warning - I'll definitely review everything carefully. I worked part-time for a few years while helping care for my mom, so I need to make sure those earnings were counted properly.

My husband just went through this. The award letter came about 10 days after the approval letter. It'll tell you the exact amount. Since you're starting in January, your first payment will come in February (they pay a month behind). Our first payment showed up right on schedule!

0 coins

Did they get your husband's amount right? They messed up mine and it was SUCH a headache to fix!! Took forever!

To add to what others have said - your benefit amount should be calculated based on your highest 35 years of earnings (adjusted for inflation). Since you're starting exactly at your Full Retirement Age (FRA) of 67, you'll receive 100% of your Primary Insurance Amount (PIA). The Award Letter will show your exact benefit amount, and it typically arrives 2-3 weeks after the approval notice. Your January 2025 benefit will be paid in February 2025, and payments will continue monthly after that. If you haven't already, I recommend creating a my Social Security account at ssa.gov/myaccount where you can view your earnings history, estimated benefits, and eventually your payment information. This is also where you can set up or change direct deposit information if needed. Congratulations on your retirement!

Thanks for the detailed information! I do have a mySocialSecurity account - that's how I applied online. I've checked my earnings record before and everything looked accurate, so hopefully my benefit calculation will be correct. It's reassuring to know I'll get the full PIA amount since I waited until 67.

I went through this exact situation last year. Getting the approval letter is just step one, then you wait for the award letter with the actual payment amount. But trying to reach someone at Social Security to ask questions was IMPOSSIBLE. I spent 3 days trying to get through on the phone just to confirm my payment date. I finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an actual SSA agent in under 20 minutes after I'd been trying for days. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU. It was totally worth it because I needed to verify some information about my payment schedule. Much better than wasting hours on hold or getting disconnected.

0 coins

did you have to give them a lot of personal info? seems sketchy to use a third party just to talk to social security

0 coins

@randomuser382 Not at all sketchy. They just help you bypass the phone wait times. You still talk directly to SSA yourself. I was skeptical too but it worked great when I needed to confirm my payment schedule. Way better than waiting on hold for hours or getting disconnected repeatedly.

0 coins

That's interesting - I might keep that service in mind if I run into trouble. I've been pretty frustrated with the phone system in the past when I called with questions before applying.

my mom just got her first payment and she said it took almost 6 weeks to get the award letter after the approval one. check ur bank account on the payment date even if u havent gotten the letter yet cuz sometimes they deposit the money before all the paperwork catches up

0 coins

Good advice, thanks! I'll definitely keep an eye on my bank account in February. 6 weeks seems like a long wait for the award letter though - I was hoping to have the information sooner for budgeting purposes.

One more important thing: if you're planning to work while collecting benefits in 2025, be aware that although you're at FRA, you need to report any earnings to SSA. For people at FRA or older, there's no earnings limit that would reduce benefits, but SSA still needs to know about the income for tax purposes. You can report wages through your my Social Security account online.

0 coins

That's really helpful! I might do some part-time consulting work next year, so I'll make sure to report that. It's a relief to know it won't reduce my benefits since I'll be at FRA.

also check ur medicare part b if ur signed up for that... they take it out of ur ss payment automatically and the award letter will show that deduction

0 coins

Good point! Yes, I did sign up for Medicare Part B when I applied for Social Security. I'm glad the award letter will show that deduction so I can see the net amount I'll actually receive.

Hi there! I'm pretty new to this community but wanted to share my recent experience since it sounds very similar to yours. I just went through this exact process a few months ago when I applied for my benefits to start in October 2024. The approval letter came first (like yours), then about 3 weeks later I got the award letter with my actual benefit amount. What really helped me was logging into my mySocialSecurity account every few days - the payment information actually showed up there about a week before the physical award letter arrived in the mail. One thing I wish someone had told me earlier: the award letter will show your gross benefit amount, but then list all the deductions (like Medicare Part B if you signed up for it). So don't be surprised if the "net payment amount" is lower than what you might have estimated online. Also, since you mentioned budgeting - I found it helpful to set up direct deposit right away through the online account if you haven't already. The payments are very reliable once they start! Congratulations on your retirement! This community has been such a great resource for navigating all these new processes.

Hi Dmitri! Thank you so much for sharing your recent experience - it's incredibly helpful to hear from someone who just went through this exact same process! I really appreciate the tip about checking the online account regularly since the information might show up there first. That gives me something to do while I'm anxiously waiting for the award letter to arrive. Your point about the gross vs. net amount is really important too. I did sign up for Medicare Part B, so I was expecting some deductions, but it's good to be mentally prepared that the actual deposit amount might be different from what I calculated based on the online estimators. I do have direct deposit set up already, which is a relief. It sounds like you've had a smooth experience with the payments being reliable once they started - that's reassuring! Thanks again for taking the time to share your experience. It's so nice to connect with others who understand exactly what this process is like. This community really is amazing!

