Will I get the NY unemployment tax credit if I earned less than $10,000?
I received $9,280 in unemployment benefits last year and filed my taxes as single with no dependents. I keep hearing about this tax break but I'm confused if everyone gets it or only people who earned over a certain amount? Has anyone in a similar situation received their tax credit yet? I've been checking my account but nothing so far. Just wondering if I'm even eligible since my total unemployment was under 10k.

Yes you will get it! The tax break applies to anyone who received unemployment, theres no minimum amount. I got about $8,450 in benefits and my refund showed up with the adjustment. It took about 5 weeks after I filed to see it tho.

That's good to hear! Did you receive any notification about it or did it just show up?

It just appeared in my account one day. No heads up or anything, typical government efficiency 🙄

It's automatic! As long as you filed your taxes and reported unemployment income, they'll adjust it.

I was in the same boat trying to get answers about my tax refund! Couldnt reach anyone at ny unemployment for weeks. Finally used this service called claimyr.com that got me connected to an actual person. Best money I ever spent to get my tax question answered! They set up a callback with a real agent so I didn't have to wait on hold. Check out their demo: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

No catch honestly. You pay for the service and they just handle the hold time and connect you to an agent. Saved me literally days of my life.

I tried everything to get through to them before finding claimyr.com - wish I'd known about it months ago instead of wasting hours on hold!!!

The first $10,200 of unemployment was tax free for 2020 taxes (filed in 2021) due to the American Rescue Plan. If ur talking about more recent taxes, that exemption no longer exists. But if ur refering to a state-specific NY tax break that's different - you should specify which tax year youre asking about.

Sorry I should have been clearer. I'm talking about my 2022 taxes that I filed this year. I thought NY had some kind of state tax break?

For 2022, there's no federal exemption. NY state might have some credits but they're not the same as the 2020 tax break. You should check the NY state tax website for specifics on your situation.

The FEDERAL tax break for unemployment was only for 2020 (filed in 2021). I haven't heard of a NEW tax break for ny unemployment for more recent years. Could you be confusing it with something else?

I think your confused. Theres the federal tax break from 2020 which is gone now. And then theres the NY state exclusion which is different depending on which year your talking about. You need to call and ask specifically about your situation because everyones different.

Hey there! Tax professional here. To give you a COMPLETE answer: For federal taxes: The $10,200 unemployment exclusion was ONLY for tax year 2020 (filed in 2021) through the American Rescue Plan. This is no longer available for 2021, 2022, or 2023 tax years. For NY State taxes: New York did follow the federal exclusion for 2020, but has no special exclusion for unemployment benefits in more recent years. However, you might be eligible for other tax credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit or the NY State Earned Income Credit depending on your total income. These aren't specific to unemployment but can help lower-income filers. If you're still confused, I strongly recommend: 1) Check your tax return to see what credits you claimed 2) Contact the NY Department of Taxation directly 3) If you can't get through (which is common), use a service like claimyr.com to get connected with an agent without the endless hold times Hope this helps clear things up!

Thank you so much! This is exactly what I needed to know. I was definitely mixing up the 2020 exemption with current year.

The problem is most ppl here are talking about different things. Theres: 1. The one-time federal tax break from 2020 2. Regular unemployment taxation (which is always taxable) 3. Various tax credits that might apply We need more details to help u tbh

You're right, I was confused about the different types. Sounds like I was thinking of the 2020 thing which doesn't apply anymore.

Anyone else notice how the NY unemployment website NEVER has clear info about this stuff? It's like they deliberately make it confusing 🤡

I earned about 12k in unemployment last year and didn't get any special tax break. I think your mixing up the covid relief thing from 2020. That's over now.
