TWC payment schedule confusion - will my next check cover 2 weeks?
I'm confused about how TWC distributes unemployment payments in Texas. I relocated from Connecticut about 2 years ago and just got laid off in December. Filed my initial claim on January 1st and received my first payment on January 17th. I can see my weekly benefit amount in my account, but I've only gotten one payment so far. My next payment request date is the 29th, and I'm wondering if that check will cover 2 weeks of benefits? In Connecticut the payment system worked differently, so I'm trying to understand the Texas schedule. Will I be getting a larger amount (covering multiple weeks) on the 29th, or just another single week payment? Sorry if this is a basic question, but I'm still learning how the Texas system works. Thanks for any help!

Welcome to Texas! Yes, TWC pays benefits every two weeks, so your payment on the 29th should cover two weeks if you've been filing your payment requests properly. When you request payment, you're actually requesting for the previous two weeks (the "claim period"). Make sure you're completing your work search requirements (minimum 3 activities per week) and reporting them correctly during your payment request, or your benefits could be delayed.

•Thanks for clarifying! That makes sense. So when I request payment on the 29th, I'll be asked about my work search activities for the previous two weeks, right? And then I should expect a payment that covers both those weeks?

The TWC system is SO confusing at first!! I moved from Illinois last year and was totally lost when I first filed. The key thing to remember is that you HAVE to request payment on your assigned date or within 7 days after it. If you miss that window, you probably won't get paid for those weeks!!! And YES, your payment will cover the 2 previous weeks, not the upcoming ones.

To add some clarification, TWC has a bi-weekly payment request schedule, but your first payment might have been for just one week depending on when your claim became effective. The system works like this: - Your claim has an effective date (usually the Sunday of the week you filed) - Your first payment request might only cover a partial period - After that, all payment requests cover the previous two weeks - Payment requests must be made every two weeks on your assigned day You can request payment through the TWC website or by calling Tele-Serv at 800-558-8321. Just make sure you have your work search activities documented - Texas requires at least 3 per week.

•I've been using Claimyr to get through to TWC when I have payment issues. The regular number is always busy, but Claimyr got me connected to an actual TWC agent in about 20 minutes. Saved me days of frustration! Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/V-IMvH88P1U?si=kNxmh025COIlIzKh - definitely worth checking out if you run into any payment problems.

•That's helpful to know, thanks! I've been keeping track of my work search activities in a spreadsheet so I don't forget anything when it's time to report.

BE CAREFUL with your payment request dates!!! They don't send reminders and if you miss it, you're in trouble. I put calendar reminders on my phone for every two weeks so I never forget. And btw the website is always glitchy on Mondays and Tuesdays when everyone is trying to request payment at once.

•THIS. I always do my requests late at night or super early in the morning to avoid the website crashes. Nothing worse than trying to file and getting booted out of the system over and over.

One more thing to be aware of - when you do your payment request on the 29th, the system will ask you questions about each week separately (work search activities, any earnings, whether you were able and available to work, etc.). Make sure you answer accurately for each specific week, as providing incorrect information could result in an overpayment determination later. After you submit your request, you should receive your payment within 2-3 business days if you're using direct deposit. It might take longer if you're getting a debit card or paper check.

•This is all so helpful! I'm set up with direct deposit, so hopefully I'll see the payment fairly quickly after I submit my request. I'll make sure to answer all the questions accurately for each week.

I noticed you mentioned getting laid off in December but filing on January 1st. Just to make sure you're maximizing your benefits - if you were eligible for unemployment in December, you may want to check if your claim was backdated properly to include those weeks. If not, you might have lost some potential benefits. You can see your claim effective date on your TWC account or determination letter. If there's an issue with the date, you might need to contact TWC directly to have it corrected.

•Good point! I was laid off on December 28th, so there were only a few days between the layoff and when I filed. I'll double-check my effective date to make sure everything is correct. Thanks for looking out for me!
