How to report mother's death to Social Security without waiting 2+ hours on hold? Death benefits question
Just found out my mother passed away last week and I need to report her death to Social Security ASAP. The cremation service apparently knew about her passing on November 11th, but nobody told me until yesterday! I called SSA this morning to stop her monthly payments and the automated system said the wait time is over TWO HOURS! Is there any other number I can call with a shorter wait? I'm worried they'll keep sending payments and then demand the money back later. Also, how soon can I apply for the death benefit? The funeral home mentioned something about a $356 payment but said I need to contact SS directly about it. This is all so overwhelming right now.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Unfortunately, there's no special number with shorter wait times. You MUST report the death as soon as possible - they will want any payments back that were sent after her passing. The $255 (not $356) death benefit is available to a surviving spouse or child. You'll need her SS number, death certificate (when available), and your own identification when you call. Alternatively, you can visit your local office in person - sometimes that's faster if you make an appointment online.

•Thank you for the correction on the amount. I don't have her death certificate yet - the cremation service said it'll take another week. Will SSA accept the notification without it? I'm her only child and was named executor in her will if that matters.

When my father passed in January, I was on hold for 3+ hours trying to report his death. I finally found Claimyr (claimyr.com) which got me connected to a Social Security agent in under 10 minutes! They have a video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU. Completely worth it to avoid the wait, especially during such a difficult time. The agent helped me report the death and apply for the lump sum death benefit in the same call.

•Thank you for this suggestion - I'll check out the website. Did you need the death certificate for the initial call or was the funeral home's information enough?

•The agent took the report based on the funeral home information, but I still needed to bring the death certificate to my local office later to complete everything. They put a note in the system though, which stopped further payments immediately.

the $255 death benefit is a joke anyway...doesn't even cover a fraction of funeral costs these days

•Right?? My grandmother's funeral was $11,500 last year. The $255 barely covered the thank you cards we sent out. It hasn't been increased since like the 1950s or something ridiculous.

SSA really needs to know about deaths ASAP to prevent overpayments. Here's the complete process you should follow: 1. Report the death (phone, in-person at local office) 2. Return any payments received after death date 3. Apply for the lump-sum death benefit if eligible (surviving spouse or dependent child) 4. Check if you're eligible for survivor benefits As executor, you'll need: - Your mother's Social Security number - Your own identification - Date of death confirmation from funeral home - Eventually the death certificate If SSA sends a payment after her death, do NOT cash/deposit it. They will detect the death through the death certificate registration eventually and will demand repayment of any incorrect payments.

•Thank you for this detailed information. I'm definitely concerned about checks being automatically deposited since her SS went directly to her bank account. Should I also notify her bank?

•Yes, absolutely notify her bank as soon as possible. If an SS payment is deposited after her death date, the bank is required to return it to the Treasury once they're aware of the death. This prevents you from having to handle repayment issues later.

Your best bet is to visit the local SSA office. Call center wait times are INSANE lately with all the COLA announcements for 2026. I tried calling about my disability review last month and gave up after 1.5 hours on hold!! The in-person wait isn't great either but at least you know you'll talk to someone that day.

•Local offices require appointments now in most locations - you can't just walk in. I learned this the hard way last month when dealing with my husband's retirement application. Had to make an appointment online and wait 3 weeks for an opening.

•Seriously?? When did they change that policy? I walked in to my local office just before covid without an appointment. Everything keeps getting worse with ssa services!!

Just to clarify about the Death Benefit - the official name is the Lump Sum Death Payment (LSDP) and it's exactly $255. It can only be paid to: 1. A surviving spouse who was living with the deceased, or 2. A surviving spouse not living with the deceased but eligible for certain survivor benefits, or 3. A surviving child eligible for benefits on the deceased's record As her child, you should be eligible if no spouse is involved. You must apply within 2 years of the death.

•That's helpful, thank you. There's no surviving spouse, so it sounds like I qualify. Is the application for this separate from reporting the death or can they be done in the same call?

•You can do both in the same call. The representative will first process the death report to stop benefits, then they can take your application for the LSDP immediately after. Just be sure to specifically ask about applying for the lump sum death payment, as sometimes they don't automatically offer it.

When my mom died I waited like 3 weeks to call them and they had already found out somehow?? Got a letter saying I needed to return the $1750 payment that went into her account after she died. So even if you can't reach them right away they'll probably find out through some government system.

•That's interesting - I wonder if the funeral home reports it directly? Though in my case they've known for almost a week and payments haven't stopped according to her bank statement I checked yesterday.

•Most local offices require appointments now, and they're often booked 2-3 weeks out. Calling is still necessary, even with the wait. OP should try to reach them by phone first to stop payments immediately, then follow up in person with documentation if needed.