Hi Anastasia! Welcome to the community and congratulations on your Social Security approval! I'm relatively new here myself, but I've been reading through everyone's responses and wanted to add my own experience from when I applied last year. Just to echo what others have said - you'll definitely get that award letter with your exact benefit amount, and it should arrive within the next 2-3 weeks. Since you're starting benefits in January 2025 and you're born on the 19th, you'll be paid on the third Wednesday of each month starting in February 2025 (since they pay a month behind). One thing I found really helpful was keeping a little notebook to track all the dates and documents as they came in. The whole process can feel overwhelming at first, but once you get that award letter and see your first payment, it becomes much more routine. Also, since you mentioned budgeting - if you're planning to have taxes withheld from your Social Security payments, you can set that up through your online account once everything is finalized. It's optional but something to consider for next year's tax planning. Best of luck with everything, and don't hesitate to ask if you have more questions as you go through this process!

0 coins

Hi Jessica! Thank you so much for the warm welcome and congratulations! I really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience and advice. The notebook idea is brilliant - I've already been feeling a bit scattered trying to keep track of all the information and dates, so I'm definitely going to start doing that. Your point about tax withholding is something I hadn't even thought about yet, but you're absolutely right that I should consider it for tax planning purposes. I'll make sure to look into that option once I get my award letter and everything is set up. It's so reassuring to hear from people like you who have recently been through this same process. Everyone in this community has been incredibly helpful and welcoming. I'm feeling much more confident about navigating all of this now! Thank you again for the encouragement and practical tips. I'll definitely reach out if I have more questions as things progress!

Hi Anastasia! I'm also new to this community and just wanted to say congratulations on your Social Security approval! I'm currently 65 and considering when to apply for my own benefits, so reading through all these detailed responses has been incredibly educational. The information everyone shared about the timeline - waiting 2-3 weeks for the award letter, payments coming a month behind, and the birth date payment schedule - is exactly the kind of practical detail I needed to understand. I had no idea about the birth date payment system before reading this! I'm particularly grateful for the tips about checking your mySocialSecurity account regularly and keeping careful records. It sounds like staying organized and proactive really makes a difference in navigating this process smoothly. Thank you for asking such thorough questions that have helped all of us learn! This community is clearly full of knowledgeable and helpful people. Best wishes for receiving your award letter soon and getting everything finalized for your January start date!

Since you're 65 and thinking about when to apply, you've got some great timing flexibility ahead of you. I'm really impressed by how detailed and helpful everyone's responses have been. As someone who's still a few years away from retirement, reading through all these insights about award letters, payment schedules, and the birth date system has been incredibly educational. I had no idea there was so much to know about the timing and logistics! The tip about checking your mySocialSecurity account regularly seems especially valuable - it sounds like information often shows up there before the physical mail arrives. And I love the suggestion about keeping a notebook to track all the documents and dates. Organization definitely seems key to managing this process smoothly. I hope your award letter arrives soon and everything goes exactly as planned with your January start date. It's wonderful that you asked such great questions that have helped educate all of us! This community really seems like an amazing resource for navigating these important life transitions. Best of luck with everything!

Hi Mia! Thank you so much for the warm congratulations and welcome! You're absolutely right - getting that approval confirmation was such a huge relief after months of wondering and planning. I'm so glad this whole conversation has been educational for you too, even though you're still a few years out from retirement. It's really smart of you to start learning about these details now - I wish I had understood more about the process earlier! The birth date payment system and all the timing logistics were completely new to me. Everyone here has been incredibly generous with sharing their knowledge and real-world experiences. The suggestion about the notebook has already been so helpful for me, and I've been checking my online account daily now (maybe a bit obsessively!). It's wonderful to connect with other community members who are at different stages of this journey. Thank you for taking the time to share such encouraging words! This community really is amazing, and I'm so grateful to have found such a supportive group of people who understand exactly what this process involves. Hi Anastasia! I'm also pretty new to this community and wanted to add my congratulations on getting your Social Security approval! What an exciting milestone. I've been reading through all these responses and wow - there's so much helpful information here that I never would have known. The detail about payments being based on birth dates and coming a month behind is exactly the kind of practical stuff that's so important to understand but isn't always clear upfront. One thing I wanted to mention that I don't think anyone has brought up yet - make sure to keep that approval letter in a safe place along with the award letter when it comes. I've heard from friends that sometimes you need to reference those documents later for other purposes (like Medicare questions or if you ever need to contact SSA about your account). Also, since you mentioned budgeting, it might be worth reaching out to your bank to let them know you'll be receiving regular Social Security deposits starting in February. Some banks have special services or accounts for retirees that might be beneficial. Hope your award letter arrives soon! This community has been such a great learning experience already.

