PA UC login nightmare - system says my SSN is active but keeps locking me out after password reset
Just got laid off last week and I'm already dealing with a nightmare trying to file for unemployment! When I tried to create a new PA UC account, the system tells me my Social Security Number is already active (from when I filed 3 years ago). So I tried the 'Forgot Username/Password' option, created a new password, but when I try to log in it keeps saying my password is incorrect! After 3 attempts it locks me out completely. I've tried this cycle FOUR times now and I'm going insane. Has anyone else experienced this? How did you fix it? I need to get my claim started ASAP because I've got bills piling up and my savings won't last long.

•Ugh, that's what I was afraid of. Been trying to call for 2 days straight and can't get through. Just busy signals or that automated message saying they're experiencing high call volume. Any tricks to actually reaching a human?

This is a common issue with the PA UC system. When you have an existing account from a previous benefit year, the system sometimes gets confused when you try to reset credentials. Here's what you need to do: 1. Make sure you're using the correct website (benefits.uc.pa.gov) 2. Try using a different browser (Chrome or Firefox work best) 3. Clear your browser cache completely 4. Wait 24 hours after your last lockout before attempting again 5. When prompted for your SSN, make sure you're entering it without dashes If none of that works, you'll unfortunately need to speak with a representative directly. Their system needs to manually reset something on the backend.

•Thank you for these detailed steps! I've tried different browsers and clearing cache but no luck. I'll give it 24 hours before trying again. In the meantime I guess I'll keep calling and hoping to get through.

I had this exact problem when I got laid off in January! So frustrating. The issue turned out to be that my old account from 2022 was still active in their system, but something got corrupted in my login credentials. When I finally got through to someone, they told me there was a "flag" on my account that was preventing the password reset from working properly. The only way I fixed it was by speaking to an actual UC representative. They had to clear something on their end before I could properly reset my login.

•THIS IS WHY THE PA UC SYSTEM IS COMPLETELY BROKEN! They expect us to file online but then make it IMPOSSIBLE to actually use the system!! And then good luck getting through on the phone - I spent WEEKS trying to reach someone. It's almost like they WANT us to give up trying to claim benefits we're entitled to. Makes my blood boil.

Have you tried going to your local PA CareerLink office? Sometimes they can help with unemployment login issues or at least get you connected to someone who can help. I know it's not ideal but might be faster than waiting on hold forever.

•I didn't even think about CareerLink! There's one about 20 minutes from me. I'll try them tomorrow morning. Thanks for the suggestion!

Did anyone suggest using the PA UC chat feature instead of calling? I had luck with that last year when I couldn't log in. It's sometimes easier to get through that way during non-peak hours (try early morning like 7:30am when they first open). Just keep in mind that for security reasons, they can only reset certain account settings by phone, not chat.

•I tried the chat twice but got stuck in a queue of "more than 100 people" both times and eventually got disconnected. I'll try the super early morning approach tomorrow though - that's a good tip!

After dealing with PA unemployment for years, I've learned a few things about their account system. If your account shows as 'active' but won't let you reset the password properly, it's usually because: 1. Your previous benefit year hasn't fully expired in their system 2. There's a data mismatch between what you're entering and what's in their records 3. There might be an open issue or overpayment from your previous claim Unfortunately, only a UC representative can see and fix these specific issues. Keep trying the phone lines at 8:00 AM exactly when they open. That's typically when you have the best chance of getting through.

•Thanks for the explanation! I did have a benefit year that would have ended around 6 months ago, so maybe that's causing issues. I'll try calling right at 8 AM tomorrow.

I spent TWO WEEKS trying to get into my account with the EXACT same problem!! The system is COMPLETELY BROKEN!! When I finally got through, the rep told me they had to manually reset something called an "identity verification flag" that was stuck on my account from my previous claim. But getting through on the phone was impossible - busy signals for DAYS!!! I finally used that Claimyr service someone mentioned above and got through in about 4 hours. Worth every penny because I was about to lose my mind!!!

•That's really helpful to know about the identity verification flag. That could definitely be my issue since I remember having to verify my identity last time. I've been having no luck on the phone, so I might check out that service if CareerLink can't help tomorrow.

Just wanted to follow up - were you able to get this resolved? If you're still struggling, there's one more thing you can try. Sometimes the system has trouble with accounts that have been dormant for a specific period (2-3 years). In those cases, they sometimes need to do a full account recovery rather than just a password reset. When you call, specifically ask them to check if you need an "account recovery" rather than just a password reset. It's a different process on their end.

•UPDATE: Finally got this fixed! I went to CareerLink and they couldn't directly help with the login issue, but they got me connected to a UC rep through their direct line. Turns out I had an identity verification flag AND an unresolved issue from my previous claim that was preventing the system from letting me back in. The rep had to clear both issues before I could reset my password properly. Now I'm back in and have filed my initial claim. Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions!!

•That's awesome news! Glad you got it sorted out. CareerLink's direct line to UC reps is such a hidden gem - I wish more people knew about that option. It's crazy that it took both an identity verification flag AND an unresolved issue to cause all that trouble, but at least you're finally able to move forward with your claim. Hope your benefits get processed quickly!

•So glad you got it resolved @StarSurfer! This whole thread is going to be super helpful for others dealing with the same nightmare. The CareerLink direct line tip is gold - I had no idea they could connect you directly to UC reps. Definitely saving this info in case I ever run into login issues again. The PA UC system really needs an overhaul, but at least there are workarounds when you know where to look!
