Need help getting 1099 for deceased father to file 2024 taxes - any advice?
Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a pickle. My father passed away recently and I need to file his 2024 tax returns. The problem is, I can't seem to get my hands on his 1099 form. Has anyone gone through this process before? Any advice on how to obtain the necessary documents for a deceased person's taxes? I'm feeling pretty overwhelmed here.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I went through something similar last year with my mom. First thing you should do is contact the IRS directly. They have a department that deals specifically with deceased taxpayers. You'll need to provide a death certificate and proof that you're the executor of the estate. It can take a while, but they should be able to provide you with copies of any 1099 forms filed under your father's SSN.

Thank you so much for the advice. I didn't even know where to start. Do you remember how long the process took for you?

It took about 6-8 weeks for me, but I've heard it can vary. Just make sure you start the process ASAP to give yourself plenty of time before the filing deadline.

This is solid advice. I'd also recommend checking with any financial institutions your father had accounts with. They might be able to provide copies of 1099s directly.

I found a method to get someone on the phone at the IRS. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's the URL: https://www.claimyr.com

Sounds kinda sketchy. Is this legit? Has anyone else tried it?

I get the skepticism, but it's totally legit. I was desperate after being on hold for hours and it actually worked. Saved me a ton of time and frustration.

Have you tried reaching out to your father's employer (if he was still working)? They should be able to provide you with his W-2 or 1099 info. Also, check his email if you have access - many companies send tax forms electronically now.

That's a great idea, I hadn't thought of checking his email. I'll give that a try, thanks!

Listen up, cause I'm bout to drop some knowledge on y'all 🧠Dealing with a deceased person's taxes is no joke, but here's what you gotta do: 1. Get yourself appointed as the executor or personal representative of the estate. You'll need this to have any authority. 2. Obtain multiple copies of the death certificate. You're gonna need these puppies for EVERYTHING. 3. Contact the IRS and request a Tax Transcript. This'll show all reported income under your dad's SSN. 4. Reach out to any known income sources (employers, banks, investment firms) and request copies of tax documents. 5. File Form 56 with the IRS to notify them you're acting as the fiduciary. 6. If you can't get all the info, file Form 4506-T to request copies of missing tax documents. 7. Don't forget to check state tax obligations too! Remember, you've got this! It's a process, but take it step by step and you'll get through it. And don't be afraid to call in a pro if you're feeling overwhelmed. Sometimes paying for expertise is worth the peace of mind.

Just a heads up, make sure you're aware of the filing deadlines for estates. They can be different from regular tax deadlines depending on the situation. Don't wanna get hit with late fees on top of everything else!

Man, the government doesn't make this easy, do they? It's like they want us to mess up so they can collect more fees. 🙄 Good luck OP, hope you get it sorted!

Hey OP, just wanted to say I'm sorry for your loss. Dealing with all this bureaucratic stuff while grieving must be tough. Remember to take care of yourself too, okay? 💖
