PA UC system asking why I worked this week when I didn't - weekly claim confusion
I'm so confused with my PA UC weekly claim! Just filed for my first week and got this weird question asking me to "explain why you worked this week" - but I DIDN'T work at all! My last day was Saturday April 22nd, which is what I wrote in the box. Did I mess something up? Will this delay my payment? The system accepted my claim but now I'm worried they think I worked when I didn't. Has anyone else had this weird question pop up?

•That makes me feel a little better. Did you still get paid on time when this happened to you? I'm stressing about rent coming up.

The system is asking this because your last day of work falls within the claim week you're filing for. PA UC weeks run Sunday-Saturday. If your last day was April 22nd (a Saturday), then that's technically within the first claim week. You did the right thing by explaining it was your last day of work. Your payment shouldn't be affected, but the system needs to know about any work/earnings during each claim week.

•Oh! That makes sense now. So since my last day was a Saturday, it falls in that week. Thanks for explaining - the wording just really confused me!

Went thru something similar last month. The PA UC system is weird with dates sometimes. For your next weekly filing it should be normal without asking that question again since you'll be fully unemployed for the whole week.

This is perfectly normal for your first week filing. You need to report ANY work performed during a claim week, even if it was your last day. The question appears because the system detected a discrepancy between your application date and first filing date. Your payment might be slightly reduced for that first week depending on how much you earned on that Saturday, but future weeks should process normally as long as you aren't working. Make sure you're completing your work search activities too - PA requires you to apply to at least 2 jobs each week and track it in your dashboard.

•Thanks for the detailed explanation! Yes, I've been applying to jobs and logging them. So my first payment might be a bit less than normal because of that Saturday? That's good to know.

OMG the PA unemployment system is a nightmare!!! I had THE EXACT same issue last year and ended up with a 3-week delay because I answered wrong! I kept calling and calling and getting nothing but busy signals and disconnects. I finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an actual person at UC in like 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2. The agent explained that the system was confused because my last day of work fell in the first claim week and fixed it right away! Would have saved me weeks of stress if I'd known about it sooner.

•is that service legit? sounds too good to be true honestly. the pa uc phone lines are literally impossible to get through

•100% legit. I was skeptical too but was desperate after 2 weeks of trying to call. They don't handle your claim or anything, they just get you through the phone system to talk to a real UC agent. Saved my sanity honestly.

THE PA UC SYSTEM IS LITERALLY DESIGNED TO CONFUSE PEOPLE!!! They WANT you to make mistakes so they can deny benefits!! I bet they're hoping you'll get frustrated and give up. This happened to me and they ended up putting an "open issue" on my claim for 6 WEEKS before finally paying me. The system is BROKEN by design!!!

•While the system definitely has problems, this particular question is actually standard procedure when your last day of work falls within a claim week. It's not a trick - they just need to know about any work/earnings during each week you're claiming benefits.

UPDATE: Just wanted to let everyone know my payment went through fine! It was slightly reduced from what I expected (they deducted the Saturday I worked), but otherwise everything processed correctly. For anyone with the same issue - if your last day of work falls in your first claim week, just explain that in the box and you should be good.

•Glad it worked out! Future weeks should be smooth sailing now.
