Accidentally answered NO to work search on PA UC weekly claim - now have $0 payment and open issue!
I'm freaking out right now! I just filed my weekly unemployment claim and wasn't paying attention when the work search question came up. I accidentally hit NO when I actually did complete my work search activities (applied to 2 jobs and did a resume update). Now my claim is showing an open issue and $0 for my payment this week. I'm supposed to get $580 and I REALLY need that money for rent due on Friday. Has anyone had this happen before? Will they fix it when I call tomorrow or am I going to have to wait weeks for this to get resolved? I've only been on unemployment for a month and I'm worried they'll think I'm trying to commit fraud or something. Help!

This happens more often than you'd think! I did the exact same thing last year. Call the UC service center first thing tomorrow morning and explain it was an honest mistake. They can usually fix it right on the phone if you get through to a claims examiner. Make sure you have your work search records ready to verify what you actually did. They'll likely just need to remove the issue flag and reprocess your payment.

•Thank you so much! Did you have to wait long for payment after they fixed it? I'm really worried about making rent.

GOOD LUCK GETTING THROUGH TO ANYONE!! I made this exact mistake in January and it took me 2 WEEKS of calling NONSTOP every single day before I could even talk to an actual person. By the time they fixed it, I had already filed another weekly claim. The system is completely broken!

•Oh no, that's exactly what I was afraid of! I can't wait 2 weeks for this payment. Did you try calling right when they opened?

I've helped several people with this issue. Here's what you need to do: 1. Call 888-313-7284 exactly at 8:00am when they open 2. Have your documentation ready (screenshots of job applications, dates, company names) 3. When asked for the reason for your call, say "Weekly certification correction" 4. Explain it was an honest mistake and you DID complete your work search requirements If you can't get through by phone, you can also use the PA UC message center through your dashboard, but phone is much faster for this type of issue. They can usually process the correction within 24-48 hours once you reach someone.

•This is really helpful, thank you! I'll set my alarm for 7:55am and start calling right at 8. Fingers crossed I can get this fixed quickly.

•Glad to hear they fixed it quickly once you got through! 4 days of calling sounds rough though...

This happened to me last month but I said NO to the question about being able and available for work because I was confused about what they were asking. Same result - open issue and $0 payment. I tried calling for days but couldn't get through. I ended up going to the CareerLink office in person and they were able to help me contact someone who fixed it. Maybe try that if you can't get through on the phone?

•That's a good idea! I didn't even think about going to CareerLink. I'll try calling first but if that doesn't work maybe I'll try heading there. Is it easy to get an appointment with them?

After trying to call PA UC for 3 days straight for a similar issue (mine was answering a question wrong about part-time work), I finally used Claimyr and got through to a rep in about 20 minutes. Cost me like $20 but saved me days of frustration and getting nowhere. They have a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2 and their site is claimyr.com. The UC rep was able to fix my mistake right away and I got my payment 2 days later. Worth every penny considering I was freaking out about bills.

•I've never heard of Claimyr before. Does it really work? I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point.

Yeah it worked for me! They basically call on your behalf and then connect you when they get through to someone. Saved me from having to redial for hours.

•I used them too when my claim was stuck for 3 weeks. Got through in like 30 mins when I had been trying for DAYS on my own. System is rigged so you cant get through unless you pay a third party. So frustrating!!

Just wanted to add - when you do get through to someone, make sure they understand you actually DID complete your work search requirements. Have the details ready (employer names, dates of application, etc). The agent should be able to override the system and process your payment. This is a common issue they deal with, so don't stress too much about them thinking it's fraud. Just explain it was a simple mistake clicking the wrong button.

•Thank you! I've got all my work search info saved on my phone. I applied to a supervisor position at Target and a warehouse job at Amazon, plus I updated my resume on Indeed. Hopefully that's enough documentation.

Update: I managed to get through to PA UC this morning! Called right at 8am and only waited about 45 minutes. The claims examiner was really understanding and said this happens all the time. She removed the open issue and said my payment should process within 2-3 business days. Such a relief! Thanks everyone for the advice and support.

•That's great news! Glad you got it resolved quickly. For future reference, always double-check your answers before submitting. Those weekly certification questions can trip anyone up, especially when you're doing them week after week.

I'm glad to see there's an update that someone got through and had their issue resolved! For anyone else dealing with this, I'd recommend keeping a detailed log of your work search activities going forward. I use a simple spreadsheet with columns for date, company name, position applied for, and method (online application, in-person, etc.). This way if you ever accidentally click the wrong button again, you'll have everything organized and ready to show the claims examiner. It's saved me so much stress knowing I have all my documentation in one place. Good luck to everyone dealing with similar issues!

•That's such a smart idea about keeping a spreadsheet! I wish I had thought of that before this happened to me. I've been keeping my work search stuff in random notes on my phone but having it all organized like that would be way better. Do you include things like networking events or job fairs in your log too, or just actual job applications?

•@Connor Gallagher Yes, I include everything! Job fairs, networking events, career workshops, even informational interviews. Pennsylvania accepts all of those as valid work search activities, so I document them all. I also add a notes column where I write down any follow-up actions or contacts I made. It s'been a lifesaver during audits too - they randomly check work search compliance and having everything organized makes it so much easier to prove you re'meeting the requirements.

This exact thing happened to my friend last month! She was so panicked but it really is a common mistake. One tip I'd add - when you call, try to stay calm and be polite with the rep even if you've been waiting forever to get through. They deal with frustrated people all day and being nice can sometimes help speed things along. Also, if the first person you talk to can't help or seems unsure, politely ask to speak with a claims examiner or supervisor. Sometimes the front-line staff aren't able to make these corrections but the examiner can do it immediately. Hope you get this sorted out fast - rent stress is the worst!

•This is such good advice! I've been stressed about calling tomorrow but you're right - being polite and patient will probably help. I'm going to write down what I want to say beforehand so I don't stumble over my words when I finally get through. The rent deadline is making this so much worse but hopefully they can fix it quickly like they did for your friend. Thanks for the tip about asking for a claims examiner if needed!
