Will my NY unemployment benefits disappear if claims still pending in September 2025?

I'm getting really stressed because I've got 3 weekly certifications in 'pending' status right now, and September is coming up fast. I heard that NY unemployment benefits have some kind of end date in September 2025? My question is - if my pending claims aren't processed by then, will I just lose that money completely? Has anyone dealt with this before? The pending claims are from July when there was that system glitch that made me have to call in (which was impossible). I've been certifying every week since but those specific weeks are still stuck in limbo. Really need this money for rent next month!

How are you managing without the payments? I'm seriously worried about making rent if these don't clear soon.

The September 2025 date you're referring to is probably the end of your benefit year, not a universal cutoff date. Everyone's benefit year is different - it starts when you first apply and typically lasts 12 months. If your claims are pending before your benefit year ends, they won't just disappear. NYSDOL will still process them even after your benefit year ends. What you should be concerned about is making sure you've properly certified for those weeks within the certification timeframe (usually within 7 days of the week ending). Call the DOL and specifically ask about your pending certifications. The regular UI number often can't help with pending claims - you need to reach a claims specialist.

Thank you! That's a relief. I did certify properly for all those weeks, so hopefully they'll still process them. But I've been trying to call for weeks and can never get through... it's so frustrating.

benefits dont disappear overnight!!! they process them eventually, just might take forever. I had 6 weeks pending last year and they all came thru at once in october, even tho my benefit year ended in september. but u DO need to keep bugging them!!

That gives me hope! Did you do anything specific to get them to finally process your claims? Or did they just randomly come through?

I had a similar issue and was pulling my hair out trying to reach someone at NYSDOL. Regular phone lines were useless - always busy or disconnected. I finally got through using Claimyr.com - it basically keeps dialing for you and gets you in the call queue. They have a demo video here: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE Totally worth it to avoid the endless redial nightmare. Once I actually spoke to someone, they cleared my pending weeks in about 10 minutes. The rep explained the system glitch affected thousands of claims in July.

Thanks for the tip! I'm going to check this out. I've literally been trying to call every day for weeks and I'm desperate at this point.

OK I NEED TO CORRECT SOME MISINFORMATION HERE. September 2025 is NOT just a random benefit year end for everyone. The NYS Extended Benefits program IS ending for everyone on September 15, 2025. This was because of the state unemployment rate dropping below the threshold. There was a press release about this last month. HOWEVER!!! This ONLY affects people currently collecting Extended Benefits (the 13-week extension after regular UI runs out). If you're on regular UI benefits, you will still get all your weeks as long as you properly certified for them, even if they're pending now. If you're on EB and have pending weeks from before Sept 15, those should still be processed and paid out eventually, but you won't get any NEW weeks after the cutoff date.

Thank you for clarifying! I'm on regular UI, not extended benefits, so sounds like I should be okay? Just need to somehow get through to someone to clear these pending weeks.

Yes, you'll be fine. Regular UI isn't affected by that September cutoff. Your benefit year is still 12 months from when you first applied.

I'll try the 8am trick tomorrow. Were there specific words you used to explain the problem that helped them understand?

Let me explain a bit more clearly what's happening with pending claims: 1. Claims that are already certified but showing as "pending" will NOT disappear after any benefit year end date. They remain in the system and will be processed. 2. The September 2025 date others mentioned is specifically for the Extended Benefits program, which is ending because NY's unemployment rate dropped below 6.5%. 3. For claims affected by the July system glitch, NYSDOL is still working through the backlog. Many people experienced this issue. 4. The most effective solution is to speak directly with a claims specialist, not a general representative. When you call, specifically say "I need to speak with a claims specialist about pending certifications from July's system outage." 5. Document every call attempt with date/time. If you end up needing to file an appeal for delayed payment, this documentation will help. Hope this helps clarify the situation!

Thank you so much for this detailed explanation! This makes me feel much better. I'll definitely ask for a claims specialist specifically and start documenting my call attempts.

btw has anyone else noticed the website is always "down for maintenance" exactly when you need to certify? like they do it on purpose to make it harder

omg yes!!!! always sunday nites when everyone trying 2 certify. so annoying!!!

The maintenance windows are actually scheduled and posted on their website in advance. It's usually 12am-7am on Sundays. They do this because it's the lowest traffic period. If you try to certify during normal business hours, you shouldn't encounter maintenance issues.

UPDATE: I finally got through to NYSDOL this morning! I followed multiple pieces of advice from this thread: 1. Called right at 8am 2. Asked specifically for a claims specialist 3. Mentioned the July system glitch affecting my pending certifications The specialist confirmed that my pending weeks will NOT disappear in September (which was my main worry). She said the July glitch affected a lot of people and they're still working through the backlog. She was able to release two of my three pending payments, and said the third one needs additional review but should be processed within 7-10 business days. So relieved! Thank you everyone for your help and suggestions!

Great news! Glad you got it sorted out. This is exactly why speaking directly with a claims specialist is so important - they have the authority to release pending payments on the spot in many cases.
