TWC payment timing question - how many weeks will first payment cover after Dec 10 request date?

My husband just filed for unemployment on Nov 28 after his construction company laid everyone off. The TWC rep told him his first payment request date is Sunday, December 10, and if he's eligible they'll process payment on December 18. We're trying to figure out our budget for Christmas and I'm confused about how many weeks that first payment will cover. Will it be for the time since he applied (Nov 28 - Dec 10)? Or just for the week before the payment request? And will there be a waiting week where he doesn't get paid? Sorry if these are dumb questions - this is our first time dealing with unemployment in Texas and we're pretty stressed about making rent in January.

The first payment request usually covers the two weeks prior to your request date. Since his payment request date is December 10, it should cover approximately November 26-December 9 (depending on how TWC assigned his specific biweekly schedule). Texas does have a waiting week, which is the first payable week of your claim. You won't receive payment for this week until after you've received three times your weekly benefit amount AND either returned to full-time work or exhausted your benefits. So the first payment will likely only include payment for one week, not two. When he does the payment request on December 10, the system will clearly show which specific dates he's requesting payment for. Make sure he has his work search activities documented for each week.

Thank you so much! That makes sense about the waiting week. So basically we should only expect payment for one week on that first payment. Do you know if the payment on the 18th would be direct deposit or does the first one always come on a debit card?

its gonna be 1 week only bcuz of waiting week just fyi. my husbnd went thru this last summer when oil field laid him off. first paymt was only for 1 week then after that you get the normal 2 weeks each time

This depends on when he last worked. Assuming his last day was right before he applied (around Nov 27th), here's how it typically works with TWC: 1. First week (roughly Nov 26-Dec 2) = Waiting week (no payment until later in his claim) 2. Second week (roughly Dec 3-9) = First payable week So the payment processed on Dec 18th would only be for ONE week of benefits. The waiting week payment comes much later in the claim process. Also important: Make sure your husband is completing at least 3 work search activities for EACH week and keeping detailed records. TWC is very strict about this and they do randomly audit people.

His last day was actually Nov 22 right before Thanksgiving. So would that change the dates at all? And yes, he's been applying to jobs every day since he's really worried about finding something quickly.

When I was on unemployment last year I remember being SOOO confused about when I'd actually get paid! It's crazy how they make this system so complicated!!!! My first payment only covered 1 week too because of that stupid waiting week rule. Such a ripoff honestly, like we're already broke and they make us wait even longer?! SMH

I've helped several people navigate TWC claims, and here's exactly what to expect: - His first payment request on Dec 10 will cover Nov 26-Dec 9 (as displayed in the TWC system) - However, the first week (Nov 26-Dec 2) is the "waiting week" and won't be paid initially - So payment processed on Dec 18 will only include Dec 3-9 - The "waiting week" gets paid later after he's received 3× his weekly benefit amount Direct deposit is fastest if he selected that option when applying. If he didn't choose direct deposit, they'll send a ReliaCard debit card which can take 7-10 days to arrive by mail. Pro tip: After submitting the payment request on Dec 10, he can call TWC Tele-Serv at 800-558-8321 to check his claim status. Unfortunately, getting through to TWC by phone is extremely difficult - busy signals and hours on hold are common.

The TWC phone lines are IMPOSSIBLE! I spent days trying to get through last month. Eventually used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to a TWC agent in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/V-IMvH88P1U?si=kNxmh025COIlIzKh It saved me so much stress - I was having a similar issue with payment confusion and needed to speak with someone. Just thought I'd share since it helped me a lot.

I've been on TWC benefits twice now and can confirm what others said - first payment will only be for one week because of the waiting week policy. Just make sure your husband requests payment exactly on December 10th - not before, not after. TWC is very strict about the payment request schedule and missing it can cause major delays.

Thank you for the reminder! I've put a big reminder on our calendar for the 10th. Is there a specific time of day he needs to do it, or just anytime that Sunday?

To answer your follow-up question about his last day being Nov 22 - that actually might change things slightly. TWC typically assigns your biweekly payment schedule based on your application date, not your last working day. Since he applied on Nov 28, his benefit period likely starts on Sunday, Nov 26. The system will show him exactly which dates he's certifying for when he logs in on Dec 10. Regarding payment methods: If he selected direct deposit during his application, the first payment will be deposited to his bank account. If he didn't choose direct deposit, they'll automatically send a TWC debit card (ReliaCard). The card typically takes 7-10 business days to arrive by mail after the first payment is processed.

He did select direct deposit so hopefully that will be quicker. Thanks so much for all this information, it really helps us know what to expect!

I filed last month and my experience was totally different from what people are saying. I got paid for BOTH weeks on my first payment request! No waiting week for me. Maybe they changed the rules? Or maybe it depends on why you got laid off?

The waiting week still exists in Texas, but there are some exceptions. If you were on a claim within the past year that had already served a waiting week, you wouldn't have to serve another one. Also, if you were on a disaster-related claim, waiting weeks are sometimes waived. Most standard unemployment claims still require serving the waiting week.