Hi Freya! Thank you so much for the congratulations and the warm welcome to the community! I really appreciate you taking the time to share those additional practical tips - they're exactly the kind of details I wouldn't have thought of on my own. You're absolutely right about keeping those documents safe - I'll definitely make sure to store both the approval and award letters somewhere secure where I can easily find them later. It makes sense that they might be needed for reference with Medicare or other SSA questions down the road. The tip about contacting my bank is really smart too! I hadn't considered that they might have special services for retirees. I'll definitely give them a call once I get my award letter and know exactly when to expect the deposits. It's always better to give them a heads up about regular incoming payments. I'm so grateful for how welcoming and knowledgeable everyone in this community has been. Between all the helpful responses, I'm feeling much more prepared and confident about this whole process now. Thanks again for adding your valuable insights to the conversation!

Hi Anastasia! Welcome to the community and huge congratulations on your Social Security approval! I'm also relatively new here but wanted to share what I learned from my own recent experience since it sounds very similar to yours. I applied for benefits to start this past September and went through the exact same waiting period you're experiencing now. The approval letter came first (just like yours), and then about 2.5 weeks later I received my award letter with the actual dollar amount. What really helped ease my anxiety was checking my mySocialSecurity account every few days - the payment information actually appeared there about a week before the physical letter arrived. Since you're born on the 19th and starting in January 2025, you'll be paid on the third Wednesday of each month starting in February. I'm in the same birth date range, so I can confirm the third Wednesday payments are very reliable once they begin. One thing that caught me off guard was seeing all the deductions itemized on the award letter - Medicare Part B, any tax withholding you might have requested, etc. The net amount was different than what I had estimated, so just be prepared for that when budgeting. Everyone here has given you excellent advice about keeping records and staying organized. This community has been such a lifesaver for navigating all these new processes! Best of luck with everything!

Hi Eli! Thank you so much for the congratulations and for sharing your recent experience - it's incredibly reassuring to hear from someone who just went through this exact same process! Knowing that your award letter arrived in about 2.5 weeks and that the information showed up online first really helps set my expectations. I'm definitely going to keep checking my mySocialSecurity account regularly now. It's good to know that even though I might feel like I'm obsessively checking, it actually could pay off by showing the information earlier than the mail delivery! Your point about the deductions is really important - I did sign up for Medicare Part B when I applied, so I was expecting some reduction from the gross amount, but it sounds like I should be prepared that the final number might still be different from what I calculated using the online estimators. Better to be pleasantly surprised than disappointed! Thank you for confirming the third Wednesday payment schedule too. It's so helpful to hear from someone who's actually receiving those payments and can vouch for their reliability. I'm really grateful for how welcoming and knowledgeable everyone in this community has been. Your experience gives me a lot of confidence that I'm on the right track! Thanks again for taking the time to share such detailed and helpful information.

Hi Anastasia! I'm also new to this community and wanted to congratulate you on your Social Security approval! What an exciting step toward retirement. I've been reading through all the responses here and I'm amazed by how much practical knowledge everyone has shared. As someone who's still a couple years away from applying myself, this entire conversation has been incredibly educational. I had no idea about things like the birth date payment schedule or that benefits are paid a month behind! The advice about checking your mySocialSecurity account regularly seems especially valuable - it sounds like the payment information often appears there before the physical award letter arrives in the mail. And I love all the tips about staying organized and keeping good records throughout the process. Since you mentioned you're trying to budget for next year, I hope your award letter arrives soon with all the details you need. From what everyone has shared, it sounds like you're right on track and should expect it within the next couple of weeks. Hi Anastasia! Welcome to the community and congratulations on your Social Security approval! I'm also pretty new here and wanted to share my experience since I just went through something very similar. I applied for my benefits to start in November 2024 and got my approval letter about 6 weeks ago. Just like you, I was anxiously waiting for the award letter with the actual payment amount! Mine took exactly 18 days to arrive after the approval letter, and it showed up in my mySocialSecurity account about 4 days before the physical letter came in the mail. Since you're born on the 19th, you'll definitely be in that third Wednesday payment group starting in February. I'm born on the 23rd so I get paid on the fourth Wednesday, and I can confirm the payments are very reliable once they start. One thing I wish I had known - when the award letter comes, it will show your gross benefit amount at the top, but then list all the deductions below (Medicare Part B, any tax withholding, etc.). So the actual deposit amount might be a bit different from what you're expecting based on online calculators. Just something to keep in mind for your budgeting! The whole process feels overwhelming at first, but once you get that award letter and see your first payment, it becomes much more routine. Everyone here has given you such great advice already. This community has been incredibly helpful for navigating all these new retirement processes!
