TWC reporting requirements: Do loans count as income when filing weekly payment requests?
I'm freaking out a little bit here. I just got approved for my TWC benefits last week and filed my first payment request yesterday. But today, my brother loaned me $2,500 to help with rent until my unemployment kicks in. Do I have to report this loan as income on my next payment request? Will TWC reduce my benefits because of it? I don't want to get hit with an overpayment later or be accused of fraud, but it's a LOAN not income, right? I'm going to pay my brother back once I'm receiving benefits regularly. Anyone know the official rule on this?

You don't need to report loans as income to TWC. When you request payment, they're asking about wages or income from work. Loans aren't considered income for unemployment purposes because they're not payment for services and you have to pay them back. Only report actual earnings from work (like part-time jobs) or income from self-employment activities during your payment request weeks.

•Thank you so much! That's a huge relief. It just seemed weird to suddenly have money in my account when I'd be claiming I made $0 that week.

Same thing happened to me last year! Don't worry about reporting loans. I borrowed money from my parents while waiting for my benefits and my TWC rep told me loans aren't reportable income.

No loans arent income. My cousin works at TWC and says people get confused about this all the time. They only care about WORK money not personal loans from family

•Are you 100% SURE about this? Because I've heard different things and don't wanna risk an OVERPAYMENT charge later! I read somewhere that ANY money coming in has to be reported! The TWC website is so VAGUE about these details and I've been on hold for THREE HOURS trying to ask someone directly!!!!

When I was on unemployment last winter, I took out a personal loan from my credit union and never reported it. The TWC payment request specifically asks about "work" and "earnings" - a loan is neither of those things. You only need to report if you actually performed work and earned money during your claim week.

This is actually a really common question, but the answer is simple. For TWC purposes, you only need to report income earned from work activities during your claim week. This includes: - Regular wages from part-time/full-time work - Self-employment income - Contract/gig work earnings - Commissions - Tips You do NOT report: - Loans (personal, bank, family, etc.) - Credit card advances - Gifts - Inheritance - Stimulus payments - Tax refunds The key distinction is whether the money represents payment for services/work you performed during the claim week. If it's not compensation for work, you generally don't report it.

•This is super helpful! I've been so nervous about making a mistake. So basically I only report money I EARN, not money I RECEIVE from other sources. That makes total sense.

i know how stressful this is!!! i tried for WEEKS to get someone on the phone at TWC to answer questions like this. kept getting busy signals or disconnected. finally someone told me about this service called Claimyr that got me through to a TWC agent in less than 10 minutes. you might want to check out their website at claimyr.com - they have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/V-IMvH88P1U?si=kNxmh025COIlIzKh they basically call TWC for you and connect you when they get through. saved me hours of redial hell. the agent confirmed loans are not reportable income for UI purposes.

•Does that actually work? I thought those services were scams

My friend got a bank loan while on unemployment and she didn't report it. No problems with her claim at all.

I swear the TWC system is DELIBERATELY CONFUSING just to trip people up!!! I had the exact same question last month about my student loan disbursement and spent DAYS trying to figure it out. The payment request just asks "did you work" and "did you earn money" - if it's a LOAN, you didn't EARN it, so logically it shouldn't count! But trying to get a straight answer from TWC is impossible!!

So this is slightly off-topic but when I was dealing with a reporting question like yours, I found it super helpful to check the TWC Claimant Handbook. They have a PDF version on their website that gets into the details of what counts as income. It specifically talks about reportable earnings being from services performed (aka work). Loans definitely don't qualify as that.

•Great suggestion! The Claimant Handbook is definitely a useful resource. To add to this, when you're completing your payment request, TWC specifically asks "Did you work?" and "Did you earn wages?" - receiving a loan doesn't involve working or earning wages, so it wouldn't be reported in your payment request. Keep in mind that while loans aren't reportable for unemployment purposes, different rules may apply for other government programs like SNAP or Medicaid.
