Called PA UC 162 times with no answer - when is the best time to actually get through?

I'm absolutely losing my mind trying to get ahold of someone at PA unemployment. I literally called 162 times back-to-back today (yes, I counted) and either got a busy signal or the automated message saying they're experiencing high call volume. My claim has been stuck in limbo for 3 weeks now with no payment, and I have bills due next week that I can't pay. Does anyone know what time of day actually works to get through? Early morning? Right before closing? I'm desperate at this point and need to speak to a real person before I lose my apartment.

The "best" time is a myth honestly. I had success calling at exactly 7:55am, right before they open at 8. You have to be ready to dial the second it turns 7:55. Have your claim info and SSN ready to go because if you waste time looking for it, someone else takes your spot. Also, Tuesdays and Wednesdays seem slightly better than Mondays or Fridays in my experience.

Thanks for the tip! So basically be ready to power-dial right before 8am. I'll try that tomorrow morning. Did you have to wait on hold for a long time once you got through?

Interesting theory about the breaks! I'll give that a shot too if the morning attempt doesn't work. At this point I'm willing to try anything.

After struggling for WEEKS trying to reach someone (with over 200 calls!!), I finally tried Claimyr.com and got through to a PA UC rep in under 20 minutes. They basically call for you and connect you when they get through. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2 I was skeptical but desperate about my open issue, and it actually worked. Just sharing because I know how maddening it is to keep calling and never get through.

sounds like a scam to me. why wuld u pay someone to call for u when u can just keep trying???

I watched that video and it looks legit. At this point I'm desperate enough to try anything. My rent is due in 5 days and I'm out of options. If I can get this claim issue fixed, I'll be able to pay my bills. I'll try the early morning call trick first, but if that fails, I might give this a shot. Thanks for sharing!

While timing your calls can help, the PA UC phone systems are genuinely overwhelmed. Here are some alternatives to consider: 1. Use the PA UC message center in your dashboard to send a detailed question about your claim status 2. Visit your local PA CareerLink office in person - they can sometimes help with basic claim issues or use their direct lines to UC 3. Contact your state representative's office - they have special channels to UC and can often get responses 4. Check if you have an "open issue" on your claim in the portal that you can resolve online The phone system is frustrating by design - they're understaffed and the queue fills within minutes of opening. If your issue is time-sensitive due to financial hardship, the legislative option might be your best bet.

Thanks for these alternatives! I did check the portal and there is an "open issue" but it doesn't explain what the issue actually is, just says "eligibility review" with no details. I'll try the message center tonight and also look up my state rep. There's a CareerLink about 30 minutes from me - do I need an appointment or can I just walk in?

Most CareerLinks accept walk-ins, but calling ahead to check their specific protocols can save you time. For the "eligibility review" open issue, that typically means they need to verify something about your employment separation. The message center is good, but don't include your full SSN - just the last 4 digits along with your full name and claim confirmation number.

I HAAAATE THEIR PHONE SYSTEM!!! Been dealing with this garbage since January!! Called 200+ times some days and NOTHING!! When I finally got through after THREE WEEKS, the lady told me "oh we just needed to verify your last employer's name" - SERIOUSLY??? That's what caused me to almost miss mortgage payments?? The whole system is designed to make people give up I swear.

This is why I recommend people document everything! Request a supervisor if they give you basic answers like this. Half the time it feels like they're just rushing to clear calls rather than solve problems. Always ask for an exact timeline of when your issue will be resolved.

Reading this makes me so angry! It's ridiculous that something so simple could hold up benefits for weeks. I'm worried my issue is something equally trivial. Did you try any particular time of day when you finally got through?

Monday morning was when I got through, but I had to call for about 2 hours straight. What worked for me was pressing the option for "new claims" instead of "existing claims" because that queue seemed shorter. Once I got the actual person, I just explained I had an existing claim but selected wrong and they transferred me. Just a little trick that might work for you.

I should caution that while this might work occasionally, UC reps are instructed to only transfer appropriate calls. If too many people use this workaround, it could result in them changing the system to prevent it. Just be aware it's not guaranteed to work every time.

That's a clever trick! I'll try that if my other attempts fail. At this point I'm willing to try anything to get this resolved. Thank you!

did u try emailing them??? sometimes they respond

I didn't realize they had an email option. Do you have the address they actually respond to? I'm going to try all these methods in parallel and hope something works!

PA UC doesn't have a public email for claims. They use the Message Center in your dashboard instead. This creates a ticket in their system that gets assigned to a claims examiner. For security reasons, they moved away from regular email years ago.

UPDATE: Success! I tried the early morning trick and called exactly at 7:58am. Got through after only 12 attempts and waited on hold for about 35 minutes. The rep was actually really helpful and fixed my issue - turns out they needed additional employment verification because my employer had reported different quarterly wages than what I put on my application. Issue resolved and payments should start processing tomorrow! Thanks everyone for the advice. For anyone else struggling, the early morning really does seem to be the key. Have your info ready and be prepared to wait on hold, but it's worth it to get your issue resolved.

CONGRATS!!! It's like winning the lottery when you actually get through to someone helpful! Make sure you check your dashboard tomorrow to confirm the payments are actually processing.

Wow, congratulations on finally getting through! Your success story gives me hope. I'm dealing with a similar situation - been trying to reach PA UC for weeks about a payment issue. The early morning strategy sounds like it's worth trying. Quick question though - when you called at 7:58am, did you keep redialing immediately if you got a busy signal, or did you wait between attempts? Also, did you use the main UC number or a specific department line? Thanks for sharing your experience and coming back to update us!

Hey Eduardo! When I called at 7:58am, I kept redialing immediately if I got busy signals - no waiting between attempts because those spots fill up FAST. I used the main UC customer service number (1-888-313-7284) and just kept hitting redial on my phone. The key is being ready to dial the exact second it hits 7:58 because by 8:05am the queue is usually full for the day. Have your claim confirmation number and SSN ready before you even start dialing. Good luck - you got this!
