TWC benefit amounts confusion - $425 weekly but payment schedule unclear?

I just got approved for Texas unemployment benefits last week and my determination letter shows $425 as my weekly benefit amount. What's confusing me is how TWC actually pays this out. Do they pay $425 every two weeks (meaning I'd get $425 when I submit my bi-weekly payment request) or do they pay $850 every two weeks (so the full weekly amount x2)? The website is super confusing on this and I can't get through on the phone. I really need to budget properly since I was laid off from my warehouse job and have rent coming up soon. Thanks for any help!

You'll receive $850 every two weeks (minus taxes if you opted for withholding). TWC pays your full weekly benefit amount ($425) for each week you're eligible, and since payment requests cover two weeks, you get both weeks paid together. Just make sure you're completing your work search requirements (minimum 3 per week) and correctly reporting any earnings during your payment request periods!

Thank you so much! That's a huge relief. I was worried they meant $425 bi-weekly total. And yes, I've already started on my work search activities - applying for at least 4 jobs per week just to be safe!

When I first got unemployment they actually skipped my first payment and I only got paid for the second week! Check ur determination letter carefully to see if there's a waiting week mentioned.

Oh no, that's concerning. I didn't notice anything about a waiting week, but I'll check the letter again. Does anyone know if Texas still has the waiting week in 2025?

Yes, Texas still has the waiting week requirement in 2025. The first eligible week of your claim is your "waiting week" and you won't get paid for it UNTIL you've returned to work full-time for 6 weeks OR have received 3 times your weekly benefit amount in benefits. So basically, you'll eventually get that money, but not right away. To directly answer your original question: TWC pays $425 for EACH eligible week, so your payment requests should result in $850 payments (assuming you're eligible for both weeks and don't have any deductions). The payment request system asks about 2 weeks at a time, which is why you request every two weeks, but you're being paid your full weekly amount for each week.

Thanks for the detailed explanation. I didn't realize I'd have to wait so long to get that first week's payment. Definitely helps with budgeting to know exactly what to expect!

My experince with TWC has been HORRIBLE!! I got approved for $470 weekly but theyre only paying me $340 every two weeks!!! They say its becuz i have deductions but cant explain what those r. been calling for 2 weks and cant get thru to anyoen who can help - its a NIGHTMARE!!!!

That sounds frustrating! The major deductions would be: 1) Taxes (if you elected to have them withheld), 2) Child support obligations, 3) Overpayment recovery from previous claims, or 4) Reported earnings from part-time work. Check your payment statement on the TWC portal - it should break down any deductions.

just to add to whats been said - make sure u certify on time every 2 weeks! if u miss ur request date u might have to call in and thats a huge headache

Good point! I've already set calendar reminders for my request dates. My first one is this Sunday.

I had the same question when I first started getting benefits last month! And yes, it's $425 per week, so $850 every two weeks (minus taxes if you chose to have them withheld). Also be aware that if you report ANY income during your payment request, even a small amount from a part-time gig, they'll reduce your benefit amount for that week accordingly. They don't just cut you off completely unless you earn more than your weekly benefit amount.

That's good to know about partial earnings. I might pick up some gig work while I'm job hunting, so I'll make sure to report it correctly.

I spent DAYS trying to reach TWC about a similar question and kept getting busy signals or disconnected. Then I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual TWC rep in about 20 minutes. They have a demo video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/V-IMvH88P1U?si=kNxmh025COIlIzKh. Totally worth it to get my benefits question resolved instead of stressing for weeks.

Yes! It worked for me when I was desperate to ask about my benefit calculation. The system basically keeps calling TWC for you until it gets through, then connects you. Saved me hours of redial frustration.

When I was on unemploymnt last yr they would always pay me on Tuesdays after i did my request on Sunday. sometimes it took til Wednesday if there was a holiday. Hope that helps!

Thanks! It's helpful to know when to expect the deposit. I'll keep an eye on my account Tuesday/Wednesday after I submit my first request.
