Got unexpected PA UC overpayment letter for $2100 from 2021 - anyone else?
So I'm freaking out right now. I stopped collecting PA unemployment back in August 2021 when I found a job. Never filed another claim after that. Today (March 2025) I opened my mail to find a lovely surprise from PA UC claiming I owe them $2800 for weeks they say I collected but NEVER DID. The letter says I got benefits for September-October 2021, but I was already working full-time by then! I never filed for those weeks at all. Has anyone else suddenly gotten random overpayment notices from 3+ years ago this week? This feels like some kind of system glitch or something. I'm worried they'll garnish my wages if I don't figure this out fast.

Yes!! I just got one yesterday for $3400 from late 2021. I think there might be some kind of system audit happening at PA UC right now. Mine claims I was overpaid for weeks I'm 100% sure I never even filed for. I was already working by then too. Call them ASAP to dispute it - you only have 15 days from the date on the letter to file an appeal.

•Oh thank god it's not just me! Did you call them already? I've been trying all morning but can't get through. All I get is the busy signal. How am I supposed to appeal if I can't even reach a human?

•This definitely sounds like a system issue if multiple people are reporting the same problem with overpayment notices from 2021. PA UC sometimes runs batch audits that can trigger these notices. Keep detailed records of your employment during those dates - pay stubs from that time period will be your best evidence when appealing.

After dealing with PA unemployment for years, I've learned these bulk overpayment notices happen every so often. It's usually because they're auditing old claims and their system flags things incorrectly. You MUST appeal within 15 days though - that deadline is strictly enforced! If you miss it, you'll have a much harder time getting it resolved. Bring documentation showing: 1. Your last date of UC benefits (payment history) 2. Your employment start date (offer letter/first paystub) 3. Any communication confirming you stopped filing If you need to talk to a human at UC (which you definitely do), I discovered a service called Claimyr that actually connects you to UC agents without the endless busy signals. Saved me hours of redial hell during my overpayment issue last year. Their site is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2

It's legit - they use some kind of tech that keeps dialing for you and grabs a spot in the queue when it opens. I was skeptical too but it worked when I had an overpayment issue. And right now with all these notices going out, the regular phone lines are probably completely jammed.

•I'm going to try this Claimyr thing tomorrow. I spent FOUR HOURS today redialing and never got through. I'm starting to panic because the appeal deadline on my letter is next Friday. I'll let everyone know if it works for me!

dont bother calling PA UC a million times!! go directly to appealing, you can do it online through your dashboard or by mail. i wasted 3 days trying to call about my overpayment before someone told me i should just appeal directly. saved myself so much frustration!

•While filing an appeal is definitely important, I strongly recommend also trying to speak with a representative. When I received an incorrect overpayment notice in 2024, the UC representative was able to flag my account with notes that helped expedite my appeal process. They also explained exactly what documentation I needed to provide. For your appeal, make sure you include: - Exact dates you stopped claiming benefits - Employment verification showing when you started working - Copies of your last legitimate claim filings - A clear timeline of events Appeals are currently taking about 4-6 weeks to process in Pennsylvania, so getting this submitted quickly is critical.

•Did you appeal within the 15-day window? What documentation did you end up providing? I'm helping my neighbor prepare his appeal and want to make sure we include everything necessary.

I work with unemployment cases, and this happens more than you'd think. PA UC is currently doing a systematic review of pandemic-era claims (2020-2021), which is why several of you are receiving these notices simultaneously. Important facts about PA UC overpayment notices: 1. The 15-day appeal deadline is strict and based on the MAILING date, not when you received it 2. Filing an appeal immediately stops any collection activity until resolved 3. You can appeal online through your PA UC dashboard or by mail (certified is best) 4. If successful, you'll receive a Notice of Revised Determination For your appeal, provide documentation that proves you were employed during the disputed weeks. The most compelling evidence is: - Pay stubs covering the period in question - Letter from employer confirming employment dates - Bank statements showing regular employment deposits - W-2 from 2021 showing employment If your appeal is denied, you can request a hearing, but it's much easier to win at the initial appeal stage.

•Thank you SO MUCH for this detailed information! I just submitted my appeal online with all the documentation you mentioned. The UC rep I spoke with said these batch reviews are happening because they're closing out all pandemic-era claims before some deadline. She actually seemed pretty confident my appeal would be approved based on my documentation. I'll update everyone once I hear something!

•This is an important warning. PA UC overpayment notices should never be ignored, even if you believe they're in error. If you miss the appeal deadline, Pennsylvania can and will: • Garnish your wages (up to 25%) • Intercept your state tax refunds • Place liens against your property • Add significant interest and penalties to the original amount • Report the debt to credit bureaus In some cases, they can even pursue criminal charges for unemployment fraud if they believe the overpayment was intentional, though this is rare for system errors like these 2021 notices appear to be.

Just wanted to update everyone. I had my appeal hearing yesterday for my similar overpayment notice. The examiner immediately saw the error when I showed my employment records. She said their system flagged a bunch of 2021 claims incorrectly during a recent audit. My case was dismissed on the spot! For anyone else dealing with this, definitely appeal and bring documentation of your employment during those weeks they claim you were paid.

•That's such a relief to hear! I have my appeal phone interview scheduled for next Tuesday. I've gathered all my documentation showing I started work in August 2021 and never claimed benefits after that. This gives me hope it'll be resolved quickly. Thanks for updating us!
